This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -To spite a national trend toward renovation, restoration, and remodeling, construction products producers and their associations are not universally eager to publish recommendations for repairing or extending existing materials. There are two major reasons. First, there are several possible applications of most building materials; and there is an even larger number of different problems that can occur after products are installed in a building. Thus, it is difficult to produce recommendations that cover every eventuality. Second, it is not always in a building construction product producer's best interest to publish data that will help building owners repair their product. Producers, whose income derives from selling new products, do not necessarily applaud when their associations spend their money telling architects and building owners how to avoid buying their products. Finally, in the Building Renovation and Restoration Series we have a reference that recognizes that problems frequently occur with materials used in building projects. In this book and in the other books in this series, xv xvi Series Foreword Simmons goes beyond the promotional hyperbole found in most product literature and explains how to identify common problems. He then offers informed 'inside' recommendations on how to deal with each of the problems. Each chapter covers certain materials, or family of materials, in a way that can be understood by building owners and managers, as well as construction and design professionals. 436 pp. Englisch.

William Osler, The Student Life What follows is a collection of cases-or more aptly, the stories of our patients and friends who have been seen at The Ohio State University Hospitals where our faculty have provided their care and about whom this volume is written. Today many fear that our patients are being moved from center stage while we are being distracted by the technology of medicine. This volume was written with patients in mind. The idea is that the most intriguing questions and the most rewarding answers begin and end at the bedside. This is a story of our patients, told by expert clinicians and spiced with commentary along the way. This volume in no way at tempts to be comprehensive. Instead, it is like the practice of medicine, scattered, somewhat disjointed, while at the same time intensely personal and focused upon whatever problem the patient brings to us. The discussions are not so much about disease entities as they are about patients with problem'. The two are uniquely dif ferent. For instance, when the physician suspects hepatitis, not every imaginable cause can be actively investigated. Instead, tests and procedures are discriminate ly chosen, a part of medicine that is still more art than science. 336 pp. Englisch.

The first report of neurological complications of leukemia was in 1823 by Burnsl. Before leukemia chemotherapy, there had been only sporadic and relatively few case reports. However, since 1948, the incidence of meningeal leukemia has increased to where it is now one of the most frequent complications of the disease. This review will discuss in depth the pathology, clinical characteristics, and results of treatment of meningeal leukemia. An attempt will be made to assess the relative values of different modes of therapy and suggest new ones in light of animal studies and theoretical models for meningeal leukemia, and to define what parameters are necessary in evaluating the results of therapy, which would be helpful in future studies. This is especially cogent since many of the more recent chemotherapy proto cols are utilizing combinations of radiotherapy and intrathecal therapy both in treatment of meningeal leu kemia and as prophylaxis against its development. 144 pp. Englisch.

We treat energy as a multidisciplinary challenge and apply the standard tools of economists, physicists, engineers, policy analysts, and, some might claim, fortune tellers. We hope that it will be used in classrooms of various types, and read by the general reader as well. That increased energy efficiency should be the first priority of energy policymakers is a conclusion, not an assumption, of our analysis. Many analysts have arrived at this conclusion while working separately on energy supply problems. The magnitude and scope of supply problems, primarily problems of high prices and environmental costs, lead one inexorably back to reducing demand growth as the first, most important step in any plausible energy future. We examine, in some depth, why much of the past literature on energy still points, fallaciously in our opinion, to high energy c- v Preface vi sumption futures. This is in Part I (called 'A Short History of the Future'). We devote one-third of the book (Part II) to energy resources, their internal and external costs, and the quantities of energy to be derived from these resources. This analysis provides a context within which the economic and social value of energy conservation options can be assessed. 276 pp. Englisch.

The topic of the symposium was Mechanisms in Recombination and it follows by exactly twenty years the previous Gatlinburg Symposium on Genetic Recombination. During this interval, and the preceding years as well, the process of recombination has remained a central and tantalizing problem for geneticists. The subject assumes added significance with the recent appeal by a committee of leading scientists for a moratorium on the construction of certain types of recombinant molecules. That autonomously replicating molecules linking portions of pro karyotic and eukaryotic DNA can now be produced in vitro attests to the technical advances that have taken place in this field. Nevertheless, the details underlying the process in vivo continue to be elusive. This symposium brought together individuals studying recombi nation in organisms as widely separated as bacteriophage and mammals and using disciplinary approaches of comparable diversity. Conse quently the present volume summarizes much of current strategies and concepts concerning the subject. The meeting was sponsored by the Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (operated by the Union Carbide Corporation for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission) with the support and encour agement of its director, H. I. Adler. The organizing committee was chaired by J. K. Setlow and included R. F. Grell, R. D. Hotchkiss and E. Because the outcome of these studies has deep, personal interest for many parents and their children, I have tried to present the studies in such a way that the logic and evidence of the studies is com prehensible to informed adults interested in weighing the facts for themselves. Unfortunately, the facts do not always follow a straightfor ward course. Part of my purpose has been to show the complexities lying in the way of the answers to apparently simple questions. I believe it is healthy and important for parents to examine the scientific evidence on issues affecting their daily lives, and to become aware of the process of research surrounding controversial claims regarding new therapies. New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. She should however, know some of the major pitfalls in coming to a conclusion for or against such a course. 188 pp. Englisch.

The rapidly increasing interest in surface and colloid science by people engaged in industrial research and development, and in environmental, ecological, medical, pharmaceutical, and other areas, justifies the continuation of such an effort. After nine volumes with John Wiley and Sons, this and subsequent volumes will-by mutual consent-be published by Plenum Press. The editor will do his best to maintain and, if possible, improve the quality of the contributions. While the fundamental philosophy will be preserved, some moderate graphical changes have taken place. These changes were done to enhance the readability and uniformity of the volumes. Occasionally, volumes may appear under the editorship of other scientists in the field. These volumes will be mainly devoted to techniques in surface and colloid science. For reasons of continuity a sequential numbering system will be used. 324 pp. Englisch.

The analytical chemist is under constant pressure not only from the research chemist whose sampIes he must characterize and control, but also from an ever-increasing group of governmental agencies stimulated by public concern over health and environmental problems, to determine the most sophisticated kinds of compounds as lower and lower levels. The subjects covered in these papers are wide-ranging, from the analysis of incinerator effluents to the determination of drugs in blood, but through them runs a common theme, the appli cation of the latest instrumental techniques to the problems of analysis. The authors show how successful they have been in rising to the analytical challenges pre sented by an increasingly complex world. The School was a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The aim of this international course was a compre hensive discussion by experts in various disciplines of the present status of our knowledge of the biological role of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. The synthesis, metabolism, and function of prosta glandins have been evaluated at the cellular level, in isolated tissues, and/or in the intact organism. The mode of action of prostaglandins and their interactions, particularly with cyclic nucleotides, in normal and pathological conditions, has been discussed with the aim of understanding the possible role of these compounds in hormonal regulation and cell response. The prostaglandin biosynthetic capacity of different tissues, under various experimental conditions, in the presence of specific precursors, and the inhibitory ac tivity of different agents have been examined to ascer tain the relationship between function and metabolism. For these reasons the discussion has also been extended to the methods (biological, immunological, and spectrometric) available for the direct and specific determination of prostaglandins and the evaluation of their synthesis and metabolism. The Editors hope that the book will be useful both to beginners and to those with a long-time interest in prostaglandins. F. Berti B. Samuelsson G. P. The present institute was intended to provide a forum for discussion of the importance of nonlinear phenomena associated with instabilities in systems as seemingly disparate as ferroelectrics and rotating buckets of oil. Ten years ago, at the first Geilo school, the report of a central peak in the fluctuation spectrum of SrTi0 close to its 3 106 K structural phase transition demonstrated that the simple soft-mode theory of such transitions was incomplete. The missing ingredient was the essential nonlinearity of the system. Parti cipants at this year's Geilo school heard assessments of a decade of experimental and theoretical effort which has been expended to elucidate the nature of this nonlinearity. The importance of order ed clusters and the walls which bound them was stressed in this con text. A specific type of wall, the soliton, was discussed by a number of speakers. New experimental results which purport to demonstrate the existence of solitons in a one-dimensional ferromagnet were presented. A detailed discussion was given of the role of solitons in transport phenomena in driven multistable systems, typified by a sine-Gordon chain. 496 pp. Englisch.

Written at the graduate level, it attempts a threefold purpose: an indication of the breadth of the subject, an in-depth examination of important areas, and a text for a two-semester course. The first two chapters present introductory theory as a foundation for subsequent reading. The following ten chapters broadly concern electronic properties associated with semiconductors ranging from narrow to wide energy gap materials. Lattice properties are examined in the remaining chap ters, in which effects governed by phonons in perfect crystals, point defects, their vibrational and electronic spectra, and electron-phonon interactions are stressed. Fun and hard work, both in considerable measure, have gone into the preparation of this volume. At the University of Freiburg, W. Germany, from August 7-20, 1966, the occasion of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'The Optical Properties of Solids,' the authors of these various chapters lectured for the Institute; this volume provides essentially the 'Proceed ings' of that meeting. Many major revisions of original lectures (contrac tions and enlargements) were required for better organization and presentation of the subject matter. Several abbreviated chapters appear mainly to indicate the importance of their contents in optical properties research and to indicate recently published books that provide ample coverage. We are indebted to many people: the authors for their efforts and patience; our host at the University of Freiburg, the late Professor Dr. 656 pp. Englisch.

Volume 2 now extends this emphasis to semiconductors. The first four chapters treat in some detail the creation, kinetic behavior, inter actions, and physical properties of both simple and composite defects in a variety of semiconducting systems. Also included, as in Vol. 1, are chapters on special topics, namely phonon-defect interactions and defects in organic crystals. Defect behavior in semiconductors has been a subject of considerable interest since the discovery some twenty-five years ago that fast neutron irradiation profoundly affected the electrical characteristics of germanium and silicon. Present-day interest has been stimulated by such semiconductor applications as solar cell power plants for space stations and satellites and semiconductor particle and y-ray detectors, since in both radiation damage can cause serious deterioration. Of even greater practical concern is the need to understand particle damage in order to capitalize upon the develop ing technique of ion implantation as a means of device fabrication. Although the periodic international conferences on radiation effects in semiconductors have served the valuable function of summarizing the extensive work being done in this field, these proceedings are much too detailed and lack the background discussion needed to make them useful to the novice. 500 pp. Englisch.

The motivation for the conference was, in a large part due to the recent development of new variable energy accelerators which produce high quality beams of electrons, protons, and pions that are providing the first precise information on spin excitations in nuclei over a large range of spin and mass. In the past such data had been restricted primarily to light nuclei and were generally resolution limited. Perhaps, the most exciting new result has been the clear observation of the elusive spin-dipole strength (Gamow Teller and Ml) in medium and heavy mass nuclei through the use of the (p,n) and (p,p') reactions at or near zero degrees with 100-200 MeV incident protons. Energy dependence in the isovector parts of the nucleon-nucleon interaction make the 100-200 MeV energy region particularly appropriate for such studies. The clean data from (e,e'), ('IT,'IT'), (p,p'), and (p,n) on high spin 'stretched' states which have particularly simple structure has also been quite impor tant. The recent results contain important new information on the nature of the spin dependent forces in nuclei. These in turn are inherently related to the properties of the nuclear mesonic field and the underlying quantum chromodynamics. 676 pp. Englisch.

The Twentieth Annual Denver X-ray Conference reflects this renewed interest in several ways. The invited papers, grouped in Session I, review the charac teristics of the detectors used in the measurement of x-rays. One paper is dedicated to the detection of single io.ns. Although such a subject may appear to be marginal to the purposes of the Denver Conference, we must recognize the affinity of techniques applied to similar purposes. Ion probe mass spectrometry is dedicated to tasks similar to those performed by x-ray spectrometry with the electron probe microanalyzer. Scientists and technologists will see these two techniques discussed in the same meetings. The discussion of automation and programming is not limited to the two invited speakers, but extends to papers presented in more than one session. The matter of fluorescence analysis by isotope- and tube-excitation will also be of great interest to those concerned with the practical applications of x-ray techniques. The communications contained in this volume, and the lively discussions which frequently followed the presentation of papers, attest to the vitality of the subjects which are the concern of the Annual Denver X-ray Conference. 588 pp. Englisch.

However, cells that clearly are incapable of carrying out mammalian type immune functions can exhibit exquisite specificity in their capacity to discriminate among syngeneic, allogeneic, and xenogeneic cells. In this volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology we have chosen to consider the general problem of self/non-self discrimination as it is manifest in recognition reactions of plants and invertebrates and in the evolutionary development of the immune response of vertebrates. A broad, many-faceted approach is taken toward fundamental issues in immunobiology in order to develop innovative concepts of receptor function as well as to delineate traditional views. The capacity of plants to discriminate between self and non-self is addressed in Chapter 1 by R. B. Knox and Adrienne E. Clarke. These authors provide examples of cell-cell recognition in plants that parallel those occurring in in vertebrates and vertebrates. In general, tolerance (acceptance) of grafts is re stricted to plants within closely related genera. Recognition is mediated by callus cells, which proliferate at wound surfaces in higher plants, and there is a correlation between cell and tissue type and antigenic markers detectable with the use of mammalian antibodies. Certain flowering plants exhibit precise discrimination in fertilization, when pollen must be from the same species, but fertilization occurs only if the pollen is genetically non-self. 312 pp. Englisch.

For example, as a result of effective cardiac surgery in childhood, congential heart disease is now found with increasing frequency in adults and not exceptionally in persons over 65 years of age. The frequency of aortic valve replacement for calcific congenital valve stenosis in subjects around 70 years of age illustrates the intrusion of congenital heart disease into the older age range. Thus, the publica tion of Cardiology in Old Age will be especially welcome at this time. The Editors have assembled a formidable galaxy of experts to present the special problems of epidemiology, pathology, cardiovascu lar physiology and function, and of specific cardiac disorders in the elderly. The chapter on cardiac surgery is particularly appropriate to many current problems. The whole subject must be of growing concern to all clinicians and health workers who have increasingly to deal with older patients who have cardiovascular disorders. Knowledge of the effects of aging on the cardiovascular system is therefore of great interest and the information given in this book undoubtedly will be of value to general physicians and cardiologists, who may be expected in the future to work more closely with geriatricians in the care of the elderly. Continuing research into the problems of aging is clearly also of great importance especially in the field of cardiovascular medicine. 432 pp. Englisch.

As in the case of the first ASI, our aim was to bring together a small group of promising young ex perimenters and several outstanding senior scholars in high energy physics in order to learn about the latest trends in the field and develop stronger contacts among scientists from different countries and different backgrounds. The setting at Roaring Brook was particularly congenial and the staff, under the direction of George Green, was both friendly and efficient. The ASI was supported mainly through funds provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, the National Science Founda tion and the University of Rochester. A special grant from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided a valuable degree of flexibility for supporting worthy students. The scientific program of this ASI was, once again, designed primarily for advanced graduate students and recent Ph.D recipients in experimental particle physics. I believe, however, that the contents of the present volume will prove useful to an even wider audience of physicists. 372 pp. Englisch.

Coupled with speculation about the magnitude and extent of the problem is discussion of needs for predictive testing and regulatory control measures. The first international seminar on the immunological system as a target for toxic damage was held in Luxembourg in 1984. It was organized by the International Programme on Chemical Safety (United Nations Environment Programme-International Labour Office World Health Organization) and the Commission of the European Communities with the support of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (USA) and the participation of the International Society of Immunopharmacology. In view of the perceived importance of imrnunotoxicity, it was considered necessary to organize a follow-up meeting. Thus, an international workshop on the immunotoxicity of metals and immuno toxicology was held in Hanover, Federal Republic of Germany, on 6-10 November 1989. 332 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A wealth of information has been accumulated about the function of ion channels of excitable cells since the extensive and pioneering voltage clamp studies by Hodgkin, Huxley, and Katz 36 years ago. The study of ion chan nels has now reached a stage at which a quantum jump in progress is antici pated. There are many good reasons for this. Patch clamp techniques origi nally developed by Neher and Sakmann 12 years ago have made it possible to study the function of ion channels in a variety of cells. Membrane ionic currents can now be recorded practically from many types of cells using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. The opening and closing of individual ion channels can be analyzed using the single-channel patch clamp method. Techniques have also been developed to incorporate purified ion channels into lipid bilayers to reconstitute an 'excitable membrane. ' Advanced tech niques developed in molecular biology, genetics, and immunology, such as gene cloning and the use of monoclonal antibodies, are now being applied to the study of ion channels. A variety of drugs have now been found or are suspected to interact with ion channels to exert therapeutic effects. In addition to the classical exam ples, as represented by local anesthetics, many other drugs, including cal cium antagonists, psychoactive drugs, cardiac drugs, and anticonvulsants, shown to alter ion channel function. For certain pesticides such as have been pyrethroids and DDT, sodium channels are clearly the major target site. 352 pp. Englisch.

We were fortunate to have with us in Oak Ridge Dr. Niyogi and Dr. Mitra from Indian universities. Their close ties with the Bose Institute in Calcutta and the resultant correspondence with the Institute Director, Dr. S. M. Sircar, provided the stimulus for organization of this first Indian symposium, which was held in Calcutta. Under the direction of Dr. Sircar, Dr. B. B. Biswas did an outstandingjob of organizing this conference. Financial support was arranged through Dr. R. R. Ronkin of the United States National Science Foundation, who smoothed the way for the use of PL 480 funds which were approved by the Indian Government for the organization and running of this most valuable symposium. The many Indian scientists who contributed papers and enthusiastically and vigorously entered into the discussions demonstrated the strength of modern science in India. The topic, Control of Transcription, is a timely one, and considerable activity in this area is going on all over the world. The success of this symposium speaks well for the future of these Indian conferences and workshops being planned for the next few years. Again, the worldwide 'community of science' is clearly manifested by the close cooperation we have observed in this fruitful and successful symposium. 448 pp. Englisch.

Its small mass and strong interaction with the host electrons and nuclei are responsible for many anomalous and interesting solid state effects. In addition, hydrogen in metals gives rise to a number of technological problems such as hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage, radiation hardening, first wall problems associated with nuclear fusion reactors, and degradation of the fuel cladding in fission reactors. Both the fundamental effects and applied problems have stimulated a great deal of inter est in the study of metal hydrogen systems in recent years. This is evident from a growing list of publications as well as several international conferences held in this field during the past decade. It is clear that a fundamental understanding of these problems re quires a firm knowledge of the basic interactions between hydrogen, host metal atoms, intrinsic lattice defects and electrons. This understanding is made particularly difficult by hyrogen's small mass and by the large lattice distortions that accompany the hydrogenation process. The purpose of the 'International Symposium on the Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals' held in Richmond, Virginia, March 4-6, 1982 was to increase our fundamental under standing of hydrogen in metals. Such knowledge is essential in solving technologically important questions. The symposium con sisted of twenty-two invited papers and seventy-two contributed poster presentations and attracted nearly 150 participants from thirteen countries. The proceedings of this symposium constitute this book. 720 pp. Englisch.

It has also been made more useful by the growth and improvement of the data collection available as reference standards. In recent years some attempts have been made to use the method to a greater extent by furnishing results on a quantitative basis. This has proved to be difficult because of the problem of comparing the relative intensities of the diffraction peaks from one phase to another. This year the initial session of invited papers focuses primarily on this problem. The subject is approached both by the use of internal comparison standards and by calculation of intensities. In addition, the identification of crystalline phases by X-ray diffraction of single crystals is discussed in an invited paper. This method, with its advantages of the use of very small samples, is becoming increasingly feasible because of the development of simple equipment and the avail ability of a growing data bank. Other X-ray diffraction developments discussed at the Conference include stress analysis, use of computers for searching the JCPDS powder diffraction file, texture analysis, and applications to specific fields. Spectroscopy topics covered at the conference included a discussion of methods of concentration of materials for fluorescence analysis, soft X-ray spectra, and equipment for fluorescence analysis. 624 pp. Englisch.

Zener, then Director of Science at Westinghouse Corpora tion, and a member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences who has made important contributions to physics and engineering, published a short article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences entitled' A Mathe matical Aid in Optimizing Engineering Design. ' In this article Zener considered the problem of finding an optimal engineering design that can often be expressed as the problem of minimizing a numerical cost function, termed a 'generalized polynomial,' consisting of a sum of terms, where each term is a product of a positive constant and the design variables, raised to arbitrary powers. He observed that if the number of terms exceeds the number of variables by one, the optimal values of the design variables can be easily found by solving a set of linear equations. Furthermore, certain invariances of the relative contribution of each term to the total cost can be deduced. The mathematical intricacies in Zener's method soon raised the curiosity of R. J. Duffin, the distinguished mathematician from Carnegie Mellon University who joined forces with Zener in laying the rigorous mathematical foundations of optimizing generalized polynomials. Interes tingly, the investigation of optimality conditions and properties of the optimal solutions in such problems were carried out by Duffin and Zener with the aid of inequalities, rather than the more common approach of the Kuhn-Tucker theory. 472 pp. Englisch.

The In stitute was sponsored by NATO. Co-sponsors were: Agfa-Gevaert N.V. (Mortsel - Belgium), Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. (Antwerp Belgium), the National Science Foundation (Washington D.C. - U.S.A.) and the University of Antwerp (U.I.A.). A total of 120 lecturers and participants attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the description of the elementary excitations of the elec tronic and vibrational systems and their interactions. Parallel with this, the experimentalists have obtained outstanding re sults, partly as a result of availability of coherent light sour ces from the far infrared through the visible region, and partly because of the availability of synchrotron radiation sources in the soft X-ray region. The results of today will lead to fur ther progress over the next years. It was the purpose of this NATO Advanced Study Institute to present astate of the art, namely a survey of experiment and theory. 392 pp. Englisch.
