Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. BooksAuthorsSubscribeAbout UsContact UsPRINCESS BARIHwang Sok-yongTranslated from the Korean by Sora Kim-Russell`Hwang Sok-yong is undoubtedly the most powerful voice of the novel in Asia todayKenzaburo Oe, winner of the Nobel Prize for LiteratureIn the North Korean city of Chongjin, a seventh d…aughter is born in 1983 to a couple longing for a son. Abandoned hours after her birth, she is dragged away by the family dog and eventually rescued by her grandmother. The old woman names the child Bari, after a Korean legend telling of a similarly forsaken princess who undertakes a quest for an elixir that will bring peace to the souls of the dead. Bari, who has inherited her grandmothers extraordinary intuitive powers and the ability to see apparitions, escapes famine and desolation in North Korea as a delicate but brave adolescent. She finds refuge in China before embarking on the sort of journey made by thousands in our time: across the ocean in the hold of a cargo ship, bound for London and, it is hoped, for a better life. In a drab North Korean city, a seventh daughter is born to a couple longing for a son. Abandoned hours after her birth, she is eventually rescued by her grandmother. The old woman names the child Bari, after a legend telling of a forsaken princess who undertakes a quest for an elixir that will bring peace to the souls of the dead. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Access EAP: Frameworks Access EAP: Frameworks is nominated for the Excellence in Course Innovation award at the 2014 ELTons. Written by the authors of the highly successful EAP Essentials, the second part of this two-level course teaches academic language and competence to Upper Intermediate to Advan…ced learners. Access EAP: Frameworks is designed for students who are about to enter higher education studies in an English-speaking institution. The course is based on real student life and prepares students for the tasks they will face when studying in an English-medium higher education institution. The reader follows students at university as they have discussions, listen to lectures, read texts, work on assignments and make choices about how to study. The book builds language and competence across key academic themes such as academic integrity, argument and research, applying the concept of Graduate Attributes - skills, personal qualities and understanding that are developed through the higher education experience - to frame activities and tasks. The book has ten units, each framed around a key academic theme. Within each unit, the first section introduces the theme and subsequent sections develop the associated concepts, language and competence further or in a different context. The units are free standing, but within them the language skills and study competence are integrated, reflecting the reality of academic study. Key academic words are listed by the texts in which they are presented, and regular tasks help understanding, support learning and practise using these key words. Students will learn the important language and grammar patterns needed for understanding and producing academic texts. They will also discover essential aspects of academic study, including the ability to read critically and integrate ideas from sources into essays or reports. See accompanying Teacher's Book. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. A Land without Jasmine is a sexy, satirical detective story about the sudden disappearance of a young female student from Yemen's Sanaa University. Each chapter is narrated by a different character beginning with Jasmine herself. The mystery surrounding her disappearance comes into clearer focus… with each self-serving and idiosyncratic account provided by an acquaintance, family member, or detective. As the details surrounding her sudden disappearance emerge the mystery deepens. Sexual depravity, honour, obsession; the motives are numerous and the suspects plentiful. It seems that everyone wants a piece of the charming young student. Family, friends, fellow students and nosey neighbours are quick to make their own judgements on the case, but the truth may be far stranger than anyone anticipates. This short novel has echoes of both the Sherlock Holmes stories and The Catcher in the Rye, as in addition to the mystery and a murder, the novel contains candid discussions of coming of age in a land of sexual repression. Wajdi al-Ahdal is a satirical author with a fresh and provocative voice and an excellent eye for telling the details of his world. A Land without Jasmine is a sexy, satirical detective story about the sudden disappearance of a young female student from Yemen's Sanaa University. Each chapter is narrated by a different character beginning with Jasmine herself. The mystery surrounding her disappearance comes into clearer focus with each self-serving and idiosyncratic account. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Two young people from foreign lands meet in a shop in Cambridge: Brani Tawo, a Kurdish political refugee from Turkey, and Feruzeh, who had fled to the UK from revolutionary Iran. Slowly, their love begins to grow, fed by stories, a shared love of literature and a subtle recognition of their mutu…al displacement. Brani Tawo narrates vignettes from his family history, vivid tales that evoke old legends: shepherds struck by lightning, soldiers returning home with war trauma, blood feuds that destroy families, bears mauling villagers in search of stolen cubs and a photographer who carries news to the villages in the form of the portraits he takes. These dark, inherited memories, combined with his own melancholy nature and chronic insomnia, weigh on Brani Tawo, who often seeks contemplative solace in graveyards. Over time, however, drawn by Feruzeh's quiet radiance, he begins to reach a freer place within himself.Feruzeh also harbours grim family secrets, and when she suddenly returns to Iran to attend to an emergency, Brani Tawo knows what he must do - Sins and Innocents is a warm, intimate love story redolent with the (often harsh) music of Central Anatolian village society as well as the Cambridge sophistication of Wittgenstein, Brooke, Grantchester Meadows, colleges, churches and cafes. Two young people from foreign lands meet in a shop in Cambridge: Brani Tawo, a Kurdish political refugee from Turkey, and Feruzeh, who had fled to the UK from revolutionary Iran. Slowly, their love begins to grow, fed by stories, a shared love of literature and a subtle recognition of their mutual displacement. Binding is straight and tight. Pages are all clean, white, and crisp. Book has 19 pages of text, followed by 40 or so pages of art reproductions - this volume looks to be a high quality reprint of Prangey's original Souvenirs de Granada et de Alhambra published in Paris in 1837. Dust Jacket - has a faint wrinkle at the head and tail of the spine and just a trace of rubbing at the head. There's a trace of rubbing at the very tips of the two upper outside corners.
