Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The book, I believe, helps us to understand and appreciate our city's past. The first and perhaps most important of the 24 stories is of the wood and lumber industry located along the Fox River, Lake Winnebago and nearby waterways. This industry would become the primary force for the growth and development of our city. Also featured is our German heritage, Prohibition, racial segregation, the economic depression of the 1930s, World War II and a variety of other events and movements that have impacted our community. Each of these stories are told through the memories of those who lived it. The reason I've been writing about the history and people of Oshkosh is to contribute a fuller understanding of local history. Most of my writings are based on interviews although I also explore books and articles that help me understand both the event and the developing story. And the experience and knowledge I've gathered while living in Oshkosh helps as well.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Following a short presentation about a book I had recently written, stories that occurred in the early part of the 20th century, many in the audience asked what life was like living in Oshkosh during this time. I managed to answer a few, but only partially, and was disappointed I was unable to provide a clearer picture of our city's past.I knew I needed to find out more about our earlier years so I, once again, explored books and articles to help me understand more of our past. I eventually came across a story about the Underground Railroad and after reading part of the story I wondered if runaway slaves seeking freedom sought refuge in Oshkosh. My research, for the most part, went unfulfilled as few records were kept due to the passage of a federal law making it illegal to assist the enslaved. But knowing that other national events played a role in shaping our city, I continued exploring our early history during the pre-Civil War years and beyond and found stories I thought would help provide a fuller understanding of Oshkosh and its history. …

About ten years ago Dog Ear Publishing out of Indianapolis, Indiana declared bankruptcy and soon thereafter closed their doors. As a result I could no longer order any of these books that were popular, not only in terms of sales, but also from the comments I received from others. The retelling of some of these stories allows me to inform local residents of stories that many had not previously read. And others who purchase the books could once again read some of their favorite stories. It is my hope that the stories offers an opportunity to reflect and wonder whether the events of the past, helps us to understand the city we live in today.…
