Our justification is based upon our effort to concentrate the symposium upon a single area in which he has had an extended involvement: namely, the metamorphic molt in flies. In so doing, we immediately recognized the enormous humoral and physiological ramifications, both direct and indirect, of such an interest. Our selection of these papers is an attempt to present the broad picture with a few quick strokes. The first offering, by J. H. Willis, et al., is a direct outgrowth of Fraenkel's work with Rudall on the chemistry of the puparium. Their investigations on the structure of fly cuticle and its changes at pupariation (Fraenkel and Rudall, 1940, Proc. Roy. Soc. London (~) 129:1; 1947, ibid, 134:111), provided quanti tative data which have, since that time, influenced our ideas con cerning cuticular changes at metamorphosis and are presently at the center of the controversy over the mechanism of cuticular hardening and darkening (see Hillerton and Vincent, 1979, l. The first radiopharmaceutical selected for study was 67-Gallium (67-Ga) administered as the citrate. The object of the study was to de termine the usefulness of 67-Ga in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various malignancies. Funding for the project was granted by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission and the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Nuclear Medicine Department of the Clinical Center, NIH, agreed to assist ORAU with aspects of this study, particularly with 67-Ga scin tigraphy of patients with lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. Pre liminary reports from the ORAU study are in press. Since April 1971, 67-Ga scintigraphy has gained increasing use in the study of cancer patients at the Clinical Center, NIH, where well over 1000 such patients have been examined by this method. This monograph was written to present selected examples from this group of a variety of malignancies seen in this 28-month period. No attempt has been made to correlate this overall experience statistically. Rather, this presentation is to help familiarize the practitioner of Nuclear Medicine with the wide range of usefulness for 67-Ga scintigraphy while making him aware of the variation in scan appearance and watchful of the many pitfalls of 67-Ga scan interpretation. Permission to use these patient studies and x-rays was generously granted by Dr. Paul P. 244 pp. Englisch.

The meeting was held under the auspices of the Ecosciences Panel of the N.A.T.O. Science Committee, and the organising expenses and greater part of the expenses of the speakers and chairmen were provided by N.A.T.O. The scientific programme was planned by M. W. Holdgate and M. J. Woodman, in consultation with numerous colleagues, and especially with the Administrative Director of the Conference in Iceland, Dr. Sturla Fridriksson. Iceland proved a particularly suitable location for such a Conference. Geologically, it is one of the youngest countries 1n the world, owing its origin to the up-welling of volcanic rock along the spreading zone of the mid-Atlantic ridge within the past 20 million years. Its structure, northern oceanic situation, recent glaciation and continuing volcanic activity make it distinct as a habitat and have given it a flora and fauna of especial interest. It is also a land of great natural beauty with its ice caps, waterfalls, volcanic landforms, geothermal features and dramatic coasts. In addition, its ecosystems have proved except ionally vulnerable to man's impact and it presents the kind of problem with which the Conference was concerned in an acute form. 512 pp. Englisch.

The high resolving power of the technique and its unique ability to separate as well as concentrate have been amply demonstrated in several international symposia. The past few years have led to the wide acceptance of standardized methodologies for analytical and preparative purposes. These procedures afford rapid, reproducible separations that have led to a dramatic increase in our under standing of many areas of biological and biomedical research. Conse quently, we considered it desirable to review some of the important appli cations of the isoelectric focusing technique. To accomplish this, we have solicited the participation of noted authorities to highlight major progress in their fields of expertise. Thus, the material in this book will emphasize recent advances in knowledge rather than methodological aspects, except when special procedures are reviewed. Nicholas Catsimpoolas James W. This growth has been caused by advances in psychological testing (such as the Halstead-Reitan neuropsychological battery, as discussed in Chapter 5) that have made evaluation techniques in the field available to a wider audience, by advances in neuroradiol ogy and related medical areas that have enabled us to better understand the struc ture and function of the brain in living individuals without significant potential harm to those individuals, and by increased interest by psychologists and other scientists in the role that the brain plays in determining behavior. Many disorders that were believed by many to be caused purely by learning or environment have been shown to relate, at least in some cases, to brain dysfunction or damage. With the growth of the field, there has been increased interest in the work of neuropsychologists by many who are not in the field. 524 pp. Englisch.

The motivation that drove us to organize this meeting was the feeling that distinct groups of researchers, active in key areas of modern immunology, sometimes fail to communicate with each other simply because of different traditional affiliations. Yet it is urgent that 'molecular' and 'cellular' people cooperate more if immunology is to continue the exportation of new concepts to other disciplines. In fact, the deep meaning of molecule-molecule and cell-cell interaction, the generation of signals and their effective transmission which results in elicitation, control or suppression of responses cannot be unraveled without the experts on antibody structure or complement activation sharing their views with the experts on T cell, B cell and macrophage membrane receptors as well as the experts on factors that carry the information released by these cells. Whether the meeting was scientifically fruitful, the reader can judge after having digested these pages. We, the organizers, are not sure whether the optimal amount of interaction had taken place; especially considering how hard it is to overcome the scientist's catch 22: You have to know something quite well before you get really interested in it. In any event, we are convinced that Portovenere was one of the most successful attempts we have witnessed. 524 pp. Englisch.

Cooks This introduction has three purposes: (a) to summarize some of the chief features of energy spectrometry of ions and to sketch in a little of the background to this subject, (b) to present some simple facts about collision processes which one skilled in, say, mass spectrometry but innocent of any knowledge of bimolecular collisions might find of value, and (c) to indicate the scope and content of the volume. 1. The Subject This book takes as its subject, ion-molecule and ion-atom reactions occurring at high energies. It emphasizes the study of inelastic reactions at high energy through measurements of translational energy. The investiga tion of these reactions using other procedures has been important in the cases of the simpler systems. In particular, the emitted radiation has been investigated and this subject is therefore discussed where appropriate. For more complex species, however, there is little information available other than from energy spectra. The defining characteristic of the energy range of interest is that momentum transfer to the neutral target is negligible for small scattering angles. The result of this apparently bland condition is a welcome simplicity in the interpretation of the results of what appears to be developing into a R. G. An exposition is given of ordinary, generalized, two- and three-stage estimates for regression analysis, the method of principal components being applied for factor analysis. When establishing an econometric model, the two ways of analysis complement each other. The model was realized as part of the 'Interplay' research project concerning the economies of the European Common Market countries at the Econometrics Department of the Tilburg School of Economics. The Interplay project aims at: a. elaborating more or less uniformly defined and estimated models; b. clarifying the economic structure and the economic policy possible with the linked models of the European Community countries. Besides the model for the Netherlands published here, the models for Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom are ready for linking and for publishing later on. The econometric model presented in this book and upon which the Interplay model is based comprises eleven structural and twenty-one definitional equations; it is estimated with ordinary, two- and three-stage least squares. The analysis of the model is directed at eliminating multicollinearity, accor ding to D.E. Farrar's and R. Glauber's method. In practice, however, complete elimination of multicollinearity leads to an exclusion of certain relations which is not entirely satisfactory. Economic relations can be dealt with more fully by analyzing the variables involved in detail by factor analysis. In this study factor analysis is also a suitable method for a comparative analysis of different periods. 252 pp. Englisch.

Furthermore, when we consulted published EMF data, we found that the compilations often paid no attention to disparate conditions and varying pressures and electrolyte concentrations. To achieve a useful compilation, we resorted to Nernst equation thermodynamic calculations to reconcile disparate data. These fundamental advantages are indicated by the enormous research effort which has gone into their development over the last decade and by the number of commercial systems which have become available. Although the field is still developing, the most important theoretical results required for relating the system outputs to the fluid flow parameters have now been formulated and a book on the subject therefore seems timely. In the text we have tried to collect together the most important results both from our own papers and from publications by other authors and to present these in a concise and easily readable form. Emphasis has been placed on the fundamental theory and limitations associated with the various techniques rather than on detailed description of specific systems. We have also included a number of new results on areas such as photon counting in turbulent and periodic flows, frequency domain and time domain analysis of laser Doppler velocimeter signals, effect of background noise on system performance, and on cross-correlation techniques for diffusing flows. 308 pp. Englisch.

Consequently this mono graph can be viewed as an introduction to texts where these subjects are treated. 152 pp. Englisch.

This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field. 576 pp. Englisch.

The initial conception for a light scattering seminar of about fifty scientists - half from each side, including theorists and experimenters 'well versed in theory' - arose from discussions between Professor J. L. Birman and Professor K. K. Rebane at the 1971 Paris International Conference on Light Scattering in Solids. This conception won approval among the active scientists on both sides. After considerable planning and some delays, it received both material support and encouragement from the appro priate organizations on each side: in the USA: The National Science Foundation (Division of International Programs), and the National Academy of Sciences; in the USSR: the Academy of Sciences USSR. A variety of reasons contributed to the positive response on both sides: for example, the considerable and high level of theoretical and experimental scientific activity on both sides in laser-related light scattering, optics, and generally - electro dynamics of condensed media - some along rather similiar lines; the impediments to free and easy communication and travel be tween USA and USSR scientists working on related problems; plus the desire to improve both contacts, and the free flow of informa tion and individuals, to the mutual advantage of both sides. 568 pp. Englisch.

This was the 28th syposium in aseries which the Research Laboratories began sponsor ing in 1957. Each symposium has focused on a topic that is both under active study at the Research Laboratories and is also of interest to the larger technical community. Solid modeling is still a very young research area, young even when com pared with other computer-related research fields. Ten years ago, few people recognized the importance of being able to create complete and unambiguous computer models of mechanical parts. Today there is wide recognition that computer representations of solids are aprerequisite for the automation of many engineering analyses and manufacturing applications. In September 1983, the time was ripe for a symposium on this subject. Re search had already demonstrated the efficacy of solid modeling as a tool in computer automated design and manufacturing, and there were significant re suIts wh ich could be presented at the symposium. Yet the field was still young enough that we could bring together theorists in solid modeling and practition ers applying solid modeling to other research areas in a group sm all enough to allow a stimulating exchange of ideas. 400 pp. Englisch.
