Alfred Schutz is now recogniz ed to have been a profoundly insightful philosopher who explor ed the nature of social reality and the social sciences. His works are exercising a great influence in a wide range of problems and disciplines, the latter including the social sciences themselves. All of this is testimony to the sagacity and penetrating character of his analyses as well as the fruitfulness and soundness of his con cepts. Philosophy proceeds, however, by not merely accepting the work of great philosophers, but by engaging them in critical philosophic dialogue. But, since it is we who do the representing, it is also about us. And, since it is the universe which we represent, it is also about the universe. In the end, then, this book is about everything, which, since it is a philosophy book, is as it should be. I recognize that it is nowadays unfashionable to write books about every thing. Philosophers of language, it will be said, ought to stick to writing about language; philosophers of science, to writing about science; epis temologists, to writing about knowing; and so on. The real world, however, perversely refuses to carve itself up so neatly, and, although I recognize that the real w,orld is nowadays also unfashionable, in the end I judged that one might get closer to the truth of various matters by going along with it. So I have done so. lt was Wilfrid Sellars who initially convinced me of the virtues of this way of proceeding. Such an account necessarily had to be comprehensive and reasonably detailed. Although it could be, and indeed has been, used by those who were making an acquaintance with this branch of genetics for the first time, it went beyond their needs. We have been encouraged therefore to write an introduction to the genetical analysis of continuous variation aimed primarily at senior undergraduate and postgraduate students, and concentrating on basic considerations, basic principles and basic techniques. This has meant, of course, omitting all reference to some phenomena of more restricted interest, notably sex-linkage, ma ternal effects, haploidy and polyploidy. It has meant, too, that even with some phenomena which have been included, like interactions, linkage and effective factors, the discussions cannot go into full detail. Anyone who is interested, however, can find further information in Biometricai Genetics, to which detailed references have been given where it ap peared that these would be helpful. This development was supported by a rather powerfull development taking place in the area of texture studies itself: Besides the usual, more qualitative, characterization of a texture by pole figures a fully quantitative description by a three-dimensional orientation distribution function (ODF) has been increasingly applied. There are two sides to the problem of quantitative representation of textures. One involves the mathematical technique associated with the acquisition of an ODF, and its transforms, from the experimental data, whereas the other concerns the methods of a rational description and interpretation of an ODF. The fust side can be considered from the practicaf point of view as experimental-data processing which is accomplished by a computer and is sort of a continuation of the measurement itself. Much attention has been paid to this problem, particulary by Bunge, who has written up achievements in this field in this extensive monograph /1/ and in conference proceedings /2/. In fact, crystals differ from the molecules of finite size that are studied in chemistry, only in their extremely large number of particles. Furthermore, the existence of faces, which limit the spread of crystals in space, necessarily breaks the periodicity of the system. For these reasons it is natural to apply to crystals the concepts and methods that have been widely tested in the study of molecules. Pauling first emphasized this point 1 and used it to explain the electronic structure of crystals, thought to be infinite and perfect. The aim of this work is to show, with the help of a few examples, the possibilities offered by quantum chemistry for tackling the problems of crystal electronic structure, of crystallographic arrangements as well as their macroscopic shape, and of distortion effects caused by the presence of faces.
