Mitteleuropaer kommen in fast alle Ecken der Welt. Seit einiger Zeit nimmt daher auch das Interesse an Lebensmitteln zu, die fern unserem Lande eine Rolle spielen. Man geht etwa chinesisch oder indonesisch essen, und in unseren Supermarkten trifft man zunehmend fremde Lebensmittel, vor allem Obst. Vor nur 100 Jahren war das noch ganz anders. Tomaten und Blumen kohl etwa spielten keine Rolle. Mit Orangen, Grapefruits und Bananen war es ebenso. Wer kannte damals schon Ananas 1930 lag die Weltpro duktion an Ananas erst bei etwa 300000 t, jetzt sind es iiber 5 Millionen! Als Tee trinkt man heute in Europa fast ausschlieBlich schwarzen Tee. Dabei kam dieser (ca. 40 kg) erstmals 1839 nach Europa (London). Inner halb weniger Jahrzehnte verdrangte er den damals bekannten griinen Tee in unserem Erdteil fast vollstandig. Erst heute beginnt man sich gelegent lich zuriickzubesinnen und kann wieder griinen Tee kaufen. Schmokert man in einem 100Jahre alten Lebensmittelbuch, z.B. in E. Smith: Foods (1873), so rant der Unterschied zwischen damals und heu te auf. So werden in dem Buch auf Tomaten ('man kann sie gekocht als Gemiise verzehren oder zu Sofie verarbeiten') ganze zwei Zeilen verwen det, auf Brennessel hingegen acht. Yom Blumenkohl ist gerade das Wort erwahnt. Metallkunde oder EisenhUttenwesen nicht streng unterschieden. Erst in der spateren Entwicklung vor allem in diesem Jahrhundert machte sich eine zunehmende Spezialisierung bemerkbar, und zwar sowohl in der Praxis der Fertigung als auch im Bereich der Aus bildung und Lehre. Fast alle Bereiche der Umformtechnik sind aber eng mit Werkstofffragen ver knUpft. Werkstoffeigenschaften bestimmen neben der Geometrie und dem speziel len Umformverfahren das Umformverhalten des Werkstoffes einschlieBlich der moglichen Verfahrensgrenzen sowie die Gebrauchseigenschaften des fertig um geformten WerkstUckes. Zum Verstandnis eines Umformvorganges und der resul tierenden WerkstUckeigenschaften sind grUndliche Kenntnisse des Werkstoff verhaltens unerlaBlich. 1m Rahmen der Umformtechnik kann aber die Werkstoff kunde nur als eines von mehreren Teilgebieten betrachtet und nur in verkUrz ter Form in die Lehre an den Hochschulen einbezogen werden. Der Fortschritt der Werkstoffwissenschaften seit der Entwicklung der Versetzungstheorie in den DreiBiger Jahren ist fUr den einzelnen Umformtechniker unUberschaubar geworden. Der 1. Ecologists who study environments and biotic communities in which protozoa are im ponant should find this book especially useful. During the last decade it has become clear that protozoa play important roles in natural eco systems, but few ecologists have a feeling for the functional properties and the diversity of these organisms. Protozoa pose or exemplify many general problems of population and community ecology, and of evo lutionary biology. In most respects the general ecological propenies of protozoa are not fundamentally different from those of larger organisms; yet, due to their small size, short generation times, and ubiquitous oc currence they often present ecological phenomena in a new and dif ferent light. To this should be added that protozoa are well-suited for experimental work. Despite these advantages, the study of protozoa has played a relatively modest role in the development of ecology and ev olutionary biology, primarily, I believe, because most ecologists are unfamiliar with these organisms. I hope this book will attract more attention to these favorable characteristics of protozoa. I also hope that this book may make protozoologists aware of new aspects of their pet organisms. For a long time (that is, until the fun damental distinction between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells was rec ognized) protozoa were believed to represent the simplest form of life.
