International and domestic actors questioning freedom of the press in Turkey do not adopt a comprehensive approach, instead confining the issue to the more attractive and popular sphere of daily political debates. The biggest obstacles before freedom o…f the press in Turkey, however, do not stem from the political will but from nonpolitical power circles. The issue is exacerbated by the fact that violations of press freedom, caused by power instruments outside of politics, are cynical and difficult to resist in nature. This book aims to discuss the freedom of the press in Turkey within a new context and propose an alternative to the instrumental yet widespread attitude adopted solely for political goals. At the same time, the authors intend to reveal the structural problems that freedom of the press experiences in Turkey, shed light on specific areas of restrictions on the press today, and expose the power centers behind these restrictions. The crux of this study is to identify and draw attention to the problems journalists, who are devoted to the enlightenment of society, experience, and to offer guidance for protecting the freedom of the press in the future. The study is based on in-depth interviews with prominent journalists and international reports on the subject.

Thanks to its open door policy, Turkey has become the country hosting the highest number of refugees in the world and has created a living space for millions of Syrians. According to official figures, Turkey hosts 2,724,927 Syrians and thus takes the burden of the humanitarian crisis on its shoulders. Each Syrian is important for Turkey, as is their adaptation to Turkish public life. The most crucial elements of orientation towards public life are education and employment. With respect to employment, Turkey has taken considerable steps. In addition to this, the education of Syrian children requires a road map so as not to create lost generations for the future of Turkey and Syria. The NGOs in Turkey have taken great responsibility for the education of Syrians and play an important role in offering advice for the Ministry of National Education¿s (MEB) road map. However, only one in three Syrian children is schooled ¿ this is evidence that the NGO-based short-term solutions are not enough and long-term public policymaking is required. From the first years of the crisis in Syria, the SETA Foundation has been supporting the policymaking process especially in terms of educating Syrians, aiding their legal status and their adaptation to public life. The SETA Foundation is especially sensitive on the issue of Syrians¿ education and in this study aims to contribute to developing a road map on Syrians¿ education and to work against the creation of lost generations.

The night of July 15 was the longest night of Turkish Democracy. In the course of this night, members of Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), which has be…en infiltrating the Turkish Armed Forces for about four decades, tried to stage a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected government and suspend the constitution of the Turkish Republic. During this night, the Gülen coup attempt was defeated mainly by the peaceful civil disobedience of Turkish citizens from all segments of Turkish society. Turkish people realized that the democratic order of their country was in danger of being abolished by the followers of a false messiah. They realized that this was also an assault on their freedom, independence, and the future of their children. That's why they were ready to sacrifice their lives -a sacrifice that they made. The tally of the casualties was shocking: FETÖ members massacred 240 people, of which 173 were civilians and injured another 2,195 civilians. The aim of this book is to overcome the prejudice and the misunderstanding against Turkey by analysing the events that took place on that night and the developments that followed.
