The Institute, co-directed by Prof. E.J. Henley and Dr. G. Volta, was attended by 67 persons from twelve countries. The focus of the Institute was on theoretical and applied aspects of reliability and risk analysis methodologies. The Institute was composed of lectures, workshops and gu~ded discussions. From the large quantity of written material that was used and produced during the Institute, a number of papers introducing the most relevant research results and trends in the field have been selected. The papers have been edited, partly rewritten and rearranged in order to obtain in the end an integrat ed exposition of methods and techniques for reliability analysis and computation of complex systems. The book is divided into four sections which correspond to fairly homogeneous areas from a methodological point of view. Each section is preceded by an introduction prepared by the Editors which aims at helping the readers to put in perspective and appre ciate the contribution of each paper to the subject of the section. 476 pp. Englisch.

Perhaps the principal reasons for interest in these phenomena are their sensitivity to composition, structure and external fields and, until fairly recently, the distressing fact that often even gross experimental features such as the sign of the thermopower eluded theoretical understanding. During the past two decades many of the previously perplexing aspects of thermoelectricity have yielded to more sophisticated theoretical treat ment. As a result of this effort and concomitant experimental work using advanced measurement techniques, there is now good reason to believe that thermoelectric phenomena can shed much light on the interactions between electrons and phonons, impurities, and other defects. The last few years have witnessed new and fascinating developments that promise to stimulate new activity in this field. In contrast to the more conventional transport properties, second-and high-order contributions in electron scattering theory appear to play a profound role in thermoelectricity-the controversy surrounding ordinary and 'phony' phonon drag is far from resolved; the startlingly large effect of magnetic fields on the thermopower of metals appears to be linked intimately to scattering anisotropy; quantum oscillations of thermopower are orders of magnitude larger than corresponding oscillations of the magnetoresistance; a new approach to thermoelectric studies allows extension of thermopower measurements into the millikelvin region of temperature; finally, the advent of superconducting detection devices permits the precise measurement of extremely small voltages, an essential requirement in this field. 284 pp. Englisch.

The conference was held jointly with the American Crystal lographic Association at Snowmass Resort, Colorado, from August 1 to 5, 1983. The papers appearing in this volume are only from pre dominantly Denver Conference (DC) sessions and from joint DC/ACA sessions. The early plans for holding a joint conference were initiated some three years ago by Q. C. Johnson of Lawrence Livermore Lab, J. B. Cohen of Northwestern University and P. K. Predecki of the University of Denver and were eventually brought to fruition by a jOint organizing committee consisting of: O. P. Anderson, Colorado State University (ACA) , D. E. Leyden, Colorado State University (DC), R. D. Witters, Colorado School of Mines (ACA) and P. K. Predecki (DC). We take this opportunity to thank the committee members and the early planners for their vision, ingenuity and hard work without which the conference would not have materialized. There was no plenary session in 1983, instead a number of special sessions were organized and chaired by various individuals. 600 pp. Englisch.

An understanding of how the surface region affects material properties starts with an understanding of the elemental composition of that region. Since the most common contaminants are light elements (for example, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen), there is a clear need for an analytic probe that simultaneously and quantitatively records elemental profiles of all light elements. Energy recoil detection using high-energy heavy ions is unique in its ability to provide quantitative profiles of light and medium mass elements. As such this method holds great promise for the study of a variety of problems in a wide range of fields. While energy recoil detection is one of the newest and most promising ion beam analytic techniques, it is also the oldest in terms of when it was first described. Before discussing recent developments in this field, perhaps it is worth reviewing the early days of this century when the first energy recoil detection experiments were reported. 468 pp. Englisch.

Knowledge about neurotransmitters in the brain has evolved from the discovery of the compounds per set through the elucidation of their biosynthetic and degradative pathways, and finally to the current focus, the regulation of these processes. Regulation in a biological system implies the capacity to respond to perturbations. The introduction of standard and speci fiable disturbances in a biological system followed by examination of the mechanisms involved in response, i.e. that dampen and/or cancel the induced changes, has proved to be a successful way to elucidate regulatory mechanisms. Psychotropic drugs have been most useful to students of regula tory mechanisms in that calvarial prisoner, the brain, for they allow prospective manipulation of variables like dosage and time. Those of us interested in the biological substrata of behavior are especially excited that disturbance induced by drugs leaves the organism intact and behaving, and we can observe behavioral correlates. The pharmacological strategy is, of course, not unique to brain scientists. The relationship between psychotropic drugs and our emerging knowledge of neurotransmitter regulation is, for example, akin to the development of anticancer agents in company with the uncovering of many mysteries of molecular biology. 332 pp. Englisch.

The meeting was intended to review new developments in the field defined by its purposely vague title. We were especially interested in communicating important advances in a broad perspective and in a self-contained manner to a wide colleague ship, and in particular to Latin American physicists. Whatever success we may have achieved in that direction would cer tainly not have been possible without the help and generosity of many people. For their kind support we thank the Tinker Foundation, the Inter national Centre for Theoretical Physics, the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres et Service Culturel et de Cooperation Scientifique et Technique de France and the Centro Latinoamericano de Fisica. We are especially grateful to the Santiago College and to its principal, Rebeca Donoso, for allowing us to hold the meeting at that school when, at the last moment, we were deprived of the previously arranged meeting site. Last but not least we thank the participants for an extraordinary week and the CECS staff for performing, as usual, beyond any reasonable expectation. 332 pp. Englisch.

The title of the Symposium was changed again this year by dropping the word 'Holography' to reflect the further emphasis on the general imaging aspects of the Symposium and the de-emphasis on the Holographic aspects. Because of this continued changing nature of the Symposium Series this volume has undergone the title change from ACOUSTICAL HOLOGRAPHY to ACOUSTICAL IMAGING. The 47 papers presented here illustrate the continued growth in this dynamic field. There has been a large emphasis on Array Technology as well as Underwater Applications, Seismic Applications, Transducers, New Methods, Acoustic Microscopy, Non-destructive Testing, Computer Tomography Techniques, Medical Applications as well as Tissue Characterization. The meeting was a great success and a stimulating experience for all concerned due principally to the enthusiasm and contrib utions of all of the authors represented here. Its omnI presence in our public media--in our newspapers, on TV, in magazines, and on radio--as well as in our everyday conversations indicate that we are well aware of the problems of over-tenseness. Pulp news papers and magazines increase their sales with promises of quick relief for tension problems. Business executives complain at the end of the day of being 'uptight', and often accept a hotel chain's invitation to 'unwind' at their bar. Soap operas attract large audiences, in part capitalizing on tension problems--irritable ar guments between husband_ and wife seem interminable! Indeed, the entire world is aware of the need to control ten sions. Such widespread needs invite varied 'solutions', with the most attractive appearing ones offering promises of quick and easy cures. The market for tension reduction has been exploited in numer ous ingenious ways for centuries but I think never more than today. People with serious tension disorders often eagerly seize promises of easy relief, regardless of cost. Those who suffer headaches, spastic colon, essential hypertension, back pains, phobias and general anxiety are especially sensitized to tension disorders and potential cures. The American Association for the Advancement of Tension Control is dedicated to the elimination of tension problems through a two pronged attack: through the immediate technological application of tension control principles that now exist, and by encouraging scientific research to further develop our methods. 336 pp. Englisch.

Accordingly, we attempt to set forth these principles, along with sufficient explanation, so that the reader may apply them to the ever-expanding literature of biochemistry. If we are successful, this will provide a theoretical approach which can be applied to any given set of metabolic reactions. It is impossible to enumerate each and every biochemical reaction and pathway since such a work would be too unwieldy for efficient use. Rather, we hope our presentation of the principles of metabolic control will be sufficiently basic to be of lasting usefulness no matter how detailed biochemistry may become. We would like to be able to con dense biochemistry into a theoretical biology that will not only allow for the general treatment of any given reaction but will enable predic tions to be made as to the existence of necessary pathways and the con sequences of altered control. Such is not possible today, but this may be accomplished in the future. We believe it is now possible to institute the beginnings of such a theoretical biology. 692 pp. Englisch.

Never theless, the potential hazards of many chemicals have been identi fied by studies on lower organisms. However, too little is known regarding the comparability or lack of it between the metabolic pathways available in such organisms and those in man. Although at present there is great public concern for what is considered by some as the excessive use of laboratory animals in toxicological testing, it seems clear that the usage of mammalian systems may be deemed necessary. It has been proposed that cell culture systems might suffice to meet this need, however, such approaches cannot match the complexity of physiological occurances that are present in the intact animal. For studies of genetic effects, some non-invasive human test systems are presently available. These do not, however, meet the re quirements for extensive laboratory studies. In order to assess the risks to humans of environmental factors such laboratory investiga tions are essential. Therefore, for the forseeable future reliance on experiments using laboratory animals will be necessary. This Volume, which contains the proceedings of a workshop which was held at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, March 29-31, 1982, explores the existing methodologies and their utility for risk estimations. It covers the most well developed human systems, as well as the most widely used animal tests. 352 pp. Englisch.

Proceedings reflects the work of the Conference. Plenary lectures of J. Burzyk, J. F. Colombeau, W. Gahler, H. Keiter, H. Komatsu, B. Stankovic, H. G. Tillman, V. S. Vladimirov provide an up-to-date account of the cur rent state of the subject. All these lectures, except H. G. Tillman's, are published in this volume. The published communications give the contemporary problems and achievements in the theory of generalized functions, in the theory of convergence structures and in their applications, specially in the theory of partial differential equations and in the mathematical physics. New approaches to the theory of generalized functions are presented, moti vated by concrete problems of applications. The presence of articles of experts in mathematical physics contributed to this aim. At the end of the volume one can find presented open problems which also point to further course of development in the theory of generalized functions and convergence structures. We are very grateful to Mr. Milan Manojlovic who typed these Proce edings with extreme skill and diligence and with inexhaustible patience. 468 pp. Englisch.

Some 40 leading experts from America, USSR, and Western Europe attended the Symposium. The purpose of the meeting was to review and discuss the physics of the hot plasma in the magnetosphere with special empha sis on unsolved problems on which attention needs to be focused during the International Magnetospheric Study 1976-1978. The field is very extensive and complete coverage of all aspects was of course not possible. The radiation belts proper were, for instance, not covered. There were no formal contributed papers, but much time was devoted to discussion. These proceedings contain all review papers except the one by R.Z. Sagdeev. They are ordered by subject, starting, after the introductory lecture, with the problem of how the plasma enters the magnetosphere and ending with the question of the interaction with the ionosphere. The Organizing Committee for the symposium was composed of the following Swedish scientists: E.-A. Brunberg, C.G. Fa1thammar, I. Hu1then, B. Hu1tqvist (chairman), L. Stenf10, and H. Wilhe1msson. The Symposium was financed by the Nobel Foundation through grants from the Tercentenary Foundation of the Bank of Sweden, by the Swedish Board for Space Activities, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which is gratefully acknowledged. Appreciated contributions 'in natura' were also received from the town of Kiruna and the LKAB Company. 384 pp. Englisch.

In particular with the commercial availability of more sophisticated experimental tech niques; such as Magnetic Circular Dichroism (M.C.D.), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (E.P.R. or E.S(pin).R.) and Single Crystal Polarised Spectra; experimental data of a much more sophisticated and selective nature than the old stand-by; absorption spectra and magnetic susceptibility; has become available. This new wealth of high quality experimental data thus pre sents challenges of interpretation and organization of the data which the new developments in group theory strive to meet. The wealth and quality of this new data makes the nuances and differences implicit in the traditional strong and weak field approach testable. Thus, these approaches can be tested more fully and new formalisms can be meaningfully tested, by comparison to experiment. Hence the characteristic implicit in the strong and weak field approaches are revealed by studies into their formal structures as exemplified by Drs. E. Konig, S. Kremer, and S. Piepho. Similarly, works proceed apace on the knotty problem of correlation and gen eralization of these properties through approaches such as those of Drs. P. H. Butler, J. C. Donini and M. Kibler. On a similar vein the deep structure of group representation and correlations of representation of various groups is explored by the afore mentioned and by Drs. Fritzer, Patera and Sharp. 708 pp. Englisch.

The old mold of X-ray spectroscopy has been burst, and this ASI provided an in-depth exploration of theory and recently developed techniques; however, some work still needs to be done to create a new frame and reduce anarchy in the field. The purpose of this Institute was to gather atomic and solid state physicists working in theoretical and new experimental techniques recently developed. The lectures were concerned with, among others, the following fields: theory of X-ray near-edge structure, XPS and AES with conventional and synchrotron radiation sources, PIXE, EXAFS, SEXAFS, XRF, SXS, and molecular spectroscopy. The Institute considered in detail some of these experimental tech niques and the pertinent theoretical interpretations by selecting an important list of lectures which summarize the scientific contents of the ASI. The truly international character of this NATO ASI, its size, and the high quality of the lecturers contributed to make this school a very fruitful scientific meeting. Two to four general lectures were given each working day and three afternoons were reserved for presentation of current work in the form of posters. This was the 30th in a series of the annual OHOLO Conferences, sponsored by the Israel Institute for Biological Research. Participants in this Conference consisted of scientists from four teen countries; represented a broad spectrum of research interests; and included a well-balanced representation from academia, clinical institutions and pharmaceutical industry. The book includes talks, poster sessions, and a comprehensive general discussion, all from the proceedings of this conference. In the interest of assuring a rapid publication of the novel infor mation reviewed, this book has been prepared in camera-ready format. We are cognizant of the fact that several typographical errors may exist in the text, and that there are variations in style and typeface of the var ious chapters. This, we felt, was a reasonable compromise for the sake of speed and efficient transmission of valuable scientific information. No body is perfect . ---- The success of the conference, and hence the quality of this book are attributable to the extensive efforts of a large number of extremely capable individuals. These include members of the Scientific Organizing Committee, and the Technical staff of the OHOLO Organization. Of course, the conference could not have succeeded without the high quality of the presentations, and the enthusiastic participation of the contributing scientists. 732 pp. Englisch.

This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the 'Ettore Majorana' Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the Institute was to present a comprehensive treatment of the basic mechanisms by which electronic excitation energy, initially localized in a particular constituent or region of a condensed material, transfers itself to the other parts of the system. Energy transfer processes are important to such varied .fields as spectroscopy, lasers, phosphor technology, artificial solar energy conversion, and photobiology. This meeting was the first encounter of this sort entirely dedicated to this important topic. A total of 65 participants came from 47 laboratories and 16 nations (Belgium, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States of A America). The secretaries of the course were: Ms. Aliki Karipidou for the scientific aspects and Mr. Massimo Minella for the admini strative aspects of the meeting. 728 pp. Englisch.

Some of his colleagues, friends, and former associates have expressed their esteem for this gentle person by the contribution of chapters in this book. Since this book can represent only an incomplete indication of Harold Himwich's influence, the editors have included his complete bibliography at the end of this volume. Harold Himwich's research career was divided into several phases, some of which overlapped. Starting with his first paper on rhabdomyoma of the ovary in 1920, he was entranced by research as well as by the puzzles and results which it promised. During the period that he was a resident and house officer at Bellevue Hospital in New York, he studied the physiology of muscular exercise. This work led him into studies of exercise in various types of disease. With Meyerhoff in Kiel, Germany, he began studying the respiratory quotient of muscle, and after returning to this country, he produced a number of papers on respiratory quotients of various organs including the brain. 240 pp. Englisch.

The presentations at the workshop provided a state of the art review of the fundamental aspects of the CVM and PPM and their application to a wide range of problems in statistical mechanics and alloy theory. The volume begins with several articles dealing with the study of the kinetics of ordering in Ising sytems and alloys using the PPM and other classical techniques. These articles are followed by the contribution of Professor Masuo Suzuki on the Coherent Anomaly Method which has added a new dimension to mean field theory, and the CVM in particular, in the study of critical phenomena. The remaining of the volume is dedicated to fundamental aspects and specific applications of the CVM in a wide range of subjects ranging from bulk and surface studies to new areas of inquiry such as the problem of image reconstruction. Since the inception by Prof. Ryoichi Kikuchi of the CVM in 1950 and of the PPM in 1966, the latter after a gestation period of approximately six years, the tech niques have found wide acceptance in the physics and materials science communities. Both methods are properly regarded as seminal contributions to equilibrium and non equilibrium statistical mechanics. 440 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When a dose of drug is administered, three main phases of drug action may be distingushed. In the 'pharmaceutical' phase the dosage form disintegrates, the active substance dissolves and becomes available for absorption. The second phase ('pharmaco kinetic' phase) includes absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. That fraction of the dose which finally reaches the circulation after absorption will be available for biological action in the third, or 'pharmacodynamic' phase when the drug reaches the target tissues and a drug-receptor interaction takes place. The objectives in studies of drug metabolism are: (a) to identify the pathways by which drugs are transformed in the body; (b) to ascertain quantitatively the importance of each pathway and intermediate; (c) to identify and quantify endogenous constituents influenced by the drug or its metabolites which may interfere with common metabolic processes. Since metabolites usually differ from their precursors by only a single chemical group, the resulting metabolic pathways generally consist of a series of closely related compounds. Mass spectrometry is uniquely suited for the analysis of drugs and metabolites for several reasons: only a minimal amount of sample preparation is needed, closely related compounds can be analyzed in a single step, structures can often be deduced directly from the mass spectra without the need for pure reference spectra, and constituents can be quantified with relative ease even when present in fractional nanogram quantity. 548 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The mammalian central nervous system is a remarkable structure which has attracted many new investigators, as evidenced by the dramatic increase in scientific publications dealing with neurobiology. Every day basic scientists conduct new and exciting experiments, resulting in remarkable discoveries des tined to help mankind. Unfortunately many of these new findings are slow to be accepted by the clinical world. This is especially true in the area of brain trauma, where the present prognosis is usually very poor. We have known for quite some time that the mammalian central nervous system is capable of compensating for severe damage in many different ways, and under some circumstances behav ioral compensation can be observed. However, much is still to be learned about the various factors and events that lead to functional recovery and those condi tions that do not. It is this challenge that originally excited a number of the contributors to this volume to explore the subject of recovery from brain damage. One factor in particular that is known to change the prognosis of recovery is the age of the organism at the time of the damage. This book is an attempt to explore this important variable. Most of the literature concerning aging deals with widespread degenerative changes and paints a grim picture for the aging central nervous system in terms of recovery of function following trauma. 240 pp. Englisch.

The first open-heart procedure was closure of an atrial septal defect in a child at the University of Minnesota Hospital in 1953. This issued in a life-saving advance, the use of which has expanded enormously to in clude treatment of many areas of cardiac disease. Not unexpectedly, surgical techniques allowed through the use of the heart-lung machine (open-heart surgery) came to be applied in 1967 to the major killer of Americans, namely, coronary artery disease. This operation, known as coronary artery bypass, has become one of the most common surgical operations. Coronary artery disease, with the possibility of total incapacitation or sudden death from a heart attack, can alter severely the personality of the patient. Corrective surgery can sometimes intensify rather than ame liorate a patient's fears. To the surgeon, occupied by increasing numbers of patients, there is not time enough to give the preoperative attention that might be helpful. Also, the surgeon and cardiologist are limited in their ability to recognize those patients near the breaking point. The research outlined in these chapters by Drs. Pimm, Feist, and their associates is welcomed by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. It provides insight into what appears to be reliable recognition of those patients likely to have an adversely affected mental status by coronary bypass surgery and 'crisis intervention' to avert this effect and allow the complete benefit of returning the patient to a normal life. 256 pp. Englisch.

The aim of this Conference, now at its fourth edition, was to give a general view of the actual research in the area of methods and systems for achieving artificial vision as well as to have an up-dated information of the current activity in Europe. A number of invited speakers presented overviews of statistical classification problems and methods, non conventional archi tectures, mathematical morphology, robotic vision, analysis of range images in vision systems, pattern matching algorithms and astronomical data processing. Finally a survey of the discussion on the contribution of AI to Image Analysis is given. The papers presented at the Conference have been subdivided in four sections: knowledge based approaches, basic pattern recognition tools, multi features system based solutions, image analysis-applications. We must thank the IBM-Italia and the Digital Equipment Corpo ration for sponsoring this Conference. We feel that the days spent at Cefalu' were an important step toward the mutual exchange of scientific information within the image processing community. v. Cantoni Pavia University V. Several books have been published which cover the area; one, edited by McManus, \* surveys the subject in general at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level. In addition, a number of monographs have appeared which deal with individual topics such as carbenes, nitrenes, free radicals, carbanions, carbenium ions, and so on, in great depth. Our objective is somewhat different. We hope that these Advances in . . . type of volumes will appear at irregular intervals of a year to 18 months each. We intend to publish up-to-date reviews in relatively new areas of the chemistry of reactive intermediates. These will be written by world authorities in the field, each one of whom will give the reader a current in-depth review of all aspects of the chemistry of each of these species. It is our plan that the subjects to be reviewed will cover not only organic chemistry but also inorganic, physical, bio-, industrial, and atmospheric chemistry. The volumes themselves, we hope, will end up being reasonably interdisciplinary, though this need not and probably will not be the case for the individual reviews. 616 pp. Englisch.

Two of the most obvious are desert areas where the salt concentration is very high, both land and water areas. With the development of new approaches and careful research, considerably more productive capability could be developed in these. This volume points out some of the possible approaches as well as results ob tained by a combination of creative research, practical understanding of the problems involved and inventive ways to overcome some of the handicaps of utilizing biosaline areas. This volume grew out of the 'International Workshop on Biosaline Research' organized by Mr. Gilbert Devey of the Division of Interna tional programs of the National Science Foundation and directed by Dr. Anthony San Pietro of the Department of Biology of Indiana Uni versity. Since the proceedings of the workshop appeared somewhat limited, it was thought to broaden the spectra of chapters and in clude several topics briefly discussed at the Kiawah workshop. 404 pp. Englisch.
