To achieve these goals will require the knowledgeable collaboration of biologists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians, and physicists; because photobiology is a truly multidisciplinary science. While a multidis ciplinary science is more intellectually demanding, it also has a greater potential for unexpected breakthroughs that can occur when data from several areas of science are integrated into new concepts for theoretical or practical use. Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews continues to provide in depth coverage of the many specialty areas of photobiology. It is hoped that these reviews will provide an important service to the younger scientists in the field and to senior scientists in related fields, because they provide a ready access to the recent literature in the field, and more importantly, they frequently offer a critical evaluation of the direction that the field is taking, or suggest a redirection when appropriate. Since it is important that this review series remain responsive to the needs of photochemists and photobiologists, the Editor would value com ments and suggestions from its readers. 328 pp. Englisch.

This book contains lhe papers and discussions of that symposium, the 26th in an annual series covering many different disciplines which are timely and of interest to both General Motors and the technical community at large. The subject of this symposium has considerable relevance for man in his effort to control and preserve his environment. Emission of particulate carbon into the atmos phere from combustion sources is of concern to scientists and laymen alike. The hope of reducing this emission clearly requires an understanding of its formation during the combustion process, itself an area of considerable long-term research interest. It is our hope that this symposium has served to summarize what is known so that what remains to be learned can be pursued with greater vigor. 516 pp. Englisch.

The first one took place on Mallorca during the summer 1969. The aim of the school was mainly to direct the interest of professors and students of Spanish Universities tow~rds this concrete field of re search. For this purpose 55 ~specially prepared lectures were given by an eminent collection of lecturers. Besides, a school of this class contri butes to the scientific formation of many students from other countries. Also, in a meeting of this kind, personal contacts are born that favour future co~laboration between scientists. In view of the success of the first two schools, we intend to foster future international meetings on this subject until interest in it is consolidated in Spain. All the lectures given are published here except those of Professor P.C. Martin whose lec tures have previously been published. I would like to thank all those people who helped to make this school a success, and in particular: Prof. J.L. Villar-Palasi, Minister of Educa tion of Spain for sponsoring the school. Dr. R. Diez-Hochleitner, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for receiving the project of this school with such enthusiasm. v PREFACE Prof. E.Costa-Novella, Director General of Universities in Spain and Dr. F.Arias-Salgado who showed such interest and patience while assuring the necessary finance would be found for the school. 488 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -There are two now classic reasons for the widespread and con tinuing interest in the phylogeny of immune reactivities and structure. First is the fundamental concern of biologists with the evolution of defense mechanisms. We are eager to discover origins, mechanisms, and adaptive specializations of immunocompetence because the very existence of individuals and entire species is involved in a most essential way. Second is the strong biomedical interest in adaptive immune mechanisms to increase understanding of health and disease in man. If man and placental mammals represent the quin tessence of immunoresponsiveness with complex interdependent path ways, the less elaborate but fully functional systems of immunity in 'lower' animals proffer insights applicable to immediate con cerns in medicine. Recent approaches to organ transplantation, immunotherapy of cancer and repair of immunodeficiency diseases, to name just a few areas, have depended greatly on phylogenetic per spectives. In a larger sense, intelligent wildlife conservation, utilization of food resources, and adequate environmental protection all hinge on knowing how diverse species survive or otherwise suc cumb to insults, injuries, and disease. The phylogenetic immunologist also seeks detailed information on the structure of the immunoglobulins which relates directly to the evolutionary history of living animals. Perhaps genetic mech anisms responsible for the evolution of these proteins may be re vealed as spin-off information. The vast number of immunoglobulin specificities and effector structures, coupled with the remarkable phylogenetic conservation of certain polypeptide regions, makes these molecules especially useful to protein chemists as well as immunologists. 504 pp. Englisch.

Hence, the book is divided conceptually into the following categories: nonhuman primates, hunters and gatherers, nomads, swidden agriculturalists, peas ant farmers, religious isolates, and modern and urban aggregates. While many of these populations have experienced (and are experiencing) ac culturation as a result of contact with technologically more advanced groups, the genetic structures described in this volume attempt to recon struct the traditional patterns as well as genetic changes because of con tact. Most chapters also integrate biological (genetic), social, and de mographic data within an ecological frame thus presenting a holistic view of the population structures of ecologically distinct groups. The first chapter examines the body of early nonhuman primate lit erature that emphasized ecological determinism in effecting the popula tion structure of our primate ancestors-relatives. It also examines more recent literature (since 1970) in which it became apparent that greater flexibility exists in primate social structure within specific environmental frameworks. Thus, it appears that our nonhuman primate evolutionary heritage is not one of ecological determinism in social organization but one of flexibility and rapid change suggesting the evolutionary success of our species is based upon a system of flexibility and that social ad aptations can be accomplished in a number of diverse ways. 544 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume was designed as a text for medical students, house officers, and even clinicians. It deals with the most common problems in nephrology, providing new insight into how to improve clinical skills. A comprehensive overview of renal physiology and electrolyte disorders lays the groundwork for a clear presentation of the pathophysiological principles that underlie these disorders and a step-by-step presentation of the mechanisms behind the signs and symptoms of kidney failure. The origins of this book can be traced to the teaching of a Renal Pathophysiology course at the Washington University School of Medicine, beginning in the mid-1960s. When changes in the medical school curriculum took place in the early 1970s, an effort was made to synthesize the minimum core curriculum for sophomore medical students, and the distillation of 'essential material' to be covered in the area of renal pathophysiology led to the development of the first edition of a renal syllabus. This syllabus has been used in our department since 1974, and, following some of the recommendations and critiques of students and faculty, it has been entirely reworked many times to improve its effectiveness and value. This book is a direct extension of that syllabus, integrated with contri butions from faculty members in our Renal Division, and expanded to include a section on therapy in most chapters. It is our hope that this format will serve the needs of not only sophomore and senior medical students, but also house officers, nephrology fellows, and clinicians. 616 pp. Englisch.

Because of this void the First Brook Lodge Symposium on Anti Atherosclerosis Drug Discovery was convened at Brook Lodge in Augusta, Michigan, August 13-15, 1975. The symposium was sponsored by The Upjohn Company and was international in scope, with investi gators attending from such countries as England, Japan, Belgium, and Italy. The symposium focused on the problems associated with the discovery and evaluation of new drugs effective in preventing or reversing atherosclerosis. The thrust of material is centered around animal models useful as tools in the search and evaluation of new drugs. Broadly categorized, the models are nonhuman primates, rabbits, rodents, quail, and tissue culture. The material is a mix of studies on serum lipids and, more importantly, of studies on the artery, irrespective of serum lipid levels. The prevention of arterial lesions, not reduction of serum lipids, is emphasized. A review of all anti-atherosclerotic agents, with the exception of hypolipidemic agents, is included in this volume of the proceedings of the symposium. 480 pp. Englisch.

In these years, after the age at which most people retire, he was still a most admirable man, with an active interest in science, and a wide and wise approach to its many facets. I was always impressed by his enthusiasm for, and lm. owledge about, studies of the nervous system, both his own and those of others. He was interested in myriads of details, which he was able to synthesize into concepts and systems. The present book reflects, in addition to his warmth and wit and wisdom, Dr. Palladin's approach and style: how he and his collaborators came to their conclusions after careful consid eration of all the facts. The references in this book, for example, show the great number of works that were found worthy of quoting and including. The reader can see the stepwise emergence of a concept as he reads the pages of this book. Facts are not given for facts' sake, but to try to present a picture based on a large number of observations, by most of the scientists who studied this aspect of the nervous system. The work emerges as from a community; there is no attempt to minimize results of others or to maximize those of Palladin's laboratories. Palladin's working lifespan covered over six decades, and many stages in biochemistry. 348 pp. Englisch.

This publication is the Pro ceedings from that Institute. The Institute was attended by eighty-five Participants and Lecturers representing the United States, Canada, France, West Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. A distinguished faculty of eighteen Lecturers was assembled and the topical program organized with the assistance of an Advisory Committee composed of: Dr. John Waymouth, USA; Dr. Timm Teich, Switzerland; Dr. Arthur Phelps, USA; Dr. Nicol Peacock, England; Professor Erich Kunhardt, USA; Dr. Anthony Hyder, USA; and Dr. Arthur Guenther, USA. The underlying theme and objective of the Institute was the enhance ment of scientific communication and exchange among academic, industrial, and national laboratory groups having a common concern for radiative processes in discharge plasmas. The program was organized into four major sessions sequentially treating: the fundamental science of visible and near-visible radiation in plasmas; the technology of discharge light sources; recent and novel methods for the generation of plasmas; and an update on advances in laser-based diagnostics. Each major session culmi nated in a panel discussion comprised of the Lecturers for that session. 604 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This unique book offers a theoretical framework for historical archaeology that explicitly relies on network theory. Charles E. Orser, Jr., demonstrates the need to examine the impact of colonialism, Eurocentrism, capitalism, and modernity on all archaeological sites inhabited after 1492 and shows how these large-scale forces create a link among all the sites. Orser investigates the connections between a seventeenth-century runaway slave kingdom in Palmares, Brazil and an early nineteenth-century peasant village in central Ireland. Studying artifacts, landscapes, and social inequalities in these two vastly different cultures, the author explores how the archaeology of fugitive Brazilian slaves and poor Irish farmers illustrates his theoretical concepts. His research underscores how network theory is largely unknown in historical archaeology and how few historical archaeologists apply a global perspective in their studies. A Historical Archaeology of the Modern World features data and illustrations from two previously unknown sites and includes such intriguing findings as the provenance of ancient Brazilian smoking pipes that will be new to historical archaeologists. 264 pp. Englisch.

Mackey documents a wealth of infor mation demonstrating the vast benefits to society when its children are raised in families with fathers. The biopsychosocial approach Mackey in human employs is consistent with the current treatment of topics development. This approach-which is grounded in a variety of diverse sources-assumes that we understand little about people when we study them a bit at a time; rather, the fullness of the individual requires a fullness of examination. For example, in the cases of fathers, we note that humans do not reproduce alone; after all, we are not an asexual species. No, human reproduction and its sequelae are social, just as clearly as they are biological, and involve the whole panoply of psychic function (mo tivation, sociability, intelligence, and the like). The evidence marshaled by Mackey indicates strongly that indi viduals and societies have an essential requirement for something more than mothering; they also need fathering. Much of the discourse and publication on fathers during the past several decades has been posited on a 'more is better' model of male parenting in which it is seldom stated who it is better for-the father, the child, the mother, the couple, or the family. Further, much of this discussion infers that fathers are merely 'Mr. Moms'; yet this is not so. 284 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Procrastination is a fascinating, highly complex human phenomenon for which the time has come for systematic theoretical and therapeutic effort. The present volume reflects this effort. It was a labor of love to read this scholarly, timely book-the first of its kind on the topic. It was especially encouraging to find that its authors are remarkably free of the phenomenon they have been investigating. One might have expected the opposite. It has often been argued that people select topics that trouble them and come to understand their problems better by studying or treating them in others. This does not appear to be true of the procrastination researchers represented in this book. I base this conclusion on two simple observations. First, the work is replete with recent refer ences and the book itself has reached the reader scarcely a year following its completion. Second, when one considers the remarkable pace of pro grammatic research by these contributors during the past decade, it is clear that they are at the healthy end of the procrastination continuum. The fascinating history of the term procrastination is well documented in this book. The term continues to conjure up contrasting, eloquent images-especially for poets. When Edward Young wrote in 1742, 'Pro crastination is the Thief of Time,' he was condemning the waste of the most precious of human commodities. 292 pp. Englisch.
