He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other two in that it gives a firsthand account of the work done in the People's Republic of China in several complex variables in the last four decades.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.

The discipline of gynecology and obstetrics, recogniz ing the importance of these problems and the need for spe cial expertise in reproductive endocrinology and its atten dant clinical challenges in fertility and infertility, has now formalized the training of specialists in this area of scientific knowledge in a further effort to advance the skills of diag nosis and treatment attendant on these complex problems. Slowly but steadily, as befits the complexity of the endocrine and metabolic pathways involved, the scientific basis of reproductive physiology has been revealed by the research of physicians, biochemists, and physiologists. It is clear that no significant clinical advance can be made with out the foundation of such new knowledge. Indeed, the successful treatment of infertility resulting from failure of ovulation was based on just such a scientific advance. 316 pp. Englisch.

Most extant tre atments of the subject are multi-authored, even when they deal with just one of these various subdivisions. Moreover, the corresponding specialists have seen the cancer problem as one within the purview of their own calling. In nature, however, the problem is a unity: its immunology, biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, for example, are closely interdependent. Con sequently, its proper appraisal requires detailed examination of all of the major parts, but with the primary aim of a single-minded and hence unified survey of the whole. The present work is an offering in this direction. It is addressed specifically to all practising oncologists, whether clinical or ex perimental, and generally to all serious students of the growth of oncology and medicine from ancient to modern times. 448 pp. Englisch.

The interests covered by the papers at one of these conferences vary from year to year and as a whole cover a wide spread of topics. This is as it should be. Old problems that have been with us for many years are being attacked again with new and more effective tools, new problems are continually arising, and new methods of great power are being developed. These developments are occurring in each of the fields covered, as may readily be seen by a glance at this twelfth volume and other recent volumes of this series. It seems clear that the policy of having these conferences and these volumes cover a wide field rather than a single one such as, for example, structure determination, or fluorescence analysis, is a policy that meets with general approval and should be continued. I understand there is every intention to do so. C. S. Barrett It is customary to acknowledge in each volume the invited session chairmen of the three-day meeting. They and the sessions at which they presided (21-23 August 1968) were as follows: CRYSTALLOGRAPHY AND DIFFRACTION. C. S. Barrett, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Each meeting gets larger to encompass the extension of chemotherapy into new areas. In some instances, exp~sion has been rapid, for example in cephalosporins, pen icillins and combination chemotherapy of cancer - in others slow, as in the field of parasitology. New problems of resistance and untoward effects arise; reduction of host toxicity without loss of antitumour activity by new substances occupies wide attention. The improved results with cancer chemotherapy, es pecially in leukaemias, are leading to a greater prevalence of severe infection in patients so treated, pharmacokinetics of drugs in normal and diseased subjects is rece1v1ng increasing attention along with related problems of bioavailability and interactions between drugs. Meanwhile the attack on some of the major bacterial infections, such as gonorrhoea and tubercu losis, which were among the first infections to feel the impact of chemotherapy, still continue to be major world problems and are now under attack with new agents and new methods. From this wide field and the 1,000 papers read at the Congress we have produced Proceedings which reflect the variety and vigour of research in this important field of medicine. It was not possible to include all of the papers presented at the Congress but we have attempted to include most aspects of cur rent progress in chemotherapy. 640 pp. Englisch.

The human and economic costs of the ESRD program serve to emphasize the need to prevent or to arrest those diseases resulting in chronic renal failure, since none of the available treatments is without complications and/or side effects. The ESRD program, the only federal one that provides coverage for a catastrophic illness for almost the entire population (those qualifying under Social Security), cost almost $2 billion in 1983. The escalating costs of the ESRD program are attributed to the increasing number of patients requiring treatment and have focused concerns of the United States Government, both Congress and the administration, on ESRD. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), especially the Kidney, Urology, and Hematology Division of the National Institutes of Arthritis, Diabetes, and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIADDK), supports a sizable research program that bears on chronic renal disease and in association with this has sponsored many conferences and workshops on research on and causes and complications of chronic renal failure. This book is an outgrowth of the issues addressed by participants at a number of NIH conferences held in the 1980s. 624 pp. Englisch.

There was agreement in most instances that we are facing some kind of publication explosion, and that the present type of compact and personalized reviews may be of help, from both a conceptual and a purely informational standpoint. The aims of the series were, and still are, to focus attention on the rapidly changing fields within the realm of immunology, and to present in each chapter the summation of results generated by an investigator or group of Investigators, either as an analysis of their own work or as a correlation of such work with the general field in question. The present volume does not differ in its construction from its predecessors, although it does concentrate on a single target, the T lymphocyte and its biology. The selection of subjects as well as contributors has been the sole responsi bility of this editor; however, the actual format and length of the individual contributions was left to the discretion and inspiration of the different authors. Even the styles, ranging from the concise statement to the meticulously detailed review, attest to the freedom of format. 404 pp. Englisch.

The first chapter, by Barthel, Wachter, and Gores, covers the topic of conductance of nonaqueous pro tic and aprotic electro lyte solutions. This field is not only of intrinsic interest in itself, illustrating the important departures of ion-transport behavior in organic solvents from that, more well known, in water, but the information and extensive new data presented in this chapter will be of interest to those working with nonaqueous alkali-metal batteries where the conductivity and ion-association behavior of electrolytes in various solvents other than water is of great importance. The second chapter is devoted to a very fundamental and ubiquitous aspect of electrochemistry of electrodes: the state of solvent molecules, adsorbed and oriented, at their surfaces. The role of solvent adsorption and orientation in double-layer proper ties, it will be recalled, remained poorly understood until the early 1960s. This chapter, by Trasatti, gives a thorough account of the present state of knowledge of solvent orientation at electrode interfaces and of the unsuspected (until recent years) role it plays in properties of the double layer and in determining the potential profile at charged metal surfaces in solution. 444 pp. Englisch.

One of the sessions related to this theme was 'Transport Processes in the Oceans' chaired by R. P. Shaw and R. J. Gibbs. This session was devoted to the study of transport processes and their hydrodynamic modeling in large water bodies such as oceans and lakes; transport of both dissolved and solid material was con sidered. The interest developed at the session led to the conclu sion that the papers presented there should be published as a set rather than dispersed among the various technical journals that rep resent the wide variety of technical affiliations of the authors. This variety, in fact, is typical of this particular field with con tributors identified as chemical engineers, civil engineers, environ~ mental engineers, mechanical engineers, oceanographers and applied mechanicians to name just a few. Such an interdisciplinary area re quires more effort in keeping abreast of developments than do the traditional areas, since new material may be developed and presented in a wide range of technical journals and professional meetings. 300 pp. Englisch.

Virology, as a science, having passed only recently through its descriptive phase of naming and num bering, has probably reached that stage at which relatively few new truly new-viruses will be discovered. Triggered by the intellectual probes and techniques of molecular biology, genetics, biochemical cytology, and high resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, the field has experienced a genuine information explosion. Few serious attempts have been made to chronicle these events. This comprehensive series, which will comprise some 6000 pages in a total of about 18 volumes, represents a commitment by a large group of active investigators to analyze, digest, and expostulate on the great mass of data relating to viruses, much of which is now amorphous and disjointed, and scattered throughout a wide literature. In this way, we hope to place the entire field in perspective, and to develop an invalu able reference and sourcebook for researchers and students at all levels. This series i~ designed as a continuum that can be entered anywhere, but which also provides a logical progression of developing facts and integrated concepts. 364 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Data analysis is important from two points of view: first, it enables a large mass of information to be reduced to a reasonable compass, and second, it assists in the interpretation of experimental results against some framework of theory. The purpose of this text is to provide a practical introduction to numerical methods of data analysis which have applica tion in the field of experimental chemical kinetics. Recognizing that kinetic data have many features in common with data derived from other sources, I have considered it appropriate to discuss a selection of general methods of data analysis in the early chapters of the text. It is the author's experience that an outline of these methods is not always easy to locate in summary form, and that their usefulness is often not sufficiently appreciated. Inclusion of these methods in the early chapters has been aimed at simplifying discussion in the later chapters which are more particularly concerned with kinetic systems. By the provision of a number of worked examples and problems, it is hoped that the reader will develop a feeling for the range of methods available and for their relative merits. Throughout the text, the mathematical treatment has been kept relatively simple, lengthy proofs being avoided. I have preferred to indicate the 'sense' and usefulness of the various methods rather than to justify them on strict mathematical grounds. 140 pp. Englisch.

The first follow-up colloquium on 'The Smooth Muscle of the Artery' was held in Heidelberg in 1973. Planning for the present one was undertaken by the editors with Dr. C. Forbes Dewey, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The meeting itself was held June, 1976 at the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsy1vani~, under the joint sponsorship of Totts Gap Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with financial support from the American Heart Association, the Office of Naval Research, and the Smith, Kline and French Company. The objective of the series of meetings, beginning at Lindau has been to examine from an interdisciplinary and international point of view the fundamental physiologic and pathophysiologic processes pertinent to the development of arteriosclerosis. This colloquium sought to examine critically the evidence relating hemodynamic forces to atherogenesis, to reconcile disparate findings and interpretations in so far as possible; and to make a synthesis of the present state of knowledge of the dynamics of arterial flow. Grateful acknowledgement is made for the valuable assistance of Joan Martin and Helen Goodell in the entire editorial process. The editors acknowledge with thanks the secretarial assistance of Moira Martin, Colleen Nagle, Cindy Carter and Pat Ide. Special thanks are due Joy Lowe who executed the entire final manuscript. 484 pp. Englisch.

Al though it may appear that another such publication may be superflu ous, the subject of alcohol abuse is still open for further explora tion and the field of the biochemical pharmacology of ethanol is in its infancy. This is evidenced, for example, by the unavailability of any drugs that are designed specifically for the treatment of alcohol intoxication or alcohol addiction. The impetus for this publication was generated by a spontane ous enthusiasm following the symposium on BiochemicaZ Ph~acoZogy of EthanoZ that was organized at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, Division of Biological Chemistry in August 1973 in Chicago. It was the first symposium on such a topic ever in cluded in the program of that large society of American chemists. The original aim of the symposium was to acquaint the members of the society with some basic facts about the biological chemistry of ethanol. The symposium included seven papers and covered a rela tively narrow range of ethanol biochemistry. In view of the enthu siasm shown at the Chemical Society meeting, the panelists decided to publish the program and to amplify it by inclusion of additional topics which have remained relatively unexplored in earlier publica tions. In addition, reviews have been included which discuss old topics from a new perspective. 388 pp. Englisch.

This growth has greatly expanded our understanding of the electrical properties and ultrastructure of chemosensory organs, of the role of chemoreception in the control of behavior, of the organization of higher centers in the chemosensory pathways, and of the chemical constituents of mixtures of biologic significance. But one area where advances have been especially impressive is concerned with the properties of pheromones and substances with similar biologic effects. Pheromones are compounds, produced by certain animals, which have the effect of inducing one or more specific responses within members of the same or closely related species. Some of these substances-the 'primer' pheromones-act on the endocrine system, probably through the central nervous system. The pregnancy block induced in mice by the odor of strange males is a striking example. Others, such as 'signalling' or 'releaser' pheromones, elicit an immediate behavioral response. Sex attractants are prominent examples of this group. While the chemical identity of these compounds is known, in a relatively few cases (and these, mainly in insects) we now have extensive information about their impact on the receiving organism at the receptor, physiologic and behavioral levels. 428 pp. Englisch.

Today, we often blame a doctor's absence of that awareness on moral or ethical deficiency either in medical education or in the character of people who become physicians. An alternative explanation, however, is that doctors are just as moral, ethical, and concerned as ever before, but that a vast amount of additional new information has won the competition for attention. The data available to the old-fashioned doctor were a patient's history, phys ical examination, and 'personal profile,' together with a limited number of generally ineffectual therapeutic agents. A doctor today deals with an enormous array of additional new information, which comes from X-rays, biopsies, cytology, electrographic tracings, and the phantas magoria of contemporary laboratory tests, and the doctor must also be aware of a list of therapeutic possibilities that are both far more effective and far more extensive than ever before. 488 pp. Englisch.

Most courses that are considered difficult by students are either poorly taught or require a degree of mathematical sophistication that the students do not possess. In Transport Analysis, I have culled some basic momentum transport (fluid flow) and mass transport phenomena and explicitly revealed the derivation of the governing equations. There is no mystery, no omitted steps or 'it can be shown' phrases that are usually the bane of the student. There are chapters that review basic calculus, vector and matrix concepts, Laplace transform operations, and finite difference calculus. Ordinary dif ferential and partial differential equations are derived and solved. This book is intended for undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, chemistry, physics, and even biology and medicine. It is also intended for my non-engineering colleagues with whom I have collaborated during our cooperative research in the life sciences. California. U.S.A . on March 20. 2] and 22, 1973. The symposium was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and was designed to bring together a group that represented the domi nant cross section of international research in this area. The idea for the conference originated as ONR recognized a potentially interesting area that, to date. had not had the benefit of a co ordinating symposium and/or a book published on the specific sub ject. In addition to the formal presentation of papers - informal open discussions followed - the symposium included two stimulating workshops. An abundance of impromptu exchange filled unscheduled periods. Many of the contributors have incorporated in their pa pers the ideas and points raised in discussions following formal presentation and at other times. The reader thus actually profits from the various discussions throughout the meeting. The two half-day workshops were directed toward the subjects of sampling and concentrating suspended materials and in situ in strumentation. I have summarized the discussions from the two workshops for the reader and have correlated the material wherever possible in an introductory chapter. I have also included intro ductory material to acquaint the newcomer with the general field. 332 pp. Englisch.

The specific objectives of the workshops were to: (1) define the state-of-the-art in research on perception of environmental quality and identify salient conceptual and methodological issues; (2) delineate potential uses of perceived environmental quality indices (PEQIs) and related issues regarding ways in which PEQIs might enhance implementation, revision, or refinement of policy orientations; (3) identify the types of research which would assess adequately the efficacy of the development and the application of PEQIs; and (4) out line a realistic, pragmatic research strategy that relates to potential uses and identified policy issues. The workshops were supported by 'a grant from the National Science Foundation, No. GSOC75-0782, and were held during the spring and summer of 1975 in Amherst, Massachusetts, and New York City. Contributed chapters for this volume were commissioned with funds from the Institute for Man and Environment, University of Massachusetts. Scientific contributors to the understanding of environmental per ception have increased substantially over the last decade, along with recognition that this realm of knowledge is crucial for an informed perspective on-the impact of man on the environment. At the same time, there exists general consensus that the field remains diffuse and uncoor dinated (Lowenthal, 1972b). 328 pp. Englisch.

To be sure, the highly developed countries of North America, Western Europe, Ja pan, and Australia have generally had well-known national psychological societies for most of this century, and consider able information about their universities and institutes has been published at one time or another. But even in these more highly developed countries, the rapid changes of recent years are not well known. In any event, what information has been published is scattered so widely that it is hardly accessible when needed. Still less well known is the growth of psychology in the developing countries of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, and at least for Western readers, even the modem nations of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are relatively unknown. Only recently have most Western psychologists become aware of the fact that psychology as they know it is provincial. With more than half of the world's highly trained psychologists in Canada and the United States, which together devote far more of their national resources to psychological research than is true of any other countries in the world, it is not surprising that the North American journals, psychological associations, institutes, clinics, and other manifestations of psychology have completely domi nated the field, at least until recently. 316 pp. Englisch.

New approaches to the overall problem have developed. Several chapters of the First Edition were not continued in this edition; most of those which were included have been revised thoroughly. A number of chapters by other contributors were invited to help round out the volume. New chapters are those by Glassman and Wilson; Squire and Barondes; Ungar; Jankovic; Hyden and Lange; Koenig; Appel; Rosenzweig, Bennett, and Diamond; and Deutsch. This edition should provide a representative view of the important research and theorizing which is occurring in this area. This volume is built around two important topics: Products of DNA Activa tion (Section II) and Macromolecules and Intracellular, Intercellular, and Synaptic Events (Section III). The Introduction (Section I) leads to these topics, and Models of Memory (Section IV) attempts to provide an integration of these topics with brain function. The preparation of this volume was facilitated by grants from the National Research Council (Canada) and by Contract No. Nom 4935(00) with the Physiological Psychology Division of the Office of Naval Research (U .S.A.) . 412 pp. Englisch.

Thus, a new name, psychopharmacogenetics, was coined to designate its contents. The necessity for such compilation of some of the major data has become increasingly urgent. For some time now, there has been available information dealing with pharmacogenetics and behavior genetics. Recently, with ever-increasing frequency, however, data have been accumulating that deal with the effects of specific drugs on behavior and behavioral responses in animals with known genetic background. Initially, the data were gathered in various species and in a number of strains within given species of animals. With the availability of mutations, inbred strains, segregating strains of various types, recombinant inbred strains and congenic lines, the experimental approach to psychopharmacogenetics has now reached a new peak of sophistication. This volume attempts to present some of the major experiments in this area, along with comprehensive sur vey of the status of a given drug. It is hoped that reading of the information that has been com piled herein will ultimately lead to a stimulus for further research in the areas outlined, as well as make the reader acquainted with new approaches to drug:behavior:genetic research. Refusal to admit the extent of alcoholism as a major national health problem leads to a public policy which allocates relatively few resources to research, prevention, treatment, or rehabilitation. On an individual basis, the combination of sodally approved drinking and the stigma assigned to the chronic alcoholic results in individuals blinding themselves to the existence of the problem in family, friend, and self until it has reached such an advanced or obvious degree that denial is no longer possible. There is the third kind of denial, exemplified by therapeutic de spair, which proclaims thatgaps in knowledge of the cause of alco holism are so great and failures to treat alcoholics successfully so dra matic that there is no assurance that efforts will lead to a positive outcome. This denial is perhaps the most troublesome because it re flects an attitude of therapeutic helplessness. It discourages families from seeking help, and it reinfOlces the tendency of physidans and other human-services workers to overlook the presence of alcoholism as they treat its physical, sodal, and economic consequences. Denial frequently surrounds those who treat alcoholics with an aura of hope lessness, which itself is a negative therapeutic force. 312 pp. Englisch.

I the concept of failure used in this study. Thereafter, we discuss briefly the causes and possible consequ ences of failure. Finally, we explain in Section 1. 2 the aim of this study. 1. 1 THE CONCEPT OF FAILURE. In this monograph we investigate the predictability of corporate failure. By 'failure' we understand the inability of a firm to pay its obligations when these fall due (i. e. technical cash insolvency). (Walter 1957 and Donaldson 1962 and 1969). Failure mostly appears in a critical situation as a consequ ence of a sharp decline in sales. Such a decline can be caused by a recession, the loss of an important customer, shortage of a raw material, deficiencies of management, etc. The ability to predict corporate failure is important for all parties involved in the corporation, in particular for management and investors. An early warning signal of probable failure will enable them to take preventive measures: changes in operating policy or reorganization of financial structure, but also voluntary liquidation will usually shorten the period over which losses are incurred. The possibility to predict failure is important also from a social point of view, because such an event is an indication of misallocation of resources; prediction provides opportunities to take corrective measures. (See also Lev 1974, p. 134). 1. 2 AIM AND OUTLINE OF THE STUDY. 132 pp. Englisch.

Following the evolvment of the initial principles and techniques during the closing decade of the last century, microwave engineering has long matured to a stage of ready availability of components, automation and accuracy of measurement, economical manufacturing methods, and application of sophisticated systems. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Hence, it is now practicable to consider a comprehensive treatment of these two fields, division being made by subject matter rather than by the artificial distinctions of frequency and/or wavelength ranges. However, a full text on the combined subjects would be very large and unwieldy and, thus, this Bibliography is presented in the hope that it will prove useful as a compact reference source to a large body of workers and, by putting forward the latest scientific and technical advances, stimulate a multi-disciplinary approach. The material of the book commences with the fundamentals of radiation and matter, progressing through components and devices, amplification and generation, transmission, reception and processing of information, and methods of measurement to conclude with a wide range of applications. 752 pp. Englisch.

However, some of them have found their way into the biosphere and have been classi fied as persistent toxic chemicals. This has resulted in serious concern about environmental contamination. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium 'Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides' was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. The symposium was held during the l37th National American Chemical Society Meeting at Los Angeles, California, during April, 1974. The three sessions in the sym posium were chai'red by Drs. V.H. Freed, D.G. Crosby, and R. Haque. 400 pp. Englisch.

This destructive and wasteful ability has increas~d dramatically over recent years. At the same time however the need for conservation, particularly of plants as a resource for the future, has also become apparent, along with the realisation that advanced technologies can produce more from existing agricultural and forest regions. This may to some extent relieve the heavy pressure on the vulnerable areas where short term over-exploitation leads to permanent destruction of whole ecosystems, and the attendant loss, for ever, of many of the animals and plants which originally lived there. There still remains today a vast number of plant species whose potential is unknown. Maybe they will never have more than aesthetic value to mankind. But who knows where, for example, the next anti cancer agent may be found. And anyway future generations may not be ready to accept such anthropocentric values, and the options should be kept open for the philosophical concept that all life on earth has a right to exist and that man has none to exterminate. 356 pp. Englisch.

Like the preceding meeting, it was jointly organised by the Chromatographic Society and the Robens Institute of the University of Surrey in response to the continued interest in this area of separation science. Of particular interest to the organisers was the very clear change in the nature of the delegates attending this second symposium as compared with the first. At the previous meeting the majority of the delegates were composed of chromatographers with problems in the area of chiral separations who were keen to learn as much as possible about these techniques from the handful of recognised experts in this area. In this second symposium the divide between expert and novice was much less apparent, with the latter providing many interesting and useful contributions to the scientific programme in termt; of both oral and poster presentations. 244 pp. Englisch.

His first widespread use of these natural materials in which their crystalline nature was of importance was undoubtedly in fabricating jewelry and otherwise adorning his weapons, tools, and household items. Both the Old and New Testa ments of the Bible document the use of crystalline gems, and the Romans are credited with first employing diamonds-a metastable crystalline form of carbon-in jewelry. Various civilizations appear to have ascribed magical powers to some natural crystals, and they are known to have been widely accepted in Europe as having medicinal properties during the Middle Ages. Given early man's appreciation of the symmetry and beauty of natural crystals, it is not surprising that his earliest interest in working with these materials appears to have been directed toward techniques for duplicating or manufacturing these sub stances that were so highly valued as gems. Although the exact beginning of the science that we now know as 'crystal growth' cannot be precisely specified, we do know that Robert Boyle had attempted to grow crystals that could be used as gems prior to 1672. Much later, in 1873, M. A. 276 pp. Englisch.
