This is the 1974 edition, first published in 1974. The book has no bumping or foxing. The front hardcover is made of dark blue linen cloth, with the title and author in gold at the top. The page edges are clean and unmarked. The spine remains tight. ## IMAGES: We provide at least two images for each book, along with a map, to give you a clear idea of what you are purchasing. ## Read on for interesting information. ## Buying more than one title?or ordering internationally? Drop me a message for a personalised quote and discounted rates, where possible, via the Contact Seller option.## ## The Crimean War wasn't just a clash of empires?it was the funeral march of outdated military thinking. It revealed the decay beneath aristocratic command, the brutal cost of miscommunication, and the emergence of modern journalism, nursing, and diplomacy. Amid the fog of cannon fire and broken charges, it whispered a truth Britain hadn't faced before: that glory, once unquestioned, could be reckless, and war no longer fit comfortably in its old heroic guise.## ## Charge! Hurrah! Hurrah!: A Life of Cardigan of Balaclava by Donald Thomas is an engaging biography of James Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan?a man whose legacy remains closely tied to the Crimean War and its most notorious military mistake: the Charge of the Light Brigade. Published in 1974, this book uncovers the myths surrounding one of Victorian Britain's most flamboyant and controversial figures, highlighting not just the officer but also the aristocrat, duelist, showman, and complex leader whose name has resonated through military history.## ## Thomas paints a vivid portrait of Cardigan's early life, tracing his rise through privilege and wealth in the British Army, his infamous duel with Captain Tuckett, and his turbulent personal relationships?all set against a backdrop of strict class structure and changing military reforms. With wit and scholarly accuracy, the book examines how Cardigan's iron discipline, vanity, and fierce pursuit of uniformity came to characterise his command style?sometimes admired, more often criticised by contemporaries and later historians. ## The core of the biography is the Charge at Balaclava in 1854?a moment of chaotic bravery and strategic miscommunication that saw Cardigan lead the Light Brigade into Russian fire under disputed orders. Thomas dissects the political and military fallout, portraying Cardigan as both hero and scapegoat, a man praised by Queen Victoria and criticised by the public press. The narrative examines whether Cardigan was a reckless commander or a dutiful soldier caught in the machinery of imperial war. ## Beyond battlefield analysis, the biography examines the enduring impact of the Crimean War on British military policy, social attitudes, and media portrayal. With sharp commentary and archival detail, Thomas provides insight into the culture of honour, class tensions, and institutional rigidity that influenced Cardigan's fate and reputation.## ## This book is essential reading for enthusiasts of military history, the Crimean War, British aristocracy, and Victorian society. It's a compelling exploration of leadership, legacy, and the paradoxes that accompany fame born of war. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS ONLY FOR THE UK. FIRST Edition Hardcover. 178 pages.; (380 grams); 'TRIXIE TRASH, STAR ASCENDING - "Margaret is above the "herd" she is fixed outside of time, matter and space --- of star quality.' 'I've learned so much working with you, You're a star, a bloody star' 'Miss Davis is madc of sterner stuff than most, it will take more titan a flight of fancy to destroy her.' The fortunes of Margaret Davis, the intmensely appealing central character of Tom Wakefield's picaresque novel, make for compelling reading. In its exploration of the patterns of friendship, kinship, love and passion, the book is by turn beguiling and brutal, amusing and sad, funny and compassionate. From Margaret's heroic solo performance, tap-dancing on the big drum at the age of eight, to a later solo flight through the air as Trixic Trash, film star. her personality reveals itself in a narrative of rare simplicity and directness. The story takes her from her early days in the mining town of Runnock, through her experiences there: life with her foster-mother, Florrie; dance lessons with Gloria Jones, Principal and sole teacher of the Glorianna School of Dancing; Frank, her first boy-friend; Lena Menton, 'teacher of drama and speech'; Richard Cartwright, the miner to whom she becomes engaged. Then London: to the strange household in Bayswater where she coma to hold such an important place; the Awkward Agency and its owner, Estelle Bingham Jones; the world of films and. among others, Larry Bonnard, the film director who gives her her first big chance, but whose real business is cruelty. Parallel to the story of external events is that of Margaret's search for inner identity, a starch which inevitably involves other people who, in our way or another, help Trixic to find some form of self-realisation and who are in turn themselves helped by Trixic to find themselves." Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Burgess's comprehensive survey of ceramic art and craftsmanship from its earliest origins to the early twentieth century. The work opens with an exploration of prehistoric pottery, tracing the development of form, decoration, and firing techniques in ancient cultures. Burgess examines the influence of classical civilisations, particularly Roman Britain, on the shaping of local traditions, and follows the evolution of medieval wares through to the refinement of glazes and decorative styles in the post-medieval period. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to early English pottery, with chapters organised by region and notable centres of production. Burgess discusses the distinctive characteristics of wares from Staffordshire, Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds, and other important locales, noting the contributions of individual potteries and craftsmen. He also addresses the rise of English porcelain manufacture, from the pioneering experiments of the eighteenth century to the established factories of the nineteenth, including Worcester, Chelsea, Bow, and Derby. The survey extends beyond Britain to encompass significant continental traditions, such as French faience, German stoneware, Dutch Delft, and Italian majolica, as well as the artistry of Oriental ceramics from China and Japan. Burgess places these traditions in their historical and cultural contexts, highlighting the exchange of ideas and techniques through trade and exploration. Throughout, the author pays close attention to materials, glazing methods, decorative motifs, and the evolution of shapes and functions. He offers guidance on identifying styles and periods, making the book a valuable reference for collectors, historians, and students of decorative arts. The text is supported by 130 illustrations, providing visual examples of notable pieces, patterns, and forms. Burgess writes with the dual aim of informing the serious collector and engaging the general reader, combining technical detail with accessible narrative. His work captures the enduring appeal of pottery and porcelain as both utilitarian objects and works of art, reflecting the skill, creativity, and cultural significance of the craft across centuries. ________________________________________ INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Reprint. The Art of Richard P. Feynman: Images by a Curious Character compiled by Michelle Feynman (2004 Hardcover no Dust Jacket) "Beginning with his earliest, awkward drawings of the human figure in 1962, the book displays Feynman's fascinating development of a personal artistic sensitivity to line, form and the moods of his subject; as well as his experimentation with various styles and media. The selected artwork was produced over a 25 year period until 1987, the year before his death. It mainly consists of black and white drawings, his favorite medium, all carefully chosen by his daughter, Michelle. This book brings together, for the first time, a collection of the artwork of Richard P. Feynman, scientist extraordinaire and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1965." You might be surprised that a world class physics professor at Caltech could have produced a body of artwork that would be compiled into a book. His daughter doubted it until she was approached to compile her father's work into this book. She discovered over 100 of his sketch books with a drawing on every page! Michelle has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and earns her living as a photographer. The first 60 pages are interviews or reminiscences about Richard P. Feynman as a man and/or artist. It is notable that the work which earned his Nobel Prize featured graphic diagrams which simplified the calculations of interaction between light and matter. His understanding of physics was visual even if multidimensional equations are impossible to draw! Hardcover has black cloth boards with silver lettering on spine and front, but no dust jacket. There is no colored artwork in this book, even in the section titled Color Plates. All is printed in-line in B&W, there are no plates. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Always privately owned. Copyright 1995. Reprinted 2004 by Routledge when licensed and transferred to digital printing. ISBN: 2-88449-047-7. No LCCN nor MSR. Thanks for looking! No Ownership Markings.
