Spellmount Publishing, Staplehurst. 2005 First edition ISBN 1862272840 228pp Illustrated Hardback. Yorkshire born, Leo Cooper was educated at Radley and by National Service in Keny…a, before returning to London to join the publishing firm of Longmans. He later worked for Andre Deutsch and Hamish Hamilton, who both decided that he was unemployable, a decision with which he thoroughly concurred. They both sacked him. There was only one thing to do and that was 'if you can't join them, beat them' and this is what Leo did, aided and abetted by business partner, Tom Hartman, who played Sancho Panzer (sic) to his Don Quixote - the imprint immediately attracted numbers of distinguished authors. Many others followed. The imprint was responsible for publishing some of the most important military books of the twentieth century not least of which the Famous Regiments Series of which General Sir Brian Horrocks was the series editor. This book is an account of Leo's heroic efforts to keep a publishing company afloat whilst being permanently short of capital and experience. For anyone contemplating setting up, or working in, a publishing company, or for the general reader, this book is indispensable reading, blending tragedy and comedy in generous but unequal measures. This book in is FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper.

This is the story of a young Royal Artillery officer, Lieutenant Ronald Williams, who was held as a prisoner of war in the Japanese-occupied Dutch East Indies from 1942 - 1945. It is a true account of the alternate horror and banality of daily life, and the humor that helped the men survive the beatings, deprivation, and death of comrades. Told through the diary and papers of Williams and others, Jungle Journal includes many cartoons and poems produced by the prisoners, as well as extracts from the original Jungle Journal, a newspaper created by the men under the noses of their guards. Ronald Williams was the "editor" of this potentially fatal "publication." Jungle Journal describes the survival of hope even in desperate straits, and is a testament to those men whose courage and fortitude were tested to the limit under the tropical sun. Ref U5.

Even in the…se days of highly mechanised warfare, marching on foot remains an essential part of every good soldier's training. Cromwell, Marlborough, Frederick the Great and Wellington all knew that the parade ground drill, and the precision marching that goes with it, means that large numbers of troops can be swiftly and decisively deployed on the field of battle. Victories are won by disciplined troops, properly positioned and aligned, ready to confront and defeat their enemies. Here is a book that offers a remarkable new insight into the art of war, and helps the general reader to understand more clearly just what it takes to turn recruits into soldiers, and soldiers into heroes. From the drama of D-Day to the grim push into Germany and on to Berlin, this study details the final efforts of the British infantry to free Europe from the grip of the Nazi army. The contribution of the British forces is sometimes downplayed, the common misconception being that it was after all the Russian winter and Americans that won the War. Charles Whiting a veteran who served in the final years of the war adjusts this perspective to emphasize the role of the British troops. Ref LL3.

Adrian Holloway was only seventeen when he left the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth in 1940 and joined HMS Valiant as a Midshipman, sharing a gunroom with Midshipmen Terry Lewin and HRH Prince Philip. He arrived in the Mediterranean in time to witness the darkest days of the Mediterranean Fleet - providing cover for the Fleet Air Arm's raid on Taranto, fighting at the Battle of Matapan and taking part in the evacuation of Crete - during which time the Royal Navy's vessels were decimated. He also witnessed the sinking of HMS Barham, and after returning from an appointment to the Australian destroyer HMAS Nizam, was back on board Valiant when Italian frogmen mined her in Alexandria Harbour in 1941. In From Dartmouth to War Adrian Holloway presents a fascinating first-hand account of the war at sea, vividly recalling what it was like to be in battle whilst still little more than a schoolboy. He describes the transition from the safety of Dartmouth to the terror and confusion of the open ocean, at a time when Britain stood alone against the Axis. Complete with personal photographs, track charts and naval signals, this book provides an invaluable insight into the wartime activities of a junior officer. Ref III 6.

The… unclipped dust wrapper is also in mint condition and has now been covered with clear, removable protective film. Ian Fletcher has a gift for relating the personal experiences of the protagonists with the military and strategic situations as the campaign developed. The story is unashamedly told from the British point of view, and makes the case that Waterloo was an Allied victory, at the core of which was Wellington's refusal to be intimidated by Napoleon's reputation, and the fighting ethos of the British army. The mauling at Quatre Bras and Ligny receive due attention. The illustrations are particularly good, contempory paintings and Victorian reconstructions are reinforced by well chosen photos of the battlefields as they are now. Authoritive and well written, it is a salute to the grit, professionalism, and bloodymindedness of Wellington and the army that had to live up to the reputation won in the Peninsula. ref DD1.

Charles Waite Spellmount Publishing, Stroud. 2012 First Edition ISBN 9780752465197 224pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in mint unread condition in a mint unclipped dust wrapperNothing prepares a man… for war and Private Charles Waite, of the 2/7th Queen's Royal Regiment, was certainly ill-prepared when his convoy carrying supplies of petrol and ammunition on its way to Dunkirk took a wrong turning near Abbeville. They met half a dozen German tanks on the road and saw hundreds of German soldiers marching across fields towards them. 'The day I was captured, I had a rifle but no ammunition.' Charles lost his freedom that day in May 1940 and didn't regain it until May 1945 when he was finally picked up by the Americans, having walked 1600km from his prison camp attached to Stalag 20B in East Prussia. 'When I got back I couldn't tell anybody about what had happened during my years as a POW. I was ashamed. I hadn't won any medals; I had no stories of brave deeds. How could I be proud of breaking rocks for 12 hours day or pulling cabbages out of frozen ground at gunpoint? Would they have wanted to hear about the wounded soldiers dying in my arms, of the acts of cruelty I witnessed, and the terrible hunger and fatigue suffered on the Long March? Everybody wanted to forget the war and get on with rebuilding their lives.' Silent for 70 years, for the first time he has put his story on paper. He describes his first march from Abbeville to Trier and journey by cattle truck across Germany to the east; working in a stone quarry and years of farm labour; his period in solitary confinement for sabotage; and the Long March home in the one of the worst winters on record. His story is also about friendship, of physical and mental resilience, and of compassion for everyone who suffered. 'My book is for all who lie in foreign fields. Those in shallow graves, the men we couldn't take with us. It's for those left behind'. Ref BB4.
