A series of COPPERPLATE scenes of HERMITS and Saints in 108 plates. 4 works with 4 title pages and including the title pages of copper engravings of Saints in hermitages or places of Solitude all with landscape backgrounds, many plagued by demons and hellish creatures. Oblong quarto. Some handling throughout and some plates have repairs from the back, not affecting the images, the name J Le Clerc appears within the images and each plate with a 4 line Latin proverb beneath said images. Bound in a contemporary or near, half vellum, speckled paper boards, plates handed with some ingrained handling wear to some plates at fore edges, the title to the first part the "Oraculum" has been re-laid and trimmed to edges, plate 8 of this part has a closed split (no loss) plate 12 has a small repair at the back, plates 19/20 have a brown stain within the images and repairs at the reverse. one plate (plate 25) in the 2nd work has a repair on the back and one plate (no 49) re-laid. the last title "Solitudo Sive Vitae, etc" plate 97 has several brown spots on both sides, plate 100 repaired and this is noticeable, last 4 plates strengthened at the gutters and last two plates transposed and there is a 2 page "Register" of the plates in Mss at the rear. A GOOD and most complete set to be offered with both this engravers name and the unusual collection of these 4 titles. There is a copy in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University. In their copy and bound similarly to this they have: Sylvae sacrae, Solitudo: sive, Vitae foeminarum anachoritarum, Oraculum anachoreticum, and the added title of Trophaum vitae solitariae, which this lacks but has the Solitudo Sive Patrum, which the Beinecke copy hasn't. I add this as the above copy is the only one located with the engraver as Johann or Jan Le Clerc and he dates to 1560-1621, working mainly in Paris as a Geographer and Copperplate Engraver. He did collaborate with Thomas De Leu and his name does appear on other imprints? But usually on other sets and individual titles of these plates that are attributed to Jan or Johann Sadeler as the engraver? Undated c1600 (Others date similar engraving WITH the variant printers as between 1600 and 1623).…

The elaborately engraved title incorporates a flute, recorder, bassoon, trumpet, violin, lute, horticultural and architectural motifs, an open score with several bars of recitative scored for voice and basso continuo, without text, and the quotation "Non ante vulgatas per Artes / Verba loquor Socianda Chordis;" Walsh used this much-admired passepartout title with altered titling for a number of his publications. Galliard, a German composer and oboist, active in England, "certainly played a significant role in London's musical life in the first half of the 18th century. He was a founder-member of both the Academy of Vocal (later Ancient) Music in 1726 and the Royal Society of Musicians in 1738, directing the first performance of the former. His translation of Tosi's singing manual is very felicitous, and he added some intelligent notes; he had known Tosi in London earlier in the century. Burney wrote of Galliard's music, 'I never saw more correctness or less originality . Dr. Pepusch always excepted', but he was rather more generous elsewhere in his History, and both he and Fiske recognized Galliard and Pepusch as the leading composers of English theatre music before the 1730s. Charles Didbin thought Galliard had 'considerable genius', and if Dr Kitchener is to be believed, Handel in old age told the youthful Samuel Arnold that he had so high an opinion of Calypso and Telemachus that he would sooner have composed it than any of his own operas. First published in 1621, The Anatomie of Melancholy was a landmark book in psychology. The book was presented as a medical textbook on the subject of melancholia (clinical depression). The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text. The Anatomy uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshaled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference. "This deeply serious work by a layman was said by Osler to be "a great medical treatise" (Osler 4621). The author, under the assumed name of Democritus Junior, offers many causes for melancholy, discusses the cure of its many forms and, in his studious discussion, throws much light on the customs and social attitudes of the day. It is a medical work in that, in all its seventy and more editions, it has continued to express the author's understanding of human psychiatric problems. Almost half of the thousand references to other authors are medical. The work was one of Dr. Samuel Johnson's favorites." - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 406. "Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy (1638) begins with a magnificent confection, a title page of ten compartments each corresponding to a numbered stanza in the prefatory poem 'The Argument of the Frontispiece.' Compartment 10, for example, portrays Burton, not out of vanity of the author but rather at the insistence of the printed, at least according to the amusing stanza 10. This design is very special information display. The title page and accompanying poem reflect the book's argument, organization, and intellectual method. That method -- the cutting and pasting of images and words -- is announced in the opening lines: Ten distinct Squares here seene apart, And joyn'd in one by Cutters art. Moreover, the confectionary design of the title page reproduces the intellectual architecture of The Anatomy of Melancholy: about one-third of the book consists of quotations and another third of paraphrases. Prose adaptation of Sir John Davies' oracle,Nosce Teipsum(Know Thyself) by the English author, engraver, and publisher, Thomas Jenner (died 1673). Jenner first published a book under this title in 1653, which consisted of the main elegy of Nosce Teipsum,"Of the soule of man, and the immortalitie thereof." This prose version is a different work entirely, and also contains an original essay from Jenner, "What heaven is, vindicated from the vulgar mistakes, and grosse conceivings of many." Freeman describes this publication as a borderline example of an emblem book, not strictly adhering to her criteria. The eight plates represent understanding, memory, the sense of smell, hearing, seeing, will, feeling, and fancy. The ESTC makes a note: "Each illustration with engraved verse below. A variant lacks engraved verse." This copy is likely the variant described, with most plates lacking all or part of the verse and title caption, and signature marks at times appear in the illustrations themselves. A very intriguing work with finely executed, imaginative illustrations. Most publications from Jenner are scarce, and this is no exception. ESTC locates 3 copies in U.S. institutions, two of them at the Huntington. ESTC R27853. Freeman pg 239.
