The first chapter outlines book results and examples of applicability. Then a quick introduction to geometric methods in control theory is provided. The following chapters contain a deep analysis of single input systems on 2-D manifolds including classifications of optimal syntheses and feedbacks, their singularities, extremals projection and minimum time singularities. Various extensions and applications are also illustrated. The volume is suitable for a graduate level one-semester course on optimal syntheses theory for mathematicians or engineers with a solid mathematical background.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 280 pp. Englisch.

The subjects in the course have varied over time but a common theme has been the study of economies over time and under uncertainty in the form of incomplete markets and the overlapping generations model. When I took up a position at Lund University in 1996 Mich Tvede took over responsibility for the course and together we developed a large part of the material, which formed the basis for the present book. He has generously allowed me to use all of our common material. There is a considerable overlap between general equilibrium theory with incomplete markets (GEI), finance and macroeconomic theory, which sterns from the considerations of time and uncertainty, as can be seen from the splendid textbooks by LeRoy and Werner [2001], Pliska [1997] and the seminal work on GEI by Magill and Quinzee [1996], in partic ular its 'Historical Remarks' which off er a brilliant history of modern economic theory. The exposition here airns at making some of the results of GEI and on overlapping generations (OG) economies readily available to areader acquainted with economic theory at an upper undergraduate level.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 420 pp. Englisch.

These activities are recognized as quite successful in building sustainable financial institutions that serve the small end of the market, with special emphasis on microenterprise and small business. The KfW-managed projects have contributed to the overall stability of financial sectors and to economic recovery and growth through employment creation and investment. This book reviews experience gained and analyses the reasons for the successes achieved, options for further improvement, and scope for replicability in other transition and developing economies. A particularly interesting feature is that relatively small amounts of public funds can catalyse financial markets in volatile environments.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

Concepts are mathematized using Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), while an approach to the formalization of judgements and conclusions is conceptual graphs, based on Peirce's existential graphs. Combining FCA and a mathematization of conceptual graphs yields so-called concept graphs, which offer a formal and diagrammatic theory of elementary logic.Expressing negation in contextual logic is a difficult task. Based on the author's dissertation, this book shows how negation on the level of judgements can be implemented. To do so, cuts (syntactical devices used to express negation) are added to concept graphs. As we can express relations between objects, conjunction and negation in judgements, and existential quantification, the author demonstrates that concept graphs with cuts have the expressive power of first-order predicate logic. While doing so, the author distinguishes between syntax and semantics, and provides a sound and complete calculus for concept graphs with cuts. The author's treatment is mathematically thorough and consistent, and the book gives the necessary background on existential and conceptual graphs.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

The aim of the meeting, organized by the Board of UNU/IIST, was twofold. First, the institute¿s research work should be re-assessed and diss- inated. Second, the future role of UNU/IIST¿s research area, formal methods, should be discussed. Role of Formal Methods. Over at least three decades of development, the c- ception of what role formal methods should play in software engineering seems to have changed dramatically, in uenced by both advocates and detractors. - ginning with a fundamentalist view that contested the genuineness of any ¿n- formal¿ practice, dismissing it as an inappropriate contribution to the as yet ill-de ned corpus of so-called software engineering, the conception of what this role should be has apparently evolved to a less naive engineering viewpoint. - day, as these theoretical methods acquire a new maturity and breadth of use, many of their advocates appear to be questioning their direct application by software practitioners, often considering it to be nonmandatory, and sometimes even nonadvisable. It appears that, together with the said maturation of the theoretical results and constructions, the perspective of their role within a far more complex picture of the software development activity has also matured. 476 pp. Englisch.

This is a counterpart of convex optimization in the setting of discrete optimization. The theory developed is applied to the control of stochastic discrete-event dynamic systems. Some applications are admission, routing, service allocation and vacation control in queuing networks. They range from new options for infertility treatment and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to stem-cell-based therapies for debilitating diseases. Since all these approaches involve the manipulation of human gametes, embryos or embryonic cells, and could also permit more contentious uses, they have stimulated a controversial debate as to what aims are desirable and to what extent experiments on human embryos are morally permissible, if permissible at all. The situation is further complicated by the fact that scientific projects are increasingly realized through international co-operation and that patients are increasingly ready to seek morally contentious medical treatment wherever it is available and thus to bypass national legislation. In view of this situation the Europäische Akademie assembled a temporary interdisciplinary project group in which scientists from universities and non-university research organizations in Europe working on the relevant subjects were brought together and charged with establishing a knowledge base and providing suggestions for long-term solutions that would be acceptable for society. Presented here are the results of this project, ranging from a discussion of the theoretical and practical possibilities in human-embryo experimentation and its alternatives in research on adult stem cells, a comparison of the situations and prospects of regulation of embryo research in Europe, a survey of European public attitudes, and a philosophical analysis of the arguments and argumentative strategies used in the debate.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 448 pp. Englisch.

Options and derivatives are tools to control risk ex posure, and used in the strategies of investors speculating in markets like fixed-income, stocks, currencies, commodities and energy. A combination of mathematical and economical reasoning is used to find the price of a derivatives contract. This book gives an introduction to the theory of mathematical finance, which is the modern approach to analyse options and derivatives. Roughly speaking, we can divide mathematical fi nance into three main directions. In stochastic finance the purpose is to use economic theory with stochastic analysis to derive fair prices for options and derivatives. The results are based on stochastic modelling of financial as sets, which is the field of empirical finance. Numerical approaches for finding prices of options are studied in computational finance. All three directions are presented in this book. Algorithms and code for Visual Basic functions are included in the numerical chapter to inspire the reader to test out the theory in practice. The objective of the book is not to give a complete account of option theory, but rather relax the mathematical rigour to focus on the ideas and techniques.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 180 pp. Englisch.

Connes wanted to associate homological invariants to K-homology classes and to describe the index pair ing with K-theory in that way, while Tsygan was motivated by algebraic K-theory and Lie algebra cohomology. At the same time Karoubi had done work on characteristic classes that led him to study related structures, without however arriving at cyclic homology properly speaking. Many of the principal properties of cyclic homology were already developed in the fundamental article of Connes and in the long paper by Feigin-Tsygan. In the sequel, cyclic homology was recognized quickly by many specialists as a new intriguing structure in homological algebra, with unusual features. In a first phase it was tried to treat this structure as well as possible within the traditional framework of homological algebra. The cyclic homology groups were computed in many examples and new important properties such as prod uct structures, excision for H-unital ideals, or connections with cyclic objects and simplicial topology, were established. An excellent account of the state of the theory after that phase is given in the book of Loday.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 156 pp. Englisch.

In this book, his scientific understanding is apparent - for example in his comprehensive but readily understandable descrip tions of waste conditioning and disposal. Moreover, he has also been directly involved in the wider societal and political debates in the nuclear area - especially in his Italian homeland. What shines through in these pages is.his frustration at the lack of progress in im plementing disposal concepts that are judged by many to be very safe and his unfaltering drive to improve this situation. To provoke debate, the book is very deliberately written in a po larising, black and white style that can easily be labelled as 'politi cally incorrect' - a characterisation that Piero will probably agree with and be amused by. Criticism is directed equally at 'loud mouthed and incompetent anti-nuclear environmentalists', the 'nu clear Byzantium' of the international nuclear establishment, the 'in tellectual narcissism' of those nuclear experts that dare to admit the importance of societal issues, and the tendency of politicians to 'in definite procrastination'. These are not words chosen to avoid open confrontation of opposing views.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 148 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -There is significant current interest in new technologies for IC (Integrated Circuit) cooling, driven by the rapid increase in power densities in ICs and the trend towards high-density electronic packaging for applications throughout civilian and military markets. In accordance with Moore's Law, the number of transistors on 6 Intel Pentium microprocessors has increased from 7.5 x10 in 1997 (Pentium II) to 6 55 x10 in 2002 (Pentium 4). Considering the rapid increase in the integration density, thermal management must be well designed to ensure proper functionality of these high-speed, high-power chips. Forced air convection has been traditionally used to remove the heat through a finned heat sink and fan module. 2 Currently, with 82 W power dissipation rate, approximately 62 W/cm heat flux, from a Pentium 4 processor with 3.06 GHz core frequency, the noise generated from high rotating speed fans is approaching the limit of acceptable level for humans. However, the power dissipation from a single cost-performance chip is 2 expected to exceed 100 W/cm by the year 2005, when the air cooling has to be replaced by new cooling technologies. Among alternative cooling methods, the two-phase microchannel heat sink is one of the most promising solutions. Understanding the boiling process and the two-phase flow behavior in microchannels is the key to successful implementation of such a device.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 156 pp. Englisch.

There are seventeen articles and each article is written in a pedagogical manner dealing with relevant research issues and questions. The intended audience is post-doctoral scientists, academicians and graduate students intending to pursue research and it is our hope that this volume will have lasting value. Several issues arise within the general eld of interfacial transport such as the instability of interfacial processes and driven ows. Instabilities occur when there is a sudden change in the structure of a solution as a control parameter is smoothly varied. They are usually accompanied by a change in the patterns in uid ow or temperature and concentration elds. Transport phenomena related instabilityattheinterfacehasmuchofitsoriginintheseminalworksofRayleigh whointhelaterpartofthe19thcenturyworkedonjets,gravitationallyunstably strati ed uid layers, and on the rst ideas on convection. Some of these ideas were subsequently modi ed by the work of Marangoni, Block and Pearson on surface tension driven instabilities. Over the years similar concepts have found place in solidi cation and melting, electrodeposition, and other phase change problems.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 388 pp. Englisch.

Inverse problems are encountered in such diverse areas of application as medical imaging, remote sensing, material testing, geosciences and financing. It has become evident that new ideas coming from differential geometry and modern analysis are needed to tackle even some of the most classical inverse problems. This book contains a collection of presentations, written by leading specialists, aiming to give the reader up-to-date tools for understanding the current developments in the field.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 400 pp. Englisch.

The intention is to serve as a textbook for graduate students in aqueous, environmental and groundwater geochemistry, despite the fact that its focus is on the special topic of geochemistry in hydrothermal systems, it also provides new insights for experienced researchers with respect to the topic of reactive transport. The overall purpose is to give the reader an understanding of the processes that control the chemical composition of waters in hydrothermal systems and to highlight the interfaces between chemistry, geothermics and hydrogeology. From the reviews:'.is a nice, compact introduction to the principles of modeling coupled fluid flow and fluid-mineral reactions in active geothermal systems, as used for heating and electricity generation.' Neuware -Computational mechanics, as a science employed for the numerical model ing of processes in nature and engineering, has over the last few decades developed two strands. The first concerns the putting of more and more powerful software packages into computational practice, using increas ingly high-performance computers with increasingly large memory. The traditional finite element and finite difference approaches are still preva lent. Over the years however, researchers have met with new problems; their solutions on the basis of traditional methods are at best difficult and at worst impossible to obtain. Such problems provided a powerful impetus in the development of the second strand, resulting in the development of es sentially new approaches for numerical modeling, for example meshless methods, 'molecular' dynamics, neuron networks. The current state of the art formed the basis of many papers presented at the Fifth World Congress on Computational Mechanics, Vienna 2002. It is within the framework of the second strand that this book has been written.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 372 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Our objective was primarily to consider in a separate treatise from the general point of view a theory of as many electrodynamic phenomena in a magnetic field as possible. The choice of material was determined by both the ab sence of such a book and the scientific interests of the authors. From the very beginning, however, we felt it necessary to include the fundamentals of electrodynamics that are required for the thorough analysis of particular processes. We believe that it is convenient for a reader to find in the same book a consistent review of some special fields in physics and a complete set of theoretical instruments that are necessary for the clear understanding of more advanced parts of the book. There exists a number of excellent textbooks and monographs describing the problems of classical electrodynamics in general and its applications to continuous media. We have to acknowledge, for example, the following funda mental books: Electrodynamics by A. Sommerfeld [1], The Classical Theory of Fields by L.D. Landau and E.M. Lifshitz [2], Electromagnetic Theory by J.A. Stratton [3], and Electrodynamics of Continuous Media by L.D. Lan dau and E.M. Lifshitz [4]. This list is certainly not exhaustive. However, to our knowledge, a book specifically covering the theory of electrodynamic phenomena in a magnetic field has not yet been written.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 444 pp. Englisch.
