During the last decade, we witnessed a tremendous growth in the theoretical and experimental studies focusing on the cost-effective deployment of wavelength routed networks. The majority of these studies, however, assumed ideal behavior of optical devices. In this book, we argue that for the successful deployment of optical networks, design algorithms and network protocols must be extended to accommodate the non-ideal behavior of optical devices. These extensions should not only focus on maintaining acceptable signal quality (e.g., 12 maintaining BER above 10- ), but should also motivate the development of optimization algorithms and signaling protocols which take transmission impairments into consideration. In addition, the design of enabling technologies, such as optical cross-connects, should be transmission-efficient. This book is a comprehensive treatment of the impact of transmission impairments on the design and management of wavelength-routed networks. We start with transparent networks, focusing on power implications such as cross-connect design, device allocation problems, and management issues. In this all-optical model, we propose a design space based on reduction in overall cost and ease of network management. This design concept, motivates various switch architectures and different optimization problems.

Verb-Second languages like German and Dutch display the verb-final pattern in embedded clauses, which can be confusing… for a developing child. This book addresses this problem in the context of Swiss German, itself a Germanic dialect. Numerous examples are given of natural language produced by two children who were consistently followed between the ages of 4 and 6. Unexpectedly, since previous literature has suggested that children master verb placement very early in their linguistic development, these children move the verb in any type of embedded clause, leading to many verb-placement errors. After introducing the problem and describing the data in detail, a technical analysis is developed in terms of a minimally split-CP, which is rather successful in accounting for these data. The book should interest advanced students and researchers in both language acquisition and syntax.

These negotiated understandings of the information are as important as the availability of the information itself: The actors must attempt to jointly construct a common information space which goes beyond their individual personal information spaces. . . . The common information space is negotiated and established by the actors involved. (Schmidt and Bannon, p. 28) This is not to suggest that actors' understandings of the information are identical; they are simply 'common' enough to coordinate the work. People understand how the information is relevant for their own work. Therefore, individuals engaged in different activities will have different perspectives on the same information. The work of maintaining the common information space is the work that it takes to balance and accommodate these different perspectives. A 'bug' report in software development is a simple example. Software developers and quality assurance personnel have access to the same bug report information. However, access to information is not sufficient to coordinate their work.

With the advances of networks and software tools, users and applications were able to time share the logical and physical services that are geographically dispersed across one or more networks. Virtual Computing (VC) concept aims at providing ubiquitous open computing services in analogous way to the services offered by Telephone and Elec trical (utility) companies. The VC environment should be dynamically setup to meet the requirements of a single user and/or application. The design and development of a dynamically programmable virtual comput ing environments is a challenging research problem. However, the recent advances in processing and network technology and software tools have successfully solved many of the obstacles facing the wide deployment of virtual computing environments as will be outlined next.

This FORTE 2001 conference proceedings contains 24 refereed papers and 4 invited papers on the subjects. We regret that many good papers submitted could not be published in this volume due to the lack of space. FORTE 2001 was organized under the auspices of IFIP WG 6.1 by Information and Communications University of Korea. It was financially supported by Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea. This is a pointer to the wider significance of the self-assembling properties of polypeptides. It has been long known that, in silk, polypeptides are assembled into- sheet structures which impart on the material its highly exploitable properties of flexibility combined with high tensile strength. But only now emerging is the recognition that peptides can Self-assemble into a wide variety of non-protein-like structures, including fibrils, fibres, tubules, sheets and monolayers. These are exciting observations and, more so, the potential for materials and medical exploitations is so wide ranging that over 80 scientists from Europe, USA, Japan and Israel. met 1-6 July 1999 in Crete, to discuss the wide-ranging implications of these novel developments. There was a spirit of excitement about the workshop indicative of an important new endeavor. The emerging perception is that of a new class of materials set to become commercially viable early in the 21st century.

Continuing a series of international conferences devoted to Inductive Logic Programming and Relational Learning, ILP2001 is the central annual event for researchersinterestedinlearningstructuredknowledgefromstructuredexamples and background knowledge. One recent one major challenge for ILP has been to contribute to the ex- nentialemergenceofDataMining,andtoaddressthehandlingofmulti-relational databases. On the one hand, ILP has developed a body of theoretical results and algorithmicstrategiesforexploringrelationaldata,essentiallybutnotexclusively from a supervised learning viewpoint. These results are directly relevant to an e cient exploration of multi-relational databases. Ontheotherhand,DataMiningmightrequirespeci crelationalstrategiesto be developed, especially with regard to the scalability issue. The near-colocation of ILP2001 with ECML2001-PKDD2001 was an incentive to increase cro- fertilization between the ILP relational savoir-faire and the new problems and learning goals addressed and to be addressed in Data Mining. Thirty-seven papers were submitted to ILP, among which twenty-one were selected and appear in these proceedings. Several non-disjoint trends can be observed, along an admittedly subjective clustering. On the theoretical side, a new mode of inference is proposed by K. Inoue, analog to the open-ended mode of Bayesian reasoning (where the frontier - tween induction and abduction wanes). New learning re nement operators are proposed by L. Badea, while R. TPHOLs 2001 was collocated with the 11th Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri cation Methods (CHARME 2001). This was held 4-7 September 2001 in nearby Livingston, Scotland at the Institute for System Level Integration, and a joint half-day session of talks was arranged for the 5th September in Edinburgh. An excursion to Traquair House and a banquet in the Playfair Library of Old College, University of Edinburgh were also jointly organized. The proceedings of CHARME 2001 have been p- lished as volume 2144 of Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, with Tiziana Margaria and Tom Melham as editors. Each of the 47 papers submitted in the full research category was refereed by at least 3 reviewers who were selected by the Program Committee. Of these submissions, 23 were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2001 also o ered a venue for the presentation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. The campaign cul- nated in a two-day workshop in Lisbon, Portugal, 21 22 September, immediately…following the fourth European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL 2000). The first day of the workshop was open to anyone interested in the area of Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) and addressed the topic of CLIR system evaluation. The goal was to identify the actual contribution of evaluation to system development and to determine what could be done in the future to stimulate progress. The second day was restricted to participants in the CLEF 2000 evaluation campaign and to their - periments. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the workshop and provides a record of the campaign. CLEF is currently an activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital - braries, funded by the EC Information Society Technologies to further research in digital library technologies. The activity is organized in collaboration with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The rst two CHES Workshops were held in Massachusetts, and this was the rst Workshop to be held in Europe. There was a large numb…er of submissions this year, and in response the technical program was extended to 2 1/2 days. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, many excellent submissions were made. Selecting the papers for this year's CHES was not an easy task, and weregretthatwehadtorejectseveralveryinterstingpapersduetotheac l kof time. There were 66 submitted contributions this year, of which 31, or 47%, were selected for presentation. If we look at the number of submitted papers at CHES '99 (42 papers) and CHES 2001 (51 papers), we observe a steady increase. We interpret this as a continuing need for a workshop series which combines theory and practice for integrating strong security features into modern communications and computer applications. In addition to the submitted contributions, Ross Anderson from Cambridge University, UK, and Adi Shamir from The Weizmann Institute, Israel, gave invited talks. As in previous years, the focus of the workshop is on all aspects of cryp- graphichardwareandembeddedsystemdesign.Ofspecialinterestwerecont- butions that describe new methods for e cient hardware implementations and high-speed software for embedded systems, e.g., smart cards, microprocessors, DSPs, etc. CHES also continues to be an important forum for new theoretical andpractical ndingsintheimportantandgrowing eldofside-channelattacks. 432 pp. Englisch.
