Neuware -These are the Proceedings of the 2nd International Metastasis Congress of the Metastasis Research Society which took place in the town hall (Stadthalle) of Heidelberg, FRG, in September, 1988. This first Metastasis Congress in the FRG was organized in conjunction with the German Association of Cancer Research (SEK) of the German Cancer Society. The congress topic generated tremendous interest and attracted about 400 scientists from 22 countries. Most participants came from Europe, Israel, and the United States. Why did we organize the Metastasis Congress Only about 50% of all people who develop some form of cancer are curable. Despite improved patient care and increasingly innovative and effective techniques for diagnosing and treating primary cancers, the development of secondary cancer colonies, i. e. , metastasis, can not be prevented and is the major cause of death. In the Federal Republic of Germany there are still as many as 160 000 cancer patients per year who succumb to their disease, often after periods of terrible suffering, and this overall figure is not improving. Partly because of the complexity of the process, basic research on metastasis has lagged behind other disciplines such as carcino genesis and cancer genetics. Metastasis formation involves the ability of malig nant cells to invade adjacent tissue and to penetrate into lymphatic or blood circulatory systems, or both, and to spread to near or distant sites to form new tumor colonies. Neuware -At the annual meetings ofthe 'Fast Reactions in Solution Discussion Group' of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an increasing number of contributions is concerned with reactions in complex liquids, where the solvents cannot be regarded as homogeneous media but where their microstructure has to be taken into account. In order to summarize the different aspects of those solvents, the 1988 meeting of the group has been held as a symposium devoted to 'Compartmentalized Liquids'. The contributions concerned different fields of science from mathematics, physics, and chemistry to food research and pharmacy. Thus it was appropriate to organize the meeting afthe Zentrum fUr interdiszipliniire Forschung at Bielefeld. Envisaging compartmentalized liquids on a scale descending size, we may order the systems described in this volume from colloidal solutions, gels, hydro col loids, membranes, vesicles, microemulsions, micellar solutions, macrocyclic complexes to 'cages' involved in bimolecular encounter. In recent years many experimental and theoretical studies have been performed on those systems, and they are also of growing interest for technical applications. Two important reasons for the investigation of compartmentalized liquids as reaction media are: i) they are suited for performing reactions between water-soluble and oil-soluble reactants, ii) they provide large internal interfaces, where reactions may be catalyzed. Due to the large interfaces, the diffusion of molecules is restricted, and for the theoretical treatment of reaction rates in these systems the concept offractal geometry seems to be appropriate. Funktionentheorie und Funktionalanalysis beruht. Auf der anderen Seite gewinnen die Integralgleichungen ihr praktisches Interesse aus der «Integralgleichungsmethode». die es erlaubt, partielle Differential gleichungen in Integralgleichungen umzuformen. Das Buch ist aus Vorlesungen hervorgegangen, die der Autor an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel gehalten hat. Der Umfang der Kapitel 1 bis 6 entspricht etwa einer intensiven vierstündigen Vorlesung. Das Studium der Integral gleichungen kann mit Vorkenntnissen der Analysis und den Grundlagen der Numerik aufgenommen werden. Kenntnisse aus der Funktional analysis sind hilfreich. aber nicht unabdingbar, wenn Grundbegriffe wie Banach-und Hilbert-Räume geläufig sind. Der Theorieteil dieses Buches ist so knapp wie möglich bemessen. da die Numerik in den Kapiteln 2. 4, 5 im Vordergrund stehen soll. Wichtige Teile der benötigten Funktionalanalysis wie etwa die Riesz-Schauder-Theorie werden ohne Herleitung wiedergegeben. Es wird dabei davon ausgegangen. daß dem Leser dieses Gebiet entweder aus einer Vorlesung über «Funktionalanalysis» bekannt ist oder daß e- mit gesteigerter Motivation durch praktische Beispiele - diese Kapitel durch Vorlesungen oder Lektüre nachholen wird. Es sei daran erinnert. daß auch historisch die Funktionalanalysis aus der Diskussion der Integralgleichungen hervorgegangen ist. Als Funktionenräume werden in dieser Darstellung vornehmlich die klassischen der stetigen oder Hölder-stetigen Funktionen verwendet.
