Whereas ECCAI organizes two-week ACAI courses on different topics every second year, AgentLink s European Agent Systems Summer School (EASSS) has been an annual event since 1999. This year, both of these important events were merged together, giving weight to the fact that multi-agent systems currently represent one of the hottest topics in AI research. The name, ACAI 2001 Summer School, is intended to emphasize that this event continues the tradition of regular ECCAI activities (ACAI), as well as the EASSS summer schools of AgentLink. Neuware -The main objective of this monograph is the study of a class of stochastic differential systems having unbounded coefficients, both in finite and in infinite dimension. We focus our attention on the regularity properties of the solutions and hence on the smoothing effect of the corresponding transition semigroups in the space of bounded and uniformly continuous functions. As an application of these results, we study the associated Kolmogorov equations, the large-time behaviour of the solutions and some stochastic optimal control problems together with the corresponding Hamilton- Jacobi-Bellman equations. In the literature there exists a large number of works (mostly in finite dimen sion) dealing with these arguments in the case of bounded Lipschitz-continuous coefficients and some of them concern the case of coefficients having linear growth. Few papers concern the case of non-Lipschitz coefficients, but they are mainly re lated to the study of the existence and the uniqueness of solutions for the stochastic system. Actually, the study of any further properties of those systems, such as their regularizing properties or their ergodicity, seems not to be developed widely enough. This theory grew up mainly after the important discovery of the properties of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the sixties. After C. Gardner, J. Greene, M. Kruskal et R. Miura [44] showed that this equation could be solved using the inverse scattering method and P. Lax [62] reinterpreted this method by his famous equation, many other deep observations have been made during the seventies, mainly by the Russian and the Japanese schools. In particular this theory was shown to be strongly connected with methods from algebraic geom etry (S. Novikov, V. B. Matveev, LM. Krichever. . . ), loop techniques (M. Adler, B. Kostant, W. W. Symes, M. J. Ablowitz . . . ) and Grassmannian manifolds in Hilbert spaces (M. Sato . . . ). Approximatively during the same period, the twist or theory of R. Penrose, built independentely, was applied successfully by R. Penrose and R. S. Ward for constructing self-dual Yang-Mills connections and four-dimensional self-dual manifolds using complex geometry methods. Then in the eighties it became clear that all these methods share the same roots and that other instances of integrable systems should exist, in particular in differential ge ometry. Neuware -All the efforts to build an intelligent machine have not yet produced a satisfactory autonomous system despite the great progress that has been made in developing computer hardware over the last three decades. The complexity of the tasks that a cognitive system must perform is still not understood well enough. Let us call the endeavor of building intelligent systems as the construction of Perception Action Cycles (PAC). The key idea is to incorporate representation and learning in a flexible geometric system. Until now this issue has always been a matter of neurocomputing. The most frequently used algebraic system for neurocomputation is matrix algebra. However, calculations in geometric algebra often reveal a geometric structure which remains obscure in the equivalent matrix computations. The development of PAC in a unified comprehensive mathematical system is urgently needed to bring unity and coherance to the problems of artificial intelligence. Accordingly, we are motivated by the challenge of applying geometric algebra to the development of PAC systems. Geometric algebra provides the general mathematical framework for the development of the ideas of multi-linear algebra, multi-variable analysis, and the representation of LIE groups and LIE algebras. There is strong evidence that geobetric albegra can be used to carry out efficient computations at all levels in the cognitive system. Geometric algebra reduces the complexity of algebraic expressions and as a result, it improves algorithms both in speed and accuracy. Thus, our goal is to construct PAC systems solely in the geometric algebra language. But the topic is becoming ever more important in mainstream signal processing, since the new JPEG2000 standard is based on wavelet techniques. Wavelet techniques are also impor tant in the MPEG-4 standard. So we thought that there might be room for yet another book on wavelets. This one is limited in scope, since it only covers the discrete wavelet trans form, which is central in modern digital signal processing. The presentation is based on the lifting technique discovered by W. Sweldens in 1994. Due to a result by I. Daubechies and W. Sweldens from 1996 this approach covers the same class of discrete wavelet transforms as the one based on two channel filter banks with perfect reconstruction. The goal of this book is to enable readers, with modest backgrounds in mathematics, signal analysis, and programming, to understand wavelet based techniques in signal analysis, and perhaps to enable them to apply such methods to real world problems. The book started as a set of lecture notes, written in Danish, for a group of teachers of signal analysis at Danish Engineering Colleges. Re cently, we seem to be starting to have a better understanding of the important ingredients of formal methods tools. Ideally, formal methods need to be intuitive to use (preferably using graphi cal interfaces), do not impose on the user an extensive learning period, and incur only small overhead to the development process. The methods exploit the multiscale structure of the physical problem to get approximating models that have the form of reflected diffusion processes, either controlled or uncontrolled. These ap proximating models have the basic structure of the original problem, but are significantly simpler. Much of inessential detail is eliminated (or 'av eraged out'). They greatly simplify analysis, design, and optimization and yield good approximations to problems that would otherwise be intractable, under broad conditions. Queueing-type processes are ubiquitous occurrences in operations re search, and in communications and computer systems. Indeed, it is hard to avoid them in modern technology. Impressive techniques, many based on Markov chain and ergodic theory, have been developed to han dle a great variety of models. A sampling of the numerous books includes [6, 8, 18, 27, 33, 46, 81, 86, 132, 133, 220, 243]. But the models of interest are growing fast in the face of the demands of new applications, particularly in communications and computer systems.

Neuware - In this book, a programming model is developed that addresses the fundamental issues of 'large-scale programming,' unifying several concepts from database theory, object-oriented programming and designs of reactive systems. The model and the associated theory have been christened 'Seuss.' The major goal of Seuss is to simplify multiprogramming. To this end, we separate the concern of concurrent implementation from the core program design problem. A program execution is understood as a single thread of control - sequential executions of actions that are chosen according to some scheduling policy - yet program implementation permits concurrent executions of multiple threads. As a consequence, it is possible to reason about the properties of a program from its single execution thread, whereas an implementation may exploit the inherent concurrency for efficient execution.

Neuware - This volume is based on papers presented at 'The Norway/United Nations (UN) Conference on Alien Species' which was hosted by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the International Conservation Union (lDCN) and the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The organisation and sponsoring of the conference was also a joint venture between the Norwegian Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Conference was held at Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim, Norway, 1-5 July 1996. This was the second Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity, the first being the NorwaylUNEP Expert Conference on Biodiversity, 24-28 May 1993. The conference was organised by the Norwegian Directorate of Nature Management, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and the Norwegian University for Science and Technology (NTNU) and its Centre for Environment and Development (SMU), all based in Trondheim. These institutions are all active in the fields of management, education and research related to biological diversity. Neuware -The objective of this book is to collect in a single volume the essentials of stochastic networks, from the classical product-form theory to the more re cent developments such as diffusion and fluid limits, stochastic comparisons, stability, control (dynamic scheduling) and optimization. The selection of materials inevitably is a reflection upon our bias and preference, but it is also driven to a large extent by our desire to provide a graduate-level text that is well balanced in breadth and depth, suitable for the classroom. Given the wide-ranging applications of stochastic networks in recent years, from supply chains to telecommunications, it is also our hope that the book will serve as a useful reference for researchers and students alike in these diverse fields. The book consists of three parts. There have been many important advances across the whole field of neuro science since 1990 and it was obvious that the first edition had become much less useful than when it was published. Hence this new edition. I have attempted to keep to the aims of the first edition by presenting the general principles of neuroscience in the context of experimental evidence. As with the first edition, the selection of material to include, or exclude, has been difficult and invariably reflects my personal biases. I hope that not too many readers will be disappointed with the selections. I have unashamedly retained material, and, in particular, illustrations where I think they remain of importance to an understanding of the field and to its historical development. As before, I have attempted as reasonable a coverage as possible within the confines of a book that should be easy to carry around, to handle and, I hope, to read. The book should be useful for anyone studying the nervous system at both undergraduate and immediate postgraduate levels.
