(Schmidt and Bannon, p. 22) A CIS, then, encompasses not only the information but also the practices by which actors establish its meaning for their collective work. These negotiated understandings of the information are as important as the availability of the information itself: The actors must attempt to jointly construct a common information space which goes beyond their individual personal information spaces. . . . The common information space is negotiated and established by the actors involved. (Schmidt and Bannon, p. 28) This is not to suggest that actors' understandings of the information are identical; they are simply 'common' enough to coordinate the work. People understand how the information is relevant for their own work. Therefore, individuals engaged in different activities will have different perspectives on the same information. The work of maintaining the common information space is the work that it takes to balance and accommodate these different perspectives. A 'bug' report in software development is a simple example. Software developers and quality assurance personnel have access to the same bug report information. However, access to information is not sufficient to coordinate their work.

During the last decade, we witnessed a tremendous growth in the theoretical and experimental studies focusing on the cost-effective deployment of wavelength routed networks. The majority of these studies, however, assumed ideal behavior of optical devices. In this book, we argue that for the successful deployment of optical networks, design algorithms and network protocols must be extended to accommodate the non-ideal behavior of optical devices. These extensions should not only focus on maintaining acceptable signal quality (e.g., 12 maintaining BER above 10- ), but should also motivate the development of optimization algorithms and signaling protocols which take transmission impairments into consideration. In addition, the design of enabling technologies, such as optical cross-connects, should be transmission-efficient. This book is a comprehensive treatment of the impact of transmission impairments on the design and management of wavelength-routed networks. We start with transparent networks, focusing on power implications such as cross-connect design, device allocation problems, and management issues. In this all-optical model, we propose a design space based on reduction in overall cost and ease of network management. This design concept, motivates various switch architectures and different optimization problems.

Virtual Computing (VC) concept aims at providing ubiquitous open computing services in analogous way to the services offered by Telephone and Elec trical (utility) companies. The VC environment should be dynamically setup to meet the requirements of a single user and/or application. The design and development of a dynamically programmable virtual comput ing environments is a challenging research problem. However, the recent advances in processing and network technology and software tools have successfully solved many of the obstacles facing the wide deployment of virtual computing environments as will be outlined next.

It has been almost a century since Alfred Binet suggested that assessment of the processes of learn ing should constitute a priority in the mental testing movement, and over 60 years since Andre Rey made the same suggestion. An important mode…l that supports many contemporary approaches to 'flexible' or 'process' assessment was offered by Vygotsky in the 1920s. The ground breaking work by Reuven Feuerstein and his Swiss colleagues on process assessment of North African Jewish children was done in the early 1950s. In the intervening years almost every serious psy chometrist has, at one time or another, called for emphasis on assessment of the of learning, rather than an exclusive emphasis on assessment of the processes products of prior opportunities to learn. One has to wonder why we have had to wait so long for formalization and instrumentation of the methods for doing just that! Of course, we psychologists like to do what we do well, and we have learned to do static, normative assessment, especially of 'intelligence,' very well indeed. Unfortunately, it is also true that dynamic/interactive assessment has not attracted or fueled the volume of high-quality research that is still going to be necessary if it is to survive as a widely used supplement to static, normative testing. This volume, incorporating a strong research base, goes a long way toward remedia tion of that situation.

These are exciting observations and, more so, the potential for materials and medical exploitations is so wide ranging that over 80 scientists from Europe, USA, Japan and Israel. met 1-6 July 1999 in Crete, to discuss the wide-ranging implications of these novel developments. There was a spirit of excitement about the workshop indicative of an important new endeavor. The emerging perception is that of a new class of materials set to become commercially viable early in the 21st century.

For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spont…aneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book 'Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena' participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). GCSE 2001 constituted another important step forward and provided a platform for academic and industrial researchers to exchange ideas. These proceedings represent the third conference on generative and com- nent-based software engineering. The conference originated as a special track on generative programming from the Smalltalk and Java in Industry and - ucation Conference (STJA), organized by the working group 'Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering' of the 'Gesellschaft fur Informatik' FG 2.1.9 'Object-Oriented Software Engineering.' However, the conference has evolved substantially since then, with its own, independent stature, invited speakers, and, most importantly, a stable and growing community. This year's conference attracted 43 submissions from all over the world, - dicating the broad, international interest in the research eld. Based on careful review by the program committee, 14 papers were selected for presentation. These proceedings contain the technical programme for I…DMS 2001, held September 4 7, 2001 in Lancaster, UK. For the technical programme this year we received 48 research papers from both a- demic and industrial institutions all around the world. After the review process, 15 were accepted as full papers for publication, and a further 8 as short positional papers, intended to provoke debate. The technical programme was complimented by three invited papers: QoS for Multimedia What's Going to Make It Pay by Derek McAuley, E nabling the Internet to Provide Multimedia Services by Markus H- mann, and MPEG-21 Standard: Why an Open Multimedia Framework by Fernando Pereira. The organisers are very grateful for the help they received to make IDMS 2001 a successful event. In particular, we would like to thank the PC for their first class - views of papers, particularly considering the tight reviewing deadlines this year. Also, we would like to acknowledge the support from Agilent, BTexact Technologies, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft Research, Orange, and Sony Electronics without whom IDMS 2001 would not have been such a memorable event. In the past, imaging of these tumors and… tumor-like lesions was frequently limited to conventional radiography. In recent years, however, the application of more advanced imaging methods, especially CT and MR, to the analysis of these lesions has become common place. Thus, the physician evaluating these tumors must become familiar with their manifestations in images derived from both conventional and advanced techniques. This book utilizes individual, carefully chosen cases to emphasize the im portant imaging characteristics of a variety of significant tumors and tumor like lesions of bone and soft tissue. The organization of each case includes a short clinical history, several figures that document the routine radiographic, CT and/or MR imaging features of the lesion, a discussion of the differential diagnostic considerations, the rationale for choosing the single most likely diagnosis, a description of the pathologic findings, and a few general com ments regarding the specific disease entity. This format makes for easy and enjoyable reading and, further, allows the reader to test his or her knowledge of imaging findings in each individual case. This format is similar to that practiced at the viewbox or console each day at teaching centers throughout the world. It is a tested and effective method of instruction. 180 pp. Englisch.

This was the sixth international conference in the PaCT series, organized in Russia every odd… year. The rst conference, PaCT-91, was held in Novosibirsk (Academgorodok), September 7 11, 1991. The next PaCT conferences were held in Obninsk (near Moscow), August 30 September 4, 1993; in St.Petersburg, September 12 15, 1995; in Yaroslavl September 9 12, 1997; and in Pushkin (near St.Petersburg) from September 6 10, 1999. The PaCT proceedings are published by Springer- Verlag in the LNCS series. PaCT-2001 was jointly organized by the Institute of Computational Mat- maticsandMathematicalGeophysicsoftheRussianAcademyofSciences(No- sibirsk), the State University, and the State Technical University of Novosibirsk. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists working with theory, architecture, software, hardware, and solution of large-scale problems in order to provide integrated discussions on parallel computing technologies. The conference attracted about 100 participants from around the world. - thors from 17 countries submitted 81 papers. Of those submitted, 36 papers were selected for the conference as regular ones; there were also 4 invited - pers. In addition there were a number of posters presented. The conference at which the papers in this volume were presented was the ninth internati…onal conference on the topic of Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS 2001), and was held in Trento, Italy on September 5-7, 2001. Like the previous conferences, CoopIS 2001 has been remarkably successful in bringing together representatives of many di erent elds, spanning the entire range of e ective web-based Cooperative Information Systems, and with interests ranging from industrial experience to original research concepts and results. The 29 papers collected here out of the 79 ones that were submitted, dem- strate well the range of results achieved in several areas such as agent te- nologies, models and architectures, web systems, information integration, m- dleware technologies, federated and multi-database systems. The papers th- selves, however, do not convey the lively excitement of the conference itself, and the continuing spirit of cooperation and communication across disciplines that has been the hallmark of these conferences. We would especially like to thank our keynote speakers: Philip A. Bernstein (Microsoft Research, USA), Edward E. Cobb (BEA Systems, USA), and Ma- izio Lenzerini (Universit`a di Roma La Sapienza , Italy) for providing a portrait of the best contemporary work in the eld.
