Now they must face one that can eliminate all life on Earth in an instant.THE GOD PARTICLE is a super-kinetic thriller that pits brains, religion, political power, and common humanity against the onslaught of extremely dangerous, narrowly focused scientific exploration into the fabric of creation, complete with a plot to shoot down one of the President's helicopters. Fringe religious groups but not the usual suspects engage in terror. Ugly espionage is set against the beauty of the Cote D'Azur. The romance of Paris offsets the grit of Boston's South of Roxbury while the Euro-pop discos of Switzerland punctuate the quest. In the end it comes down to one question: Can former FBI agent Brooke Burrell, now QUOG's lead operative, choose between her personal and professional life in time to solve the puzzle and stop it all.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - In periods of intense crisis the pressing need to take sides comes to the surface and trumps neutrality. The claim to objectivity, always a little problematic, can no longer be sustained, and becomes itself a ground of confrontation as the conflicts amongst economists and constitutional lawyers show. As the world is moving towards a state of permanent crisis the engaged intellectual and the committed media are coming back (Costas Douzinas, Professor of Law and Contributor to The Guardian). This is a crucial collection that provides a new perspective on the social dimension of crisis - exemplified in the new wave of social mobilization gaining ground across the globe. The collection is an invigorating addition to the market of ideas circulating at this time of uncertainty, austerity and social change. It is an important and timely contribution to the study of social movements and the rise of direct civil action in pursuit of democracy. In this milieu of social change, Athens is its muse. This book is one of the first collections of chapters devoted to the specificities of Greece's crisis in English that does not focus solely on economics. Its scope and intention aligns it with other recently published books on the 'Arab Spring' and the 'Occupy' movements, although its register moves away from journalistic commentary to academic considerations of futurity and the potential of the city to reinvent itself. This makes it a unique interdisciplinary project with a broad appeal.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Boone and Crockett Club has brought back to life Frederick Courteney Selous' epic African adventure in a meticulously remastered, high-quality paperback edition. Follow noted adventurer Selous as he spends nine years amongst the game of the far interior of South Africa as a professional hunter beginning in 1871 at the young age of 20. In his preface he notes, ".my pages are naturally chiefly devoted to the ferae naturae amongst which I have been constantly living. Some of my conclusions with regard to lions, rhinoceroses, or other animal, may differ from those arrived at by other men equally competent to give an opinion; but, at all events, they are the result of a long personal experience of the beasts themselves, and have not been influenced in any way by the often unreliable stories of 'old hunters.' I have only to add that in the following pages I have done my best to express myself in plain, intelligible English; and if I have not succeeded in this respect as well as I could wish, I trust that my shortcomings will be leniently judged when it is remembered that the last nine years of my life have been passed amongst savages, during which time I have not undergone the best training for a literary effort." Selous delivers with a very entertaining and informative manuscript that will delight hunters, adventurers, and sportsmen of today. "A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa" is a part of the B&C Classics series launched in 2012 by the Boone and Crockett Club. Each book in the series was authored by a member of B&C in the late 1800s or early 1900s and was hand-selected by a committee of vintage hunting literature experts. Readers will be taken back to a time when hunting trips didn't happen over a weekend, but were adventures spanning weeks, months, even years.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Theodore Roosevelt's African Game Trails is the second book in Boone and Crockett Club's new series of digitally remastered classics. Relive Roosvelt's account of his African wanderings as an American hunter-naturalist. This edition includes over 100 refined photographs, drawings, and maps from the original publication as well as bonus images not found in other editions. This superb volume is a classic among books of adventure. It shows the author not only as a mighty hunter, but as a profound student of natural history, a close observer of both plant and animal life, and a master of graphic and picturesque narrative. With his usual thoroughness he has added appendices from the naturalists' note-books, and in general this volume in its permanent shape is the most important contribution to the literature of hunting, adventure, and scientific nature-study in Africa that has been produced. Mr. Roosevelt had in mind this great expedition for several years before its public announcement. With his accustomed foresight, as it began to take shape as a probability, he consulted all the leading authorities, not only through their books, but by personal interviews. Eminent African hunters, such as F.C. Selous and Sir Harry Johnston, were invited to the White House and gave him the benefit of their wide experience. Mr. Roosevelt and his son Kermit, who was the official photographer of the expedition, left New York on March 23d, 1909, and reached Cairo one year later. During that time they had traversed Africa from Mombasa on the Indian Ocean to the Nyanza Lakes, and from Albert Nyanza down the White Nile, and the Nile to Khartoum and to Cairo. They secured superb specimens of all the big game of Africa. Many of which can be found at the Smithsonian Institution still to this day. Mr. Roosevelt's object was not that of a mere sportsman to accumulate personal souvenirs of his hunting skill. He planned a serious scientific expedition to collect for the Smithsonian Institution at Washington as complete a representation as possible of the large and small game of Africa. Skilled naturalists were engaged to accompany the expedition and every arrangement made for the preservation and shipment of the trophies of the hunt. The descriptions of the African landscape, the great African plains in comparison with the bad lands of Wyoming, the solitary rides which he took across the veldt and his wise observations on the animal life, the life of the natives, and the thrill and adventure embodied in his account of tracking with enthusiasm and persistency the greatest game in the worldthe elephant, lion, rhino, hippo, buffalo, the giant eland, and the many varieties of antelopeall these make this the greatest book of adventure, of hunting experiences and scientific observation of nature combined, that has been written about Africa.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - For most of the eighteenth century the best minds in Europe took up the task of providing a foundation for human life and human society in which individual fulfillment was to be achieved within a rational public order. When it became apparent that this task was based on an illusionthe separation of self and worldand was thus doomed to failure, however, that insight and the consequent crisis were forgotten and repressed. After 1815 all parties, reactionary and liberal, chose to proceed as if we had achieved what we knew, somewhere, we could not carry off. To secure that false confidence the challenges of the late Enlightenment had to be silenced and its doubts swept under the carpet. This book concerns a founding act of bad faith and of willed blindness, the self-forgetting of the rootlessness and the falsity of the basic presuppositions of the modern world, that have haunted that world from its birth. Enlightenment Interrupted takes the metaphysical arguments of the idealists seriously. Its methodological foundation is the belief that in every era there are deep structures of thought and experience that define the range of theoretical and political possibilities available. The great achievement of the post-Kantian generation was to critique and ultimately to move beyond the self-world dichotomy at the heart of Western thought. This can be seen as a continuation of the Enlightenment project of subjecting everything to the test of reason, but it was also part of a larger cultural movement that found expression in Romanticism, in an openness to Indian and other non-Western thought, and in the political and social experimentation of the French Revolution. What followed in the post-Revolutionary years was not a development of those tendencies to openness and egalitarian, common process but a retreat to the opposition of self and world and a drastic reduction in intellectual and social possibilities. This is one source of the collective impotence that sees the twenty-first century in a lockstep march to disaster.…
