Robinson. poetry. sufism. medieval literature. mysticism. history of persia. ~ One of the greatest of all Persian poets, Omar Kayyam was born towards the end of the 11th century in the northeastern Khorassan region. He spent his entire life in Naishapur devoted to the extensive pursuit of knowledge, so excelling in astronomy as to surpass the eminent authorities of his time. The reigning Sultan, Shah Malik, particularly showered him with royal favors. Khayyam was actually the poet's rather singular pen name ~"Takhallus" in Persian, or "Tentmaker". This unwonted sobriquet was a reference to the trade the poet practiced before he became established as a man of learning. Khayyam failed for a long while to gain popularity in Persia, and his works were little known abroad. His manuscripts were altered and mutilated with far more abandon than has generally been the case for other Eastern writers. The Rubaiyat (or Tetrastichs, as they are sometimes called) comprise a series of distinct, four~line stanzas conforming to a fairly consistent pattern. The original choice of rhyme created an unusual juxtaposition of light and serious tones. Thoroughly Epicurean, the poet's philosophy approaches that adopted by many a Western author: "Drink and make merry" is the refrain that recurs throughout his work. Although most of the miniatures illustrating the present volume have been selected to portray some aspect of the poet's visions, they do merit consideration in their own right particularly as they are generally unfamiliar to the public at large. Indeed, approximately half of those featuring in the present volume ~ miniatures from the Reza Abbasi Museum ~ are being published now only for the first time. Persian art of the miniature may well be termed one of the most original chapters in universal art. 0ne never tires of that distinctive graphic quality, that variety of decorative motive, or that richness of color which is so characteristic of these works. The noted British specialist, B. W. Robinson provides a succinct description of the main periods of the classic miniature era in his foreword to the present edition.…
