Hardcover. Etat : New. Paris - A Short Return by Robert Frank Steidl Paris - A Short Return is the first time that the significant body of photographs which Robert Frank made in Paris in the early 1950s have been brought together in a single book. His visit to Paris in 1951 was his second return to Europe after he had settled in… New York City in 1947 and some of the images he made during that visit have become iconic in the history of the medium. The 80 photographs selected by Robert Frank and Ute Eskildsen suggest that Frank's experience of the 'new world' had sharpened his eye for European urbanism. He saw the city's streets as a stage for human activity and focused particularly on the flower sellers. His work clearly references Atget and invokes the tradition of the flaneur. 160 pages, 80 tritone plates 20 cm x 24.5 cm Steidl ISBN: 978-3-86521-524-6 Publication date: May 2008.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Robert Adams - Gone 'No one wants to be a prophet, if the job can be avoided. What you want to try to be is a psalmist.' (Robert Adams) Robert Adams began by photographing suburban landscapes along the edge of the Rocky Mountains. His goal was then, and remains, to acknowledge the disappearance of wilderne…ss but also to discover a basis for affirmation. In the 1980s he went on to revisit semi-rural areas through which he had walked as a boy - landscapes no longer pristine but still notable for their quiet, space and light. The views in this book, none published before, record some of what he found compelling. Hardcover: 128 pages, 120 plates Dimensions: 2 x 26.4 x 26.2 cm Publisher: Steidl ISBN-13: 978-3865219176.

Hardcover. Etat : New. What do flowers, skulls and contact sheets have in common - Not much you might think, but David Bailey begs to differ. This book combines Bailey's recent colour photographs of still-life flowers and skulls, with black and white contacts of his iconic celebrity portraiture and fashion work from the 1960s. O…ne might analyze Bailey's combination of these bodies of work in light of the vanitas tradition, seeing it as a commentary on mortality and the passing of time. Indeed such a reading is tempting when comparing images of wilting roses with contacts of Brian Jones and John Lennon, both of whom appear confident in the prime of youth, unaware of the fates that will befall them. But perhaps this is too much, and Bailey himself would probably tell you so. For him, the flowers, skulls and contacts are simply different projects that he was working on simultaneously and decided to combine because he likes the idea of 'eclectic collections'. Enough said. Hardcover. Etat : New. In the fall of 1968, Robert Adams, a college English teacher, found himself inexplicably drawn to photograph a nondescript area south of Colorado Springs whose most notable feature was a truck stop off the interstate. Unflinching in their description yet embodying a mysteriously radiant peace, the pictures… Adams made of the otherwise graceless site confirmed for him a vital new way of relating to the world. He would parlay this revelation into The New West, the book that would establish both his photographs and his subjectthe contemporary landscape of the American frontieras matters of wider consequence. This pivotal early series has been re-edited to include previously unpublished pictures from the period.\n\n48 pages, 21 images\n\nHardback / Clothbound\n23 x 20.5 cm\n\nEnglish\n\nISBN 978-3-95829-681-7.

Hardcover. Etat : New. Signed by the Photographer Paul Graham - Does Yellow Run Forever? Paul Graham's Does Yellow Run Forever? comprises a series of photographs touching upon the ephemeral question of what we seek and value in life ? love, wealth, beauty, clear-eyed reality or an inner dream world? The work weaves in and out of… three groups of images: photographs of rainbows from Western Ireland, a sleeping dreamer, and gold stores in the United States. The imagery leads us from reality to dream and illusion, between fact and spectral phenomena, each entwined one within the other. Does Yellow Run Forever? refuses to reduce the world to a knowable schema, but instead embraces the puzzle - that there are no singular meanings, direct answers, or gold waiting at the end of the rainbow. Yet, there are startling visions in the everyday, be they'beautiful' or 'ugly', that there are dreams worth dreaming, magical scenes to be seen, and true moments of wonder to be found as we shiver the mirror of life. Hardcover. Etat : New. There is a bump in one corner of his book Signed by the Photographer "Standing under the sky on a clear night, one receives the unmistakable impression of being at the centre of a celestial sphere beautifully lit by a multitude of stars. This is humankind?s first experience of the cosmos, and the framework… for all observational astronomy. The sphere is such an ideal form to reflect our perception of the universe, that for centuries western astronomers described celestial phenomena only in terms of spheres and circles.? ? from the Introduction by Paolo Carini Inspired by the complexities of the sphere and its profound significance in our universe, Camille Solyagua has developed a technique of projecting light through a combination of liquids onto photographic paper, producing images of distant worlds that exist for only a matter of seconds. These elegant photograms play with our perceptions of light and dark, liquid and solid, time, distance and scale. They suggest the invisible by focusing on the visible, thereby constructing an enigmatic bridge between the micro and macrocosmic world. Her small-scale liquid concoctions help us to reflect on the mystery of the cosmos and the delicate balance in which our world exists. This large-format book contains thirty-two plates, printed in duotone on matte art paper, and hand-bound in deep blue cloth. Printed in a first edition of 1,000 copies Hardcover, 14 x 17, 40 pages, 32 duotone plates.

Hardcover. Etat : New. In one of his last acts as mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani signed an order permitting the High Line, that beloved elevated railroad ruin which snaked down the west side of Manhattan, to be torn down. Everyone who had managed to climb up onto the High Line loved it: the wildflowers growing through dis…used tracks, the birds that followed the path north in spring, and south again in fallthat rural feeling magically flowing through the city like an unbidden river. Who didn't love the High Line? Those who owned the land beneath it and longed to erect high-rise buildings on the site, if only the High Line wasn't blocking their way. And so when Giuliani signed that order, the Friends of the High Line, the small community organization led by Robert Hammond and Joshua David, sprang into legal action, seeking an injunction.\n\nFor over a year, Joel Sternfeld had already been photographing this hidden jewel in every season, so New Yorkers could visually climb up and see it too. In October 2001, while the rubble of the World Trade Center was still smoldering, Gerhard Steidl accepted Sternfeld's urgent request to make a book and flew to New York: together they designed Walking the High Line and just seven weeks later it was delivered, a vision for the wildly successful park that today hosts over two million visitors a year. Now in a new edition with nine additional photos, a larger format and an updated timeline, this is the book that made walking the High Line possible.\n\n72 pages, 55 images\n\nHardback / Clothbound\n30.5 x 25.3 cm\n\nEnglish\n\nISBN 978-3-95829-764-7.

Hardcover. Etat : New. David Bailey - Delhi Dilemma Pink is the navy blue of India. Diana Vreeland How does one photograph Delhi without the results looking like cliched, tourist-friendly images from the pages of National Geographic? How does a photographer of David Baileys standing portray India without seeming condescending? B…ailey has been to India fifteen times, and in these photographs he avoids depicting the cultural and economic differences between East and West that can make photos of the country seem overly didactic. Instead, Bailey depicts the colours, textures and people that characterise Delhi a magenta sari, an infant walking down a rust-coloured road, a bright blue plastic tarpaulin and so creates a portrait of the city that is sensitive without being self-indulgent. Hardcover. Etat : New. There is a bump in one corner of this book Signed by the photographer Bleed: simon norfolk A haunting and beautiful limited edition book from the internationally respected photographer, Simon Norfolk. The page size is a massive 400mm x 320mm. It is printed on extra weight 200gsm paper, and incorporates mat…t and gloss varnishes. It includes 24 colour plates. The war in Bosnia in the 1990s raised to common currency the terms ?ethnic cleansing,? and ?humanitarian intervention? It brought back to Europe a barbarism not seen since the Second World War; and was the first war fought very much under the eyes of the media. It was also the first conflict fought by killers who knew, even before the war had finished, that a war crimes tribunal awaited them. Norfolk?s photographs initially appear almost abstract. Yet through these still and beautiful images of ice, water, snow and the land, we can sense the arrogance of killers who believed they could conceal the brutal evidence of their crimes by reburying their victims in ?secondary' graves. But over time secrets escape, and the truth bleeds out. Winner of the 2002 European Publishers? Award for Photography, Simon Norfolk won the Olivier Rebbot Award (Foreign Press Association of America) in 2003 and was shortlisted for the CitiBank Prize. In 2004 he received a prestigious International Centre of Photography Infinity Award, and the Terence Donovan Award from the Royal Photographic Society. Already in 2005 he has received the Association of Photographers?Bursary Award, and been nominated for the Arles Outreach Award.

Hardcover. Etat : New. American Night Paul Graham Signed by the Photographer Paul Graham's photographs touch upon the social fracture of America--the great divide between the included and excluded, blacks and whites, haves and have-nots. Taking on a simple topic, of late dealt with only through clich photojournalism, American Ni…ght embraces neglected territory in a series of shocking images that sit on the fence between art and document. Graham's images blind and overwhelm the viewer with a feeling akin to stepping out of a sheltered place and into the sunlight. Drained of color, shadow and form, they resonate with the lives of those they portray.and then the sequence snaps, either to a vibrant full-color image of a freshly minted dream house, complete with a blue sky and green grass of unattainable perfection, or to an intensely dark street portrait.before returning to the endless blinding whiteness of everyday life. Beyond their paucity or wealth of color these images contrast one another in their content: These perfect homes are unobtainable to those walking in the burnt landscape; they are a mirage, a dream or promise that can almost never be reached. Here is the chasm between promise and actuality, hope and reality, dream and truth. Shot between 1998 and 2002 in locations across America, including Los Angeles, Memphis, Detroit, New York City and Atlanta. Paul Graham was born in England and currently lives in New York. He has been the recipient of many awards including a Eugene Smith Memorial Fellowship. His work has been exhibited extensively, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate Gallery, London. Published books include Troubled Land, New Europe, Empty Heaven, End of an Age and American Night.

Hardback. Etat : New. This is the long-awaited reprint of William Eggleston's Chromes, the first in the ongoing series of boxed sets published by Steidl examining the entirety of Eggleston's seminal uvre. Eggleston's standing as one of the masters of color photography is widely acknowledged. But the gradual steps by which he tra…nsformed from an unknown into a leading artist are less well known. Chromes is an edit of more than 5,000 Kodachromes and Ektachromes taken from ten chronologically ordered binders found in a safe at the Eggleston Artistic Trust. This archive had once been used by John Szarkowski who selected the 48 images printed in Eggleston's seminal book William Eggleston's Guide, while the rest of the archive has remained almost entirely unpublished. This book presents Eggleston's early Memphis imagery, his testing of color and compositional strategies, and the development towards the "poetic snapshot."
