Hardcover. Etat : As New. The oldest grammarian of India, whose complete work has come down to us, is Panini, who is also, in many respects, the greatest of all Indian grammarians. His monumental work is entitled Astadhyayi, lit. 'The Eight Chapters'. He has developed a special grammatical language with its own technical terms a…nd indications of each letter, which is termed by a modern scholar as 'metalanguage'. It is to be noted that Panini's Vyakarana, i.e. grammar, does not consist of the Astadhyayi alone. The Vyakarana is called 'pancanga', (lit.) having five limbs, i.e. having, besides Astadhyayi., four supplementary texts, viz. (1) Dhatupathaa register of verbal roots, (2) Ganapathaa list of words, belonging to particular groups; the first word of each group having been mentioned in a particular sutra of the Astadhyayi (3) The Paribhasasformulations of guiding principles, and (4) Linganusasanaa treatise on the science of gender of Sanskrit words. There are many vulgate editions of the works of Panini. It has been found from experience that the edition prepared by C. Sankararama Sastri and published as No. 2 of the Balamanorama series by Balamanorama Press, Madras, in 1937 (2nd ed.) is by far the best one. It not only presents a very accurate text of the Astadhyayi, the Varttikas, the Ganapatha, and the Dhatupatha, but places all die authentic varttikas and ganas below the relevant sutras. Placing the ganas just below the sutras which refer to them with the words such as adi or prabhrti proves to be very useful to the students. The present edition is a reprint of the Balamanorama edition with an elaborate introduction, by Dr. Ratna Basu, of the University of Calcutta, bringing out the greatness of the tradition of grammatical literature in India in general and of the contribution of Panini to the science of the Sanskrit language, in particular. An index of the sutras has been appended to this edition to facilitate ready referencing.

The aim of this work is to draw upon the fullness of the epic poem Madhuravijayam. An attempt to analyse the writings of Gangadevi carefully and systematically shows that these writings are rich in historical accounts of Vijayanagar Empire. There is of course no dearth of research papers or book lets on this epic poem but a single and systematic study of the Madhuravijayam in its literary and historical perspectives has to my knowledge not yet been undertaken. With this in view it has taken up the work a literary study of the Madhuravijayam. Indeed Gangadevi stands out among the poetesses in the field of Sanskrit Literature. A comparative study of classical Indian and Western drama with special reference to comedy reveals interesting similarities and differences between the two in respect of aesthetic theory theatric practice and elements of dramatic compositionThe common ground between Western and Sanskrit theatre relates to…the use of stage-devices like pantomime off-stage voices soliloquy and play within the play as well as histrionic elements like dance and music and the exaggerated costume and make up of the characters But apart from these Indian drama as outlined in Natya Sastra and maintained by stage performances through the centuries is markedly different from the Western because while the latter mostly depends on realistic devices the former is basically a stylized mode of theatre which caters to an idealized audience In Western drama the interest of the audience in watching a play lies in the effective rendering of the dialogue so that the verbal text is of primary value But in traditional Sanskrit dramatic practice the actor is encouraged to resort to an elaborate method of improvisation using vocal and or gestural expression supplemented by the appropriate movements of the face and other parts of the body as well as by musical accompaniment The written text has therefore only a minimal importance hereThe method of dramatic composition of the comedies in both Western and Sanskrit traditions also bears striking similarities and divergences These may be seen in the methods of employing plot situation and themes as well as in the creation of character and the use of language In the present study the comedies of Shakespeare and Bhasa have been selected for closer analysis because they seem to encompass within their respective spheres a wide variety of levels and interpretations of Western and Indian comedy The two dramatists also seem to share a common underlying philosophy of comedy namely a joyous involvement in the process of living 168p.
