The book begins with a short review of a few topics that should be familiar to the student from a general physic…s course. These examples will be used throughout the rest of the book to provide physical con texts for introducing the mathematical applications. The next two chapters are devoted to making the student familiar with vector operations in algebra and cal culus. Students will have already become acquainted with vectors in the general physics course. The notion of magnetic flux provides a physical connection with the integral theorems of vector calculus. A very short chapter on complex num bers is sufficient to supply the needed background for the minor role played by complex numbers in the remainder of the text. Mathematical applications in in termediate and advanced undergraduate courses in physics are often in the form of ordinary or partial differential equations. Ordinary differential equations are introduced in Chapter 5. The ubiquitous simple harmonic oscillator is used to il lustrate the series method of solving an ordinary, linear, second-order differential equation. The one-dimensional, time-dependent SchrOdinger equation provides an illus tration for solving a partial differential equation by the method of separation of variables in Chapter 6.

Control of many crucial marine processes no longer resides within the sea. The evidence for this is abundant and, to anyone who is looking, unmis takable. In recent decades scientists have witnessed unprecedented pertur bations and increases in previously uncommon events that demonstrate growing terrestrial influences on the sea. Numerous marine species, from sea urchins to monk seals, have experienced devastating epidemics. The number of harmful algal blooms and jellyfishpopulation explosions is rising An hypoxic 'dead zone' in the Gulf of Mexico off the mouth of the Mississippi Rivernow appears each year and grows to encompass an area as large as NewJersey. Live coral cover in shallow reefs in Florida,Jamaica, the Maldives and many other locations has severely declined. Deepwater reef building corals, once widely distributed, have disappeared throughout much of their ranges. Researchers have discovered high concentrations of persis tent organic pollutants in declining populations of beluga whales and polar bears, both high trophic level predators in marine food webs.

The size of the meeting and the language differences somewhat limited the real discussion, but, due to the excellence of the different discussion leaders, each of these sessions was very interesting and productive. Celestial Mechanics and Astrometry are both small fields within the general subject of Astronomy. There is also an overlap and relationship between these fields and Astrodynamics. The amount of interaction depends on the interest and efforts of individual scientists.

Few organizations today can a ord the resources and time to replicate market-tested capabilities. Yet, the promise of COTS products is too often not realized in practice. There have been more failures than successes in using COTS software products. The research and software practitioner communities have been working with COTS-based software systems for a number of years. There is now su cient documented experience in the community to collect, analyze, and disseminate success stories, common failings, lessons-learned, and research advances. The mounting experience shows that the e ective use of COTS software products in major software systems demands new skills, knowledge, and abilities, changed roles and responsibilities, and di erent techniques and processes.
