Neuware -The first course in statistics, no matter how 'good' or 'long' it is, typically covers inferential procedures which are valid only if a number of preconditions are satisfied by the data. For example, students are taught about regression pro…cedures valid only if the true residuals are independent, homoscedastic, and normally distributed. But they do not learn how to check for indepen dence, homoscedasticity, or normality, and certainly do not learn how to adjust their data and/or model so that these assumptions are met. To help this student out! I designed a second course, containing a collec tion of statistical diagnostics and prescriptions necessary for the applied statistician so that he can deal with the realities of inference from data, and not merely with the kind of classroom problems where all the data satisfy the assumptions associated with the technique to be taught. There are virtually no prere quisites, although a familiarity with notions encountered in a beginning course in abstract algebra… such as groups, rings, and fields will be useful in providing some motivation for the topics in Part III. An attempt has been made to develop the beginning of each part slowly and then to gradually quicken the pace and the complexity of the material. Each part ends with a brief introduction to selected topics of current interest. The text is divided into three parts: one dealing with set theory, another with computable function theory, and the last with model theory. Part III relies heavily on the notation, concepts and results discussed in Part I and to some extent on Part II. Parts I and II are independent of each other, and each provides enough material for a one semester course. The exercises cover a wide range of difficulty with an emphasis on more routine problems in the earlier sections of each part in order to familiarize the reader with the new notions and methods. The more difficult exercises are accompanied by hints. In some cases significant theorems are devel oped step by step with hints in the problems. What can be more pleasant than to recall one's student days My own go back to 1912 when, in Kharkov, I often heard Markov bei…ng described as 'Neistovyi Andrei.' This description is difficult to translate. Perhaps 'Andrew the irrepressible,' with the addition 'who does not pull any punches.' Two of the charac teristic performances of Markov are briefly described by the editor Ondar. One is Markov's fight 'against reaction, backwardness and religion.' The other is Markov's renunciation of 'all honors and decorations he had received from the tsarist government,' this in protest against the exclu sion from the Academy of A. M. Gorky, the revered writer. Now I wish to add a third item. In the tsarist regime, membership in the Imperial Academy was occa sionally conferred on high noblemen. Neistovyi Andrei did not like this and, to manifest his disapproval, composed a limerick. It was about a Duke Dundook becoming a member of the Academy, a limerick not suited for the ears of ladies! It is not likely that Markov's limerick was ever pub lished. It circulated by word of mouth. The little book edited by Ondar is very attractive. Particularly emphasized is their use for the solution of optimal control pro…blems for ordinary differential equations. These methods were instrumented in a library of programs for an interactive system (DISO) at the Computing Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which can be used to solve a given complicated problem by a combination of appropriate methods in the interactive mode. Neuware -Of recent coinage, the term 'nondifferentiable optimization' (NDO) covers a spectrum of problems related to finding extremal values of nondifferentiable functions. Problems of minimizing nonsmooth functions arise in engineering applications… as well as in mathematics proper. The Chebyshev approximation problem is an ample illustration of this. Without loss of generality, we shall consider only minimization problems. Among nonsmooth minimization problems, minimax problems and convex problems have been studied extensively ([31], [36], [57], [110], [120]). Interest in NDO has been constantly growing in recent years (monographs: [30], [81], [127] and articles and papers: [14], [20], [87]-[89], [98], [130], [135], [140]-[142], [152], [153], [160], all dealing with various aspects of non smooth optimization). For solving an arbitrary minimization problem, it is neces sary to: 1. Study properties of the objective function, in particular, its differentiability and directional differentiability. 2. Establish necessary (and, if possible, sufficient) condi tions for a global or local minimum. 3. Find the direction of descent (steepest or, simply, feasible--in appropriate sense). 4. Construct methods of successive approximation. In this book, the minimization problems for nonsmooth func tions of a finite number of variables are considered.
