Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Word Paintings is the direct result of a collaboration between a friend and me. We got bored one night, and invented our unusual word game. The object was to give each other a single word, and to write a story around it. Many of mine became romance stories, and many of hers had a distinct science fiction flavor. We both added poetry, and I added essays as well. The game gave us both the incentive to keep writing, separate from the paintings. While we initially did not want to share the stories with our families or the public, we realized that was more foolish than not. It's very hard to get published, so why not share them? I even put some of my stories on fan fiction sites, and got some very favorable reviews Some readers were very amused, and others asked me to continue the storylines, which I did. Quite a few of my other writings are included in this volume, and I hope you have as much fun reading them as I had writing them.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. This book will appeal to children because it is a light, yet realistic story which deals with emotions and situations that children can identify with, such as: rejection from friends, frustrations in attempting a solution to a problem and acceptance, finally, with friends. The story is about a turtle, Tyrone, who cannot play with his turtle friends at Hide & Seek because he cannot fit his head inside his shell. Laughed at by the other turtles, he asks his other animal friends for suggestions. After several unsuccessful attempts, he gives up. Later he hears a parrot, perched high in a tree, calling him. He climbs up on a tree stump to see who it is but falls off. He hits the ground and realizes that his glasses have come off and his head now fits inside the shell. Tyrone is finally happy because he can play with the other turtles.…

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. This timely new book will inspire children and give them a real understanding of the feelings that come from giving. When six-year-old Amanda wanted to help her teacher who had a problem, she wondered what could she do? She thought of great ideas like making holiday decorations, baking cookies, and entering a contest. Through Amanda's efforts to help her teacher, she discovered that helping someone else gave her the best feeling she ever, ever had. It was better than eating a chocolate sundae, better than opening up all the presents at her birthday party, and even better than the day she got her new wet-nosed puppy The uniqueness of this incredibly inspiring book lies in the fact that The Biggest and Brightest Light it is a true story written by Amanda's mother and beautifully illustrated by Amanda when she was only 16 years old. This tender story, written primarily for children ages 4 to 8, will tug at the heartstrings of readers of all ages and leave them looking for opportunities to follow Amanda's example. Perlyn, Amanda (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Today's children, especially teenagers, live in a world that is much different than the one that existed just twenty years ago. A drastically changed family dynamic and the advent of social media have forced young people to grow up in a more fragile environment, one without the stability they need and with the constant pressure of scrutiny from peers and others they don't even know. The effects of these factors have led to suicide becoming the second leading cause of death in teenagers in America Circumstance has deprived these kids of the stability and perspective that they so desperately need. This is a crossroads moment. Coach the Soul is the first book that addresses these issues with real answers. It was born in Ken LaVigne's classroom and on the football field during over thirty years as a high school teacher and coach. Its epiphany is just as unexpected as the dire circumstances in the lives of so many students. Coach the Soul sheds light on what today's young people really need.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. "A work of genius"--The Boston Globe "From the first sentence of the novel the reader is aware that he is in the presence of a magician.[Collier] casts a spell and he does so always with a smile."--Paul Theroux "A wayward masterpiece.Whatever this volume has cost you, it is, believe me, a great bargain."--Anthony Burgess "It is impossible to convey the subtle wit which makes you laugh out loud, the beauty and penetrating satire which blend so perfectly into its brilliance."--Booklist "The whole is written with sly humor throughout and is illuminated by splendid similes and metaphors which mark the author as a true humorist."--New York Times In the author's own words: "This is a strange book.an emotional melodrama, complete with a Medusa villainess, an honest simpleton of a hero, and an angelic if only anthropoid heroine, all functioning in the two dimensional world of the old Lyceum poster or the primitive fresco.where an angel may outsize a church, and where a man may marry a monkey on a foggy day."--from John Collier's "A Looking Glass" When Alfred Fatigay returns to his native London, he brings along his trustworthy pet chimpanzee Emily who, unbeknownst to Fatigay, has become civilized: literate, literary--and in love with Fatigay himself. After Emily meets Alfred's fiancée Amy Flint, a 1920's "modern woman," she sets out to save her beloved from Amy's cold grip. "Emily is the perfect outside observer," writes Eva Brann in her introduction, "because she is an African in Europe, a female in a man's world, a servant to liberated sophisticates, and above all an old-fashioned creature in a modern world." John Collier (1901-1980) was born in Britain, but spent much of his life in the U.S., where he wrote screenplays for Hollywood (The African Queen, Sylvia Scarlet, and I Am a Camera among them) and short stories for the New Yorker and other magazines. He was also a poet, editor, and reviewer. …
