Light blue-green boards with red lettering and silver and red decorations to the cover and spine. There is a small tear at bottom spine area with some associated light damage. Interior text and illustration pages are flawless. This is a reprint of the 1913 edition published by American Museum of Natural History, New York which was issued as no. 2 of the Museum's Handbook series, with new preface and introduction. The four color art work on the endpapers, front and back, and several of the interior black and white sketches which were in the first edition, are from the Rio Grande Press art book. This edition has been enlarged from the original 6 X 9 book. When the author Goddard wrote Indians of the Southwest in 1912, he had been at the American Museum of Natural History in New York for three years and the Southwest Indian Hall had been placed in his charge. Goddard's influence on studies for Indians of the Southwest went beyond his museum displays and the present book, and his publications on Athapascan Indians. Goddard's interest went beyond abstract scientific problems but to the man and woman who had to be understood as moulded by the culture in which he lived.

Ajouter au panierHard Back. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. Reichard, Lilian J. - Photography (illustrateur). First Printing Stated. 161 Pages. Cream boards with blue and red lettering and decorationss. This is a quality reprint of the 1939 release by J.J. Augustin Publisher, New York. Illustrated with 19 black and white photograhs. This book gives a short accont of Navajo behavior and attitudes toward their complex social and religious organization, a picture of daily life and adaptation to notions which have introduced by the United States government. The author's primary purpose was to answer questions asked by laymen, teachers, writers, artists and tourists. The traveler who has wandered off the highway realizes that the desert supports a people attractive and colorful. Yet these brief contacts may leave the impression that they are so reserved as to be stolid, so patient as to be shiftless, so mobile as to be irresponsible, so acquisitive as to be beggarly. The author says these Indians when under circumstances which they understand, are talkative and jolly and that toward memebers of their own tribe to whom obligations are well-defined, they are faithful, tolerant, dependable and generous. Navajos have many difficulties arising from their environment and to those troubles have been added the lengthy attempt to adjust to the ways of an alien civilization. The introduction of white culture has not been gentle or uniform and many Navajos do not understand this while at the same time many of them desire to embrace it. Contents in 13 Chapters: Matron, Dezba at Home, Grandchildren, Her Mother's Daughters, Conservative Son, Desba's Other Child, Play, Singing, Authority, Return to Earth, Groping, Heir, and Visiting.

Ajouter au panierHard Back. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket As Published. First Rio Grande Press Printing. 178 Pages. This book is a very high quality reproduction printing of the of the J.B. Lippincott Company 1929 release. The photo offset printing negatives were taken from the first edition with the cooperation of the New Mexico State Library in Santa Fe. In the first edition the art plates were printed in color and hand-tipped into position but even in 1971 that process could not economically be repeated. However four of the color plates were reproduced and printed on the endpapers. These same plates are repeated in black and white in their proper sequence within the book. Author painter Frank Applegate was born in Illinois, attended the University and had considerable training in the Philadelphia Academy of fine Arts as well as the Julian Academy of Art in Paris. He came to New Mexico in the 1920s when many other gifted artists and writers were moving to Taos and Santa Fe. The author, by long experience and tremendous empathy, wrote from the Indian viewpoint, a rare achievement for a non-Indian. This is a beautiful original condition copy of a Rio Grand Classic. Contents in 17 Chapters: Ancestral Eagles, The Snke Priest's Trousers, The Artists and the Snakes, San Juan de los Caballeros, Hopi Quarrel, a Hopi Affair, Ago Po, The Little Fish of San Juan, The Holy Water, Turtle Shells, Cochiti Ancient Hunding Dance, the Hopi Famine, The Turk of Pecos, Estevan the Magnificent, Parrot Feathers, Montezuma, and the Twelve Virgins of Pecos. Plus Preface and a Foreword by Witteer Bynner. List of Seven Illustrations: Indian Game Animals - Frontispiece, Green Corn Dance, The Skunks, Spring Planting Dancers, The Dog Dance, Cochiti Ancient Hunting Dance, and The Mountain Lion Pursuing a Deer. Please Note - This book is identical in every way to the 1977 McRae Publications release except for the title and copyright pages and the boards. The boards on this edition are white with red lettering and decorations.

Ajouter au panierHard Back. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. 1968 Reprint. 119 Pages. A Rio Grande Classic first published in 1893. The endpapers at the front and back is a replica of an old railroad map circa 1890. This is a basic source book of American history and is one aspect of American history that proved truth is stranger than fiction. Historically flagellation began in Egypt and is a penance condensed. Yet as all flagellation to-day is voluntary, and as Christ never struck himself a blow nor ever laid any penance upon himself it is the opposite to any true imitation of Jesus. It is a strange practice indeed. One participant was observed striking himself a blow for the cow he stole and another for the cow he intends to steal.
