Verb-Second languages like German and Dutch display the verb-final pattern in embedded clauses, which can be confusing… for a developing child. This book addresses this problem in the context of Swiss German, itself a Germanic dialect. Numerous examples are given of natural language produced by two children who were consistently followed between the ages of 4 and 6. Unexpectedly, since previous literature has suggested that children master verb placement very early in their linguistic development, these children move the verb in any type of embedded clause, leading to many verb-placement errors. After introducing the problem and describing the data in detail, a technical analysis is developed in terms of a minimally split-CP, which is rather successful in accounting for these data. The book should interest advanced students and researchers in both language acquisition and syntax.

(Schmidt and Bannon, p. 22) A CIS, then, encompasses not only the information but also the practices by which actors establish its meaning for their collective work. These negotiated understandings of the information are as important as the availability of the information itself: The actors must attempt to jointly construct a common information space which goes beyond their individual personal information spaces. . . . The common information space is negotiated and established by the actors involved. (Schmidt and Bannon, p. 28) This is not to suggest that actors' understandings of the information are identical; they are simply 'common' enough to coordinate the work. People understand how the information is relevant for their own work. Therefore, individuals engaged in different activities will have different perspectives on the same information. The work of maintaining the common information space is the work that it takes to balance and accommodate these different perspectives. A 'bug' report in software development is a simple example. Software developers and quality assurance personnel have access to the same bug report information. However, access to information is not sufficient to coordinate their work.

During the last decade, we witnessed a tremendous growth in the theoretical and experimental studies focusing on the cost-effective deployment of wavelength routed networks. The majority of these studies, however, assumed ideal behavior of optical devices. In this book, we argue that for the successful deployment of optical networks, design algorithms and network protocols must be extended to accommodate the non-ideal behavior of optical devices. These extensions should not only focus on maintaining acceptable signal quality (e.g., 12 maintaining BER above 10- ), but should also motivate the development of optimization algorithms and signaling protocols which take transmission impairments into consideration. In addition, the design of enabling technologies, such as optical cross-connects, should be transmission-efficient. This book is a comprehensive treatment of the impact of transmission impairments on the design and management of wavelength-routed networks. We start with transparent networks, focusing on power implications such as cross-connect design, device allocation problems, and management issues. In this all-optical model, we propose a design space based on reduction in overall cost and ease of network management. This design concept, motivates various switch architectures and different optimization problems.

Time sharing operating systems took computing systems one step further and allowed several users and/or applications to time share the computing services of com puters. With the advances of networks and software tools, users and applications were able to time share the logical and physical services that are geographically dispersed across one or more networks. Virtual Computing (VC) concept aims at providing ubiquitous open computing services in analogous way to the services offered by Telephone and Elec trical (utility) companies. The VC environment should be dynamically setup to meet the requirements of a single user and/or application. The design and development of a dynamically programmable virtual comput ing environments is a challenging research problem. However, the recent advances in processing and network technology and software tools have successfully solved many of the obstacles facing the wide deployment of virtual computing environments as will be outlined next.

The vast majority of engineering carbons have Sp2 type bonding and are related in some way to the structure of graphite. In the c-direction the bonding in graphite is of van der Waals character with the result that graphite is highly anisotropic in its properties and is probably unique in showing both the highest and lowest bond strengths in different directions in the same crystal.

It has been almost a century since Alfred Binet suggested that assessment of the processes of learn ing should constitute a priority in the mental testing movement, and over 60 years since Andre Rey made the same suggestion. An important mode…l that supports many contemporary approaches to 'flexible' or 'process' assessment was offered by Vygotsky in the 1920s. The ground breaking work by Reuven Feuerstein and his Swiss colleagues on process assessment of North African Jewish children was done in the early 1950s. In the intervening years almost every serious psy chometrist has, at one time or another, called for emphasis on assessment of the of learning, rather than an exclusive emphasis on assessment of the processes products of prior opportunities to learn. One has to wonder why we have had to wait so long for formalization and instrumentation of the methods for doing just that! Of course, we psychologists like to do what we do well, and we have learned to do static, normative assessment, especially of 'intelligence,' very well indeed. Unfortunately, it is also true that dynamic/interactive assessment has not attracted or fueled the volume of high-quality research that is still going to be necessary if it is to survive as a widely used supplement to static, normative testing. This volume, incorporating a strong research base, goes a long way toward remedia tion of that situation.

The SOC proposed a program with extended general overviews and highlights of non-evolved and evolved binaries, with low mass, intermediate mass and massive components, the link with supernova explosions, pulsars and gamma-ray bursts, the effect of binaries on the chemical evo lution of galaxies. Specialists in the different research fields were invited and have given very interesting and highly educational talks. As can be noticed by reading the proceedings, the authors have put a lot of effort in preparing their contribution.

But only now emerging is the recognition that peptides can Self-assemble into a wide variety of non-protein-like structures, including fibrils, fibres, tubules, sheets and monolayers. These are exciting observations and, more so, the potential for materials and medical exploitations is so wide ranging that over 80 scientists from Europe, USA, Japan and Israel. met 1-6 July 1999 in Crete, to discuss the wide-ranging implications of these novel developments. There was a spirit of excitement about the workshop indicative of an important new endeavor. The emerging perception is that of a new class of materials set to become commercially viable early in the 21st century.

TPHOLs 2001 was collocated with the 11th Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri cation Methods (CHARME 2001). This was held 4-7 September 2001 in nearby Livingston, Scotland at the Institute for System Level Integration, and a joint half-day session of talks was arranged for the 5th September in Edinburgh. An excursion to Traquair House and a banquet in the Playfair Library of Old College, University of Edinburgh were also jointly organized. The proceedings of CHARME 2001 have been p- lished as volume 2144 of Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, with Tiziana Margaria and Tom Melham as editors. Each of the 47 papers submitted in the full research category was refereed by at least 3 reviewers who were selected by the Program Committee. Of these submissions, 23 were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2001 also o ered a venue for the presentation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. The organisers are very grateful for the help they received to make IDMS 2001 a successful event. In the past, imaging of these tumors and… tumor-like lesions was frequently limited to conventional radiography. In recent years, however, the application of more advanced imaging methods, especially CT and MR, to the analysis of these lesions has become common place. Thus, the physician evaluating these tumors must become familiar with their manifestations in images derived from both conventional and advanced techniques. This book utilizes individual, carefully chosen cases to emphasize the im portant imaging characteristics of a variety of significant tumors and tumor like lesions of bone and soft tissue. The organization of each case includes a short clinical history, several figures that document the routine radiographic, CT and/or MR imaging features of the lesion, a discussion of the differential diagnostic considerations, the rationale for choosing the single most likely diagnosis, a description of the pathologic findings, and a few general com ments regarding the specific disease entity. This format makes for easy and enjoyable reading and, further, allows the reader to test his or her knowledge of imaging findings in each individual case. This format is similar to that practiced at the viewbox or console each day at teaching centers throughout the world. It is a tested and effective method of instruction. 180 pp. Englisch.

The next PaCT conferences were held in Obninsk (near Moscow), August 30 September 4, 1993; in St.Petersburg, September 12 15, 1995; in Yaroslavl September 9 12, 1997; and in Pushkin (near St.Petersburg) from September 6 10, 1999. The PaCT proceedings are published by Springer- Verlag in the LNCS series. PaCT-2001 was jointly organized by the Institute of Computational Mat- maticsandMathematicalGeophysicsoftheRussianAcademyofSciences(No- sibirsk), the State University, and the State Technical University of Novosibirsk. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists working with theory, architecture, software, hardware, and solution of large-scale problems in order to provide integrated discussions on parallel computing technologies. The conference attracted about 100 participants from around the world. - thors from 17 countries submitted 81 papers. Of those submitted, 36 papers were selected for the conference as regular ones; there were also 4 invited - pers. In addition there were a number of posters presented. The first day of the workshop was open to anyone interested in the area of Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) and addressed the topic of CLIR system evaluation. The second day was restricted to participants in the CLEF 2000 evaluation campaign and to their - periments. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the workshop and provides a record of the campaign. CLEF is currently an activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital - braries, funded by the EC Information Society Technologies to further research in digital library technologies. The activity is organized in collaboration with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
