Neuware -This monograph is a revised set of notes on recent applications of the theory of cones, arising from lectures I gave during my stay at the Centre de recherches mathematiques in Montreal. It consists of three chapters. The first describes the basic theory. The second is devoted to applications to mathematical programming and the third to matrix theory. The second and third chapters are independent. Natural links between them, such as mathematical programming over matrix cones, are only mentioned in passing. The choice of applications described in this paper is a reflection of my p«r9onal interests, for examples, the complementarity problem and iterative methods for singular systems. The paper definitely does not contain all the applications which fit its title. The same remark holds for the list of references. Proofs are omitted or sketched briefly unless they are very simple. However, I have tried to include proofs of results which are not widely available, e.g. results in preprints or reports, and proofs, based on the theory of cones, of classical theorems. This monograph benefited from helpful discussions with professors Abrams, Barker, Cottle, Fan, Plemmons, Schneider, Taussky and Varga.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 108 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -If one takes the intuitive point of view that a system is a black box whose inputs and outputs are time functions or time series it is natural to adopt an operator theoretic approach to the stUdy of such systems. Here the black box is modeled by an operator which maps an input time function into an output time function. Such an approach yields a unification of the continuous (time function) and discrete (time series) theories and simultaneously allows one to formulate a single theory which is valid for time-variable distributed and nonlinear systems. Surprisingly, however, the great potential for such an approach has only recently been realized. Early attempts to apply classical operator theory typically having failed when optimal controllers proved to be non-causal, feedback systems unstable or coupling networks non-lossless. Moreover, attempts to circumvent these difficulties by adding causality or stability constraints to the problems failed when it was realized that these time based concepts were undefined and; in fact, undefinable; in the Hilbert and Banach spaces of classical operator theory. 284 pp. Englisch.

The early embryonic growth processes are located around the developing sense organs, among which the nose holds a key position. The first indication of the development of the nose is the formation of the placodes, oval areas of thick ened and condensed ectoderm, one on each side of the head. Each of these placodes is transformed, via the nasal groove, into the nasal tube, sometimes indicated as primitive nasal cavity. In the literature this transformation has been described as an isolated process that changes the superficial facial region. Some authors, including Wolgensinger (1950), think that the active component of this trans formation primarily is the ectoderm of the nasal placode. Others, i. e. Hochstetter (1891), Kallius (1905) and Vermeij-Keers (1967), assume this component be located in the mesenchyme. Peter (1913, 1949), Patten (1953, 1961), Warbrick (1960), and Andersen and Matthiessen (1967) hold both these components to be active. In the first and last of these three concepts the ectoderm of the nasal placode and the nasal groove respectively, is thought to invade the mesenchyme in the posterior direction. Invading ectoderm has also been considered to form - independent of the transformation - the organ of Jacobson and the naso lacrimal duct and to separate the conchae (e. g. Born, 1876; Legal, 1883; Kallius, 1905; Peter, 1913, 1949; Streeter, 1948; Andersen and Matthiessen, 1967). 32 pp. Englisch.
