Closed vs. Open Systems By de nition, the time evolution of a closed physical systemS is deterministic. It is usually described by a differential equation x = X(x ) on the manifold M of t t possible con gurations of the system. If the initial con guration x M is known 0 then the solution of the corresponding initial value problem yields the con guration x at any future time t. This applies to classical as well as to quantum systems. In the t classical case M is the phase space of the system and x describes the positions and t velocities of the various components (or degrees of freedom) ofS at time t. Inthe quantum case, according to the orthodoxinterpretation of quantum mechanics, M is a Hilbert space and x a unit vector ¿ the wave function ¿ describing the quantum t state of the system at time t. Apart from the genital tract and the breast, recognized as traditional targets for estrogens, the skeleton, the vascular tree, or the central nervous system, are good examples of territories that have demonstrated sensitivity to estrogens. This evidence has created great interest, as shown by the great amount of lit- ature that has been produced on the bene ts and risks associated with the use of estrogens. In parallel to the clinical interest, basic research has improved our kno- edge on the complexities involved in estrogen action at the molecular level. Together with effects mediated through speci c receptors, a concept that has been the mainstay of the interpretation of estrogen action for years, there is enough evidence to hold the notion of receptor-independent effects. The substantial advances in modern technology applied to research have helped in enlightening the particulars of this versatile action of estrogens. This more detailed knowledge on the sophisticated mechanism of action of estrogens has nourished the emergence of multiple hypotheses speculating with the p- sibility of manipulating estrogen action. Their original motivation was to harmonize the series and par…allel laws satis ed by such systems. In so doing, they initiated a study in stochastic geometry which has exhibited beautiful structure in its own right, and which has become a central tool in the pursuit of one of the oldest challenges of classical statistical mechanics, namely to model and analyse the ferromagnet and especially its phase transition. The importance of the model for probability and statistical mechanics was not fully recognized until the late 1980s. There are two reasons for this period of dormancy. Although the early publications of 1969¿1972 contained many of the basic properties of the model, the emphasis placed there upon combinatorial aspects may have obscured its potential for applications. In addition, many of the geometrical arguments necessary for studying the model were not known prior to 1980, but were developed during the ¿decade of percolation¿ that began 1 then. In 1980 was published the proof that p = for bond percolation on the c 2 square lattice, and this was followed soon by Harry Kesten¿s monograph on t- dimensionalpercolation. Percolationmovedintohigherdimensionsaround1986, and many of the mathematical issues of the day were resolved by 1989.
