In little more than a hundred pages he discusses the political setting of early Christianity; contemporary forms of religious expression, both Jewish and Hellenistic; institutions from temple and synagogue to the Greek polis and Hellenistic kingship; scripture and its interpretation, from Philo via Qumran to the rabbis; and the feeling dominant at the time of being involved in a struggle between the powers of light and the powers of darkness. This can now claim to be the best available introduction to the subject which is not only factual and reliable, but holds the reader's interest from beginning to end. Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Good. In this memorable, haunting book Frank Wright, well known for his writing and work in the area of pastoral care, explores the nature of the neglected subject of goodness from a background of modern literature and philosophy as well as theology, and indicates different lines on which it may be nurtured. For years, he points out, there has been a deafening silence on the subject of goodness even in theological and church life. Evil is so prevalent and pervasive, so relentlessly portrayed in the media, that the possibility and attraction of goodness is clouded over. Yet it is there, and as we begin to look at what makes us call people 'good', we are led beyond them to that which is beyond themselves, to God. What Frank Wright offers is an exploration and an invitation: gentle, sensitive, perceptive. It is also in its quiet way a challenge -and one that is difficult to forget. Frank Wright is a Canon Emeritus of Manchester Cathedral. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

There is a good, though brief, introduction, in which especial attention is paid to the discussion of the literary affinities of Daniel. The original translation takes account of all relevant recent work, while the commentary is full and first class. The author has read and digested a considerable amount of modern literature on Daniel and brought to it his own careful and balanced judgement. His critical positions are rarely new, but in the reviewer's opinion they are sound - and sound judgement is better than novelty! On many of the problems of the book an incredible amount has been written, expressing an enormous variety of opinions. Professor Porteous is not concerned with the history of interpretation, and contents himself with a brief treatment of such questions, presenting his own considered view or suspending judgement where a decision between competing views cannot be made with confidence . More important than all such matters is the religious and theological value of the book, and it is his attention to this that gives Professor Porteous's commentary its special quality, and makes it a notable addition to the series for which it has been written' (Society for Old Testament Study Book List). Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. 'The book is immensely readable; although it is clearly the work of a scholar, its abundant learning is firmly directed to practical ends. Often, when dealing with a point such as the real purpose of an obscure parable, or the authenticity of a probable late gloss, two or three theories are quoted and examined; the discussion is always scrupulously fair, but in every case Dr Hunter leaves the reader in no doubt that he feels that one answer is better than the others, and he explains just why he considers that it is better. Puzzling stories like the Unjust, Steward, the Labourers in the Vineyard, the Barren Fig Tree and the Importunate Widow, are convincingly explained. And the whole book is written in sinewy down-to-earth terms, as though the writer has got you by the coat lapels and is saying, "Now look here, man, this is the way it is; take it or leave it". I like a book to be written in that way, so long as it also sets out enough evidence to enable you to disagree intelligently with the author if you want to; and this book does just that' (The Inquirer). Superficially just a good missionary story, about how one man brought a number of groups of Masai people in east Africa to Christian faith, it is something much more than that. For in what the author says about the method and content of evangelism; the meaning of the eucharist; and the nature of ministry, we are led back to the question our understandings of the mission of the church in all its contexts. For Donovan, his experiences in Africa meant a total reappraisal of the meaning of his faith, and therefore a rediscovery of his Christianity. His book, which is written with moving simplicity, continues to represent a provocative challenge to all those engaged in issues of evangelism and multiculturalism. The rationale behind it is that students should not complete an introductory course without having been exposed to a wide variety of competing approaches and having gained some broad knowledge of the tradition, rather than studying methodological concerns only. The extracts are accompanied by commentary and annotation. They are divided into themed chapters, and ordered chronologically within chapters. Figures from different periods of history are included within each chapter, in order to represent the breadth of theological traditions, while texts are also included which represent some form of ongoing debate, in order to meet pedagogical needs. Commentary on each text outlines the historical situation of the author and the literary context of the extract, while each chapter offers an introductory essay highlighting the central debates and concerns in that area and indicating how the texts illustrate and illuminate these.

Amongst the churches, Anglicanism is distinctive by virtue of its attempt to participate in the life and purposes of God and to make them known through history and in the practicalities of particular situations. Yet the distinctiveness of this position, and what its implications are for the Church's ongoing life, are not well appreciated. As a result, the churches of the Anglican Communion often find themselves caught in painful struggles about major issues concerning their own basis and practice, to such a degree that there are constant threats of division. The essays in this book begin from the struggles which have emerged in recent years, since the 1998 Lambeth conference, and show the deeper issues at stake. They respond with proposals for the future, focusing especially on the wisdom which manifests itself in the Church, and how this needs to be furthered in the worship, order and practice of the Church in the breadth of its mission in each place. They conclude with some considerations of the wider role of the Church in responding to spirituality and money. Together they form a powerful statement of the tasks of Anglicanism today from which other traditions have much to learn. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. This book is for adults who have some influence with children, and especially those who are regularly in touch with them: parents, grandparents, teachers, clergy and friends. It is concerned with questions which need to be explored about how to understand the Christian faith and commend it to the next generation. At present, Helen Oppenheimer believes, many people are being crippled by inadequate notions of the Christian faith, which make it difficult either to live it out or to impart credible beliefs to children. It is over this that she seeks to offer help. Here is no talking down, no suppressing questions, but an approach which attracts from the very first page, 'Even to children it ought to be possible to say, "This is what I believe. Lots of people disagree. Ask them what they think." If that is going to muddle them, it must muddle them still more to say, "This is what children ought to believe but never mind: it doesn't have anything much to do with grown-up life." 'Here are no trusty donkeys, a few sheep and a kind Shepherd, or even 'Jesus loves you', 'Jesus is your friend', but a discussion of belief and behaviour, finding God in creation, in providence, in grace, in church, in the Bible, in people, in things, which illuminates even the most difficult of issues and allows them to be considered without superficiality. What Christians of all ages need rather than naivety, Helen Oppenheimer also argues, is a kind of faithful openness to questioning. And above all, nothing short of the deepest sincerity will do. These are qualities which she herself shows here, and in addition to the wise advice she gives, her book is a delight to read. Helen Oppenheimer is an Anglican wife and mother who writes on Christian ethics and theology. She was awarded a Lambeth DD for her work on Christian ethics. In this long-awaited sequel, he moves from Africa, where he sought to present Christ without the usual paraphernalia of missionary work, to the Western world, and sets out to answer the question: We see quite plainly the church as it is, but what should it be like?' Arguing that our times ore comparable only with those of the earliest church, when Paul sought to open up the gospel to non-Jews without demanding obedience to the Jewish law, Fr Donovan pictures a church which has grown out of the uniformity, specialization and centralization which have dominated it since the Council of Trent and the Industrial Revolution. He looks for a more-than-Mediterranean Christ, new life for the sacraments and new forms for the church. It is time, he claims, for the church to be evangelized by the world. Those who have been moved by Christianity Rediscovered will find here a book which, if anything, speaks even more to their condition. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. In preparation for the volume on Christianity to be published in `The Religious Situation of Our Time', Hans Kung here presents, in the same lucid style as his recent best-selling Credo, a study of seven of the greatest Christian thinkers. After 'A Brief Introduction to Theology' he begins with Paul, as a result of whose activity Christianity broke through to become a world religion. Then come Origen, who made a controversial synthesis between the Christian spirit and the spirit of antiquity, and Augustine, the father of Western, Latin theology. Thomas Aquinas represents the learning of the universities and papal court theology, and Martin Luther is introduced as representing a return to the gospel in a classic case of a paradigm shift. Schleiermacher is a theologian at the dawn of modern times, and the book ends at the opposite pole from him, with Karl Barth, standing on the threshold of post-modernity. An epilogue explains what theology is all about. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

This book by a distinguished Roman Catholic marital counsellor and senior consultant at the Central Middlesex Hospital, and the former Anglican Bishop of Birmingham, who was also Chairman of the Church of England's Board for Social Responsibility, arose out of the Margaret Harris lectures given in Dundee in 1988. It is probably the first time that a Roman Catholic and an Anglican have joined forces in this way, and the result is an important contribution to the discussion of sexual ethics today. After an introduction to sexual ethics, Hugh Montefiore contributes chapters on homosexuality, and abortion and infra vitro fertilization; Jack Dominian writes on masturbation and pre-marital sexual intercourse, and marriage and marital breakdown. Both speak as loyal and committed members of their respective churches, but believe that this loyalty and commitment requires them to look again at some of the human dilemmas experienced in these intimate questions of love and sex, sometimes leading them to conclusions which differ from the official teaching of their churches. Like its predecessor it has three features which make it different from other histories, so that it is aimed at the widest possible audience. First, it does not separate church history from the wider history of the world in which it is set. Christians live in that wider world, and political, social and economic developments often determine the life of the church. Secondly, it provides direct quotations from the written sources. To make sure that the account covers British and American, as well as French and European, history, an English-speaking historian joins the French author. 'The approach is ecumenical, covering with good balance the full range of denominational developments in the Western church and its missionary outreach .In general this is a clear, well-written account .the language is accessible not only to an adult but also to a student readership' (Expository Times). For Hans Kung, as for many other people, something can sometimes appear in Mozart's music which goes beyond the human dimension and gives intimations of a bliss which transcends even all music. In this short book he sets out to identify what it is. Much, he argues, has been written about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but relatively little about the religious dimension of his person and music. While it is completely taken for granted that Johann Sebastian Bach has Protestant roots and was a pious man, that Mozart was a Catholic and wrote music for masses is virtually ignored. So the first part of the book looks at Mozart's life and music from this perspective and asks how it contributes towards those 'traces of transcendence' which may be perceptible to those open to them. The second part sheds new light on Mozart's Coronation Mass by setting it against its contemporary cultural and political horizon and the critical confrontation with religion beginning at the time of its composition. Here is a work which is not only worthy to stand alongside Karl Barth's famous study, but which for many readers will even eclipse it. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Christian life is graced by transition into Christlikeness which requires us to make choices, continually, to remain faithful to Christ. At times of transition we seek the will of God as we journey through life making decisions about what to do and where to go next in the service of God and our neighbour. This experience is common to all Christians but in Called to Love the focus is on those in ordained ministry and those aspiring to ordination and explores how we discern God's will and how we make decisions about the direction of our ministry. At the heart of our ministry is love, but how is Love best served. Does the freedom which Love bestows allow us, as individuals and the Church of God, to employ such decision making methods as seem best to us? What can organisational practices in decision making can offer us? Raymond Tomkinson considers how we articulate the stirrings of the heart to others. During it, Schillebeeckx talked 'as though he had met you in the street and you had asked for directions, or as if he was sitting at a table in a cafe'. His language, originally a mixture of English, French and German, and then rendered into Italian, is clearer than in his many books, and his style is warm, humorous and personal. First he talks about his life, and then he focusses on some of the theological questions which have particularly interested him: creation, eschatology, ethics, the church and its ministries. He suggested that she should compose an anthology of English spirituality. Though she was not aware of it, Rabbi Blue says, Joanna Hughes was a spiritual person unsentimental, original and honest. The result is a rare collection of material, including unknown people, better known though unexpected poets, and very ordinary people who said extraordinary things. The collection begins with the Venerable Bede and Alfred the Great, and ends with Sir Winston Churchill, , Dorothy L. Sayers, C. S. Lewis and Archbishop William Temple. At first privately printed, this book has been so treasured by others, both living and dying, that it is now published for all to enjoy and benefit from. With a preface by Rabbi Lionel Blue, who writes: 'I have shown this book to rabbinical students, to businessmen, to friends who believe and to those who don't. To all of them it is a window into English religion at its truest.' Joanna M. Hughes died in 1986. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. As a result, it has slowly developed an entirely new position from which today to survey the capitalist leviathan. What this book sets out to do is to chronicle that development and highlight the insights it has formed which have a particular resonance for the world as it enters the twenty-first century. Michael Walsh describes developments from Rerum Novarum to Vatican II, and Brian Davies the work of John XXIII and Vatican II itself. Julian Filochowski looks at the early social doctrine of Paul VI, and the encyclicals of John Paul II are discussed by Ian Linden, Clifford Langley and Julie Clague. Finally, Paul Vallely looks into the new millennium beyond John Paul II. The book is an important contribution to political and social thought at the beginning of the new millennium. Authoritative, positive and open, its appeal is far from restricted to Catholics or even Christians. Its distinguished contributors offer suggestions for a thought which might combine economic efficiency with social concerns to create a more compassionate community. This book provides a clear and simple guide to the main themes of his theology, and shows how they are related to his reading of the Bible, his careful and wide-ranging engagement with the Christian tradition, and his grappling with contemporary culture. It shows how the Archbishop's ideas about peace or about popular culture, about sexuality or about evangelism, relate to his understanding of the life of God, and of the challenging good news of Jesus christ. The book is designed especially for those who have no academic expertise or formal training in theology, but are interested in finding out more about what Rowan Williams stands for.
