Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good-. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover's, original full leather bindings with raised bands and labels to spine. Exterior is untreated and unclean with leather cracking at hinges, first volume has what appears to be ink or paint on the front board. This is a rare first edition and was published simultaneously in the same year in London with the Dublin printing being the most scarce. Later volumes of this title were issued in 1784 and also 1786. The interior bindings of both volumes are good though there are some issues. Volume 1 (616 pp.) is missing the front and rear free end page and has a library bookplate on the pastedown which reads 'Ex Bibliotheca Congregationis SS. Redemptoris Neo-Aureliae" and the title page of each volume is stamped stating these books were assigned to the Redemptorist Library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. Volume 2 (606 pp.) has the top inch of the title page cut off as well the last inch and 1/2 of the rear free end page. In both cases these were cut to remove a signature. Only other markings found in book is on the first page of volume 2 where there is some remnants of handwriting. Volume 2 also has a small stain in the bottom outside corner and may possibly be missing one of the front three end pages. Pages are quite tone due to age and spotting and foxing is present throughout. Volume 2 exterior also has a vertical crack near the center of the spine leather. Note: these are considered ex-library even though they originally belonged to and are marked as being from a church.…

Ajouter au panier2 volumes. First edition. With a fold-out table in volume one. 8vo, full contemporary polished calf ruled in gilt, the spine with raised bands ruled and tooled in gilt and with tan morocco lettering labels in gilt. xiv, 412; 382 [index] pp. A very handsome set, beautifully bound at the time and in especially pleasing condition, minor evidence of age or use. FIRST EDITION in English of Martiniere's continuation to 1743, translated from the French by Joseph Sayer. Pufendorf (1632-1694), the important German jurist, was appointed historiographer-royal of Stockholm in 1677. "At once philosopher, lawyer, economist, historian and statesman.his influence was considerable, and he has left a profound impression on thought, and not on that of Germany alone." Lowndes IV, 2006. Ennobled in 1694; he was made a baron by Charles XI of Sweden a few months before his death at age 62. Among his achievements are his commentaries and revisions of the natural law theories of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius. His political concepts are part of the cultural background of the American Revolution. Pufendorf is seen as an important precursor of the German Enlightenment. He was involved in constant quarrels with clerical circles and frequently had to defend himself against accusations of heresy, despite holding largely traditional Christian views on matters of dogma and doctrine. John Locke, David Hume, Edward Gibbon, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Denis Diderot all recommended Pufendorf's inclusion in law curricula, and he greatly influenced Blackstone and Montesquieu. After Pufendorf was called to Stockholm as Historiographer Royal in 1677, he began a new period of historical writing. To this new period belong Einleitung zur Historie der vornehmsten Reiche und Staaten ("Introduction to the History of the Principal Kingdoms and States of Europe"as offered here, as well as Commentarium de rebus suecicis libri XXVI., ab expeditione Gustavi Adolphi regis in Germaniam ad abdicationem usque Christinae and De rebus a Carolo Gustavo gestis. In his historical works, Pufendorf wrote in a dry style, but he professed a great respect for truth and generally drew from archival sources.…
