A magnitude Mw 9.1 earthquake (third strongest ever instrumentally recorded) generated a global tsunami that killed about… 230,000 people along the coasts of 14 countries in the Indian Ocean and propagated as far as the North Pacific and North Atlantic.Since then, various countries from around the globe contributed major funding to tsunami research and mitigation, enabling the installation of hundreds of new high-precision instruments, the development of new technology and the establishment of more modern communication systems. As a result, incredible progress has been achieved in tsunami research and operation during the ten years after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.The papers presented in this first of two special volumes of Pure and Applied Geophysics reflect the state of tsunami science during this time. Eight papers are related to casestudies highlighting regional hazards around the globe, while five papers record progress in tsunami warning systems. Benchmark studies that describe the accuracy of numerical models for tsunami impact, as well as a variety of inundation and generation studies, are presented by 7 additional papers.

The reasons cited for this include concern about the adverse effects of opioids and also insufficient adjustment of therapy to the patient's needs. Non-opioi…d anal gesics are the staple drugs for mild to moderate pain and are generally better tolerated than opioid drugs. Differences exist, however, among the non-opioid analgesics which affect the choice of drug for individual pa tients and specific acutely painful conditions. In an associated symposium of the 7th International Symposium: The Pain Clinic, held in Istanbul, Turkey, the ways were discussed in which treatment with non-opioid analgesics can be tailored to meet the needs of individual patients with acute pain. The highlights of this Hoechst sympo sium, emphasize the distinctions between the non-steroidal anti-inflamma tory drugs, and the non-acidic antipyretic analgesics, particularly dipyrone. 9 Mechanisms of action of non-opioid analgesics Professor F. C. Tulunay, M.D. Ankara, Turkey The non-opioid analgesics are among the oldest class of synthetic drugs still in widespread clinical use. They can be divided into the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as acetylsalicylic acid, and the non-acidic, antipyretic analgesics, paracetamol and dipyrone. The pharma cology of these various agents will be reviewed briefly.

Main topics: - vector spaces and algebras, dimension, linear maps, direct sums, and (briefly) exact sequences - matrices and their connections with linear maps, determinants (properties proved using some elementary group theory), and linear equations - Cayley-Hamilton and Jordan theorems leading to the spectrum of a linear map - this provides a geometric-type description of these maps - Hermitian and inner product spaces introducing some metric properties (distance, perpendicularity etc.) into the theory, also unitary and orthogonal maps and matrices - applications to finite fields, mathematical coding theory, finite matrix groups, the geometry of quadratic forms, quaternions and Cayley numbers, and some basic group representation theory A large number of examples, exercises and problems are provided. Answers and/or sketch solutions to all of the problems are given in an appendix. Some of these are theoretical and some numerical, both types are important. No particular computer algebra package is discussed but a number of the exercises are intended to be solved using one of these packages chosen by the reader.The approach is pure-mathematical, and the intended readership is undergraduate mathematicians, also anyone who requires a more than basic understanding of the subject.
