Gray wraps are in fine condition. 8 ½ x 6 ¾, 38 pages, 3 ounces XX This is not a simple book of nostalgic poems for a childhood past. Yes, it is all about being young in the 1930s in West Texas and being a young man in World War II. But Smith looks deeply into the complexity and simplicity of childhood in that semi-arid area of Texas. Chores were to be done, but there was also playtime, mainly with whatever or whoever was at hand. Parents were loving but sometimes exasperated and exasperating. Older relatives were just as boring as preachers. School was certainly not always fun, especially if you had an older, smarter sister. Revenge could be achieved on a bully finally with a mud sandwich. There was an unsolved mystery about a young teacher caught crying. Many of the images and lines are quite poignant and revealing: I could not be totally attached (could you?)/To a team whose yell was Cock-a-doodle-do. The toys are wilder than my boyhood world/But they will not know how the spirit soared/Holding for dear life on the running board. And while the basement Scout troop didn't make/ us skilled, artistic, civil-tongued or wise/at least we learned how to apologize. Those phonies on the screen we paid to see/They didn't have it half as hard as me. Out East of town there was 'The Colony' / the name for where the men with problems lived. [reference to the Abilene States School, originally built for men with epilepsy [!] and then opened up to men with developmental problems]. Even the title Where Is the Love That Went into the Gate is very moving as it refers to the struggle to put up a gate and make it just right, so it will swing open and close easily, a task done with love and care, and decades later forgotten as it sags and hangs slackly. I wish I could find information on this poet, but he seems to be gone like the gate.
