Per Wikipedia, Albert Rhys Williams (September 28, 1883 - February 27, 1962), Commonly Known By His Middle Name, Pronounced "Reece," Was An American Journalist, Labor Organizer, And Publicist. He Is Most Famous For Writing Memoirs In Favor Of The 1917 October Revolution In Russia: He Had Been Both A Witness And A Participant. Williams Worked For The 1908 Presidential Campaign Of Socialist Eugene Debs. Then, Williams Returned To His Main Profession As A Minister Of The Maverick Square Congregational Church In East Boston (1908 To 1914). However He Did Not Abandon The Labor And Social Issues At All. In 1912, Williams Raised Money And Spoke Up For The Workers During The 1912 Textile Strike In Lawrence, Massachusetts. Williams First Met John Reed, Whose Acquaintance Played A Role In His Upcoming Interest In Russia And Then His Trip To This Far Overseas Country. Williams First Came Into Contact With The Bolsheviks In 1917 As A Correspondent For The New York Post. He Attended The Storming Of The Winter Palace, Met And Became Close Friends With Vladimir Lenin, And Stayed In The Country Until 1918. Upon His Return To The United States, He Worked As A Pro-Soviet And Communist Activist.[1] Williams Was A Vocal Opponent Of The Allied Intervention In The Russian Civil War And Deployment Of American Troops On Russian Soil, Stating, "I Never Ceased To Feel Shame For The Role My Country Played In This Joint Effort To Strangle Bolshevism In Its Cradle And Socialism For Good And All."[2] He Eventually Volunteered For Service In The Red Army, And Was Placed In Charge Of Organizing An International Legion. Williams Wrote Of This, "If I Helped In Some Small Way To Mitigate The Guilt Of Being An American, I Am Satisfied."[3] Williams Lived On And Off In Russia, First Moving There At The Outbreak Of The Russian Civil War And Last Leaving Sometime After Marrying Lucita Squier In 1923, Thereafter Only Returning To Visit In 1930, 1937, And 1959.[2] During His Period Of Relations With The Soviets, He Authored A Number Of Related Books And Papers.[3] Though Later Personally Critical Of Joseph Stalin, He Refused To Publicly Criticize The Union Itself, And Maintained A Pro-Soviet Stance For The Rest Of His Life.[4] Before His Death, Williams Wrote, "If I Have Remained True To The Revolution And Still Look Forward To The Final Triumph Of Socialism In The World, It Is Because, Like Lenin, I Do Believe In The Essential Goodness Of Man." An Odd And In Many Views A Monumentally Stupid Conclusion From Intimate And Long-Standing Knowledge Of Soviet Treatment Of Anyone Who Disagreed With The Government Program Or Criticized Its Leaders. Etat : Fine. SOLE EDITION. Bound in late 19th or early 20th c. marbled boards, spine mended. A nice copy with the impressions of bearer type on the first and final leaf. Small light dampstain to corner of two leaves and some light spots on final printed leaf. A rare polemic by Philip Melanchthon against the radical reformer Thomas Müntzer, the "murderous and bloodthirsty prophet" and the most significant figure in the second, crucial phase of the Peasants' War. In the face of crushing taxation and crop failures, the German peasants had declared open rebellion against the oppression of their feudal lords. Müntzer encouraged them with fiery oratory and led them into battle. The peasants' were defeated at the Battle of Frankenhausen. Captured in battle, Müntzer was executed by beheading, his body was impaled, and his head stuck on a stake outside the gates of Mühlhausen, where it remained for years. This book was printed a month after Müntzer's decisive defeat. Melanchthon's purpose in publishing this book was to show that Müntzer was a tool of the devil and to warn others not to follow his teachings. The book contains a speech purportedly given by Müntzer to rally his troops as they prepared to meet the armies of the Saxon and Hessian princes on 17 May 1525 at Frankenhausen. Contemporary reports indicate Müntzer did in fact give a speech, but the text as given in this book was almost certainly composed by Melanchthon and his allies. Thomas Müntzer In 1523, Müntzer, formerly the leader of the radical "Zwickau Prophets" began to radicalize the area of Allstedt, where he was then pastor, preaching that the ungodly were to be eliminated and the elect would establish a kingdom of Christ on earth and threatening the political rulers of the area with rebellion. In early 1524, as Müntzer grew bolder in his denunciation of the authorities and called for an elimination of the enemies of God, he divided the citizenry into military units in order to resist any outside interference in his activities. Müntzer openly challenged and attacked Luther, who was openly opposed to Müntzer's ministry of the elect, as one of "our mad, debauching pigs, which are horrified by the windstorm, the raging billows and by all the waters of wisdom." Following the Battle of Frankenhausen, Müntzer was captured and executed by beheading. His body was impaled and his head stuck on a stake outside the gates of Mühlhausen, where it remained for years. Following Müntzer's execution on May 27, Luther would write "I killed Müntzer; his death is on my shoulders. But I did it because he wanted to kill my Christ'". (Brecht Vol II, p. 185) The Peasants' War The Peasants' War was one of the bloodiest chapters in the turbulent early history of the German Reformation. The uprising began in upper Swabia in early 1524 and quickly spread to southern and western Germany, as well as to parts of Switzerland and Austria. The peasants were motivated by a number of factors: crushing taxation, lack of a voice in government, no recourse to the courts, crop failure, and helplessness in the face of their feudal masters' demands. But whereas these conditions had resulted in smaller uprisings in the past, the massive rebellion of 1524-5 was also a result of the turbulent upheaval caused by the nascent Reformation. By the time the rebellion was crushed in late 1525, some 100,000 combatants and civilians had been killed. Reprisals were carried out for the next two years, and the peasants' demands, as outlined in their Twelve Articles, came to nothing. "There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that the words are Müntzer's; he certainly made some kind of speech, and an idea of what he said was reported by men such as Hans Hut, who had been at Müntzer's side. But Melanchthon was on that day in Wittenberg, 150 kms distant, and certainly would not have been able to record the words spoken. At best, the text is reported third-hand and faulty; at worst, it is a complete fabrication."(Drummond) In Melanchthon's version of the.…

The present sammelband presents a cross-section of sixteenth-century theological writing, encapsulating both the intellectual and polemical ferment of the Reformation as well as the enduring theological authority of the patristic tradition. At its heart are two translations of Jean Calvin's Catechism of the Church of Geneva (one in Hebrew by Immanuel Tremellius, and the other in Greek by Henri Estienne) each printed by Robert Estienne at Geneva. The existence of these translations are illustrative of Reformation theologian's claim to return ad fontes, back to the languages of Scripture itself. By (re)presenting a catechetical summary of Christian doctrine in both Hebrew and Greek, the reformers in Geneva sought to demonstrate that their theology was rooted in the sources of revelation and the 'pure' teachings of the early Church in a manner capable of addressing both learned audiences and hoped-for Jewish or Eastern interlocutors. Alongside Calvin's catechisms are two early Lutheran texts: Johann Bader and Tobias Meyer's sacramental tract (printed in Strasbourg in 1526), and Johannes Bugenhagen's postils (printed at Hagenau, ca.1525). These works reflect both the polemical and pastoral concerns of the early Lutheran movement, on the one hand grappling with the meaning of the Eucharist, and on the other providing sermons for the liturgical year. A close ally of Luther, Bugenhagen sought to stabilize the reformation communities through pragmatic instruction. Bader's text, by contrast, exemplifies the more combative dimension of then current theological controversies. Taken together, these two texts are illustrative of how Reformation figures not only produced works of doctrinal innovation, but also sought new forms of preaching and pastoral practice. Also present is a Cologne edition of two treatises by St. Augustine of Hippo, De bono coniugali and De sancta virginitate. Augustine's authority among the reformers (Lutheran and Calvinist), with John Calvin and his followers in particular invoking him as a guarantor of continuity with the early church. In this sammelband which includes works by both Lutherans and Reform theologians, the presence of these texts demonstrate how Augustine's writings on marriage and virginity provided a moral theology that could be appropriated across these still-porous confessional divisions. By binding Augustine with Calvin, Bugenhagen, and other reformers, the volume exemplifies how early Protestants claimed authority from the Church Fathers, attempting to demonstrate that their reforms did not represent a novelty within the Christian, but rather a recovery of the authentic early Christian church. The assemblage of these particular and diverse works in this volume suggests that they were likely bound together in the mid-16th century. The presence of Calvinist catechisms, Lutheran sermons and polemics, and works by Augustine, indicates that these texts were brought together during a time in which the boundaries between "Lutheran" and "Reformed" identities were still porous, likely before the Lutheran Formula of Concord in 1577 and the Reformed Synod of Dordt in 1618. After these key moments, confessional lines between the two traditions became far sharper. In the period between 1540 and 1570 the Reformation was still a popular evangelical movement with significant overlapping sympathies and theological tendencies, sharing both a robust humanist disposition and a common appeal to the authority of Scripture and the patristic tradition. A collector of these works during this period would likely have seen these as complementary expressions of the same reforming enterprise. The translations of Calvin's catechism into Greek and Hebrew in particular suggest a distinct cosmopolitanism: a theology that could be directed outward to Jews, Eastern Orthodox Christia.…
