During this time he climbed Mount Fuji, here called Mount Fusi-jama. There are two small humourous sketches in the text illustrating the ascent and descent. There are a number of illustrations includ…ing colour lithographs, b&w folding and foldout and monotone. There is no list of the illustrations and there are variations in the few copies I have traced, with none identical. There seem to be a couple of additional plates in the 2nd edition. However,I think this copy may have 2 plates missing. It has 8 plates. 1.Outside Sowanada col. lithograph. Dampstaining just coming into the left of the picture. 2.Outline of a Map of Japan showing the Route through the Sowanada Sea. Monotone folding plate. 3. Mountain of Fusi-Jama (Fuji) B&w folding plate.Light spotting to upper part. Small damp stain to lower corner. 4. British Consulate, Kanagawa. Col. lithograph. Dampstaining to left margin. Light foxing to right margin. 5. Japanese Play Bill. B&w. Large fold out, 6.Gods of Fusijama (Fuji). B&w. Folding. Damp stain across lower third of the plate. 7. Inside Sonawada. Col. lithograph. Damp stain to right margin just coming into the image towards the lower corner. 8. Stables of Fanes Horse. Monotone. Damp stain to lowerpart of the margin. Image not affected.Light spotting at top. With 6 small illustrations in text. Bound in the original red cloth with gilt decoration and title to the spine. Blind-stamped borders to both boards, but with a central cartouche with figurein gilt on the front board. The spine and front board are sunned. Wear to spine ends. Some colour loss to lower section of the front board from water or damp. There is a little colour bleed to the lower edges of the endpapers. The book has been professionally recased with the hinges reinforced with matching paper. There is a School prize inscription on the front endpaper. 'Presented by the Duchess of Buccleuch to Levi B Bagshaw. Latham's School. Weekley. 24th Nov. 1869'. The book is bound in thick card covered by brown cloth, the cloth…has not been fully attached but is attached by stitched cord (see pictures). Rubbing to edges of cloth, splits to upper joint and less so to head and foot of same joint. Title information is hand-written to spine cloth. Splits to hinge between board and free end paper and between pages 2 and 3. Contemporary note to inside of front wrap 'Maria Cooke, Lady, Norfolk' and contemporary gift inscription to free end paper by the author reading 'Hannah Maria Cooke, Lady(?) With the author's kind regards, Captain Curling'. Foxing to end papers. Book is large with fairly weak binding leaving the text-block a little weak and in some areas with some freedom. Number '292' of only 295 copies published. The BOOK is in Fine unread condition. It is housed in its' original slipcase which is in near Fine condition. The book has been numbered and sign…ed by the author and illustrator to the publisher's official bookplate to the front pastedown, as called for. The frontispiece pocket contains an original copperplate etching of John Arlott by Norman Ackroyd. This has been numbered (292/295) and signed by Norman Ackroyd and run off on his presses. The plate has been destroyed. The book is ' a celebration of cricket, wine, poetry and prose'. It contains eleven of Ackroyd's etchings, accompanied by appropriate pieces of Arlott's prose and poetry. There is the additional commentary by David Rayvern Allen, Arlott's biographer and an old friend of Norman Ackroyd. The books is printed on fine 200gm Zanders Medley Plus Creme paper and is hand bound in British green leather. The book was launched in 2002 at the Fine Art Society.
