This book, in nine chapters, covers a young boy's life as a Wichita resident in the Delano District. This book is a collection of stories about a boy, Danny, who lived in this west side neighborhood in the 1950s. The earlier history of Delano is touched upon, supported by period photographs and factual research. And the flavor of the 1950s, when so much began that is pertinent today?credit cards, consumer wealth, disaffected segments of society, and modern informal living?is captured in the adventures of one boy. This is a book that will allow the past to live again for those who were there. It is a book that will describe the times in current terms for those who want to trace the track of progress. And it is a book for those who like a good story, aided by contemporary photographs depicting the grace and feel of modest Kansas streets. There are pleasant lessons, humorous events that can only happen to the young in the safe streets of a Midwestern city. A current of misfortune also can be seen, linked to the postwar boom, the delayed expectations of those who fought overseas, and the lives they sought to have upon their return. DELANO can be thought of as a souvenir of decade, and a reminder of the current needs of community in the twenty-first century. A clean very presentable copy.

The author was a first generation Irish who writes of his family and his upbringing on a farmstead at the Arkansas River and South Hydraulic Street in Wichita Kansas where he was born in 1885. His father, Florence or Big Flurry, was from Ireland, married a girl from New York and moved to Wichita to become a farmer, a profession he was not good at. The author tells of family life, his upbringing, the problems of being Irish and Catholic in Kansas, and of a multitude of family problems both farming and marital. The author went on to graduate from Friends University, was the editor of the Wichita Eagle in 1912, and later moved to New York where he was a successful journalist and columnist.
