Bob Natkin (American, 1919-1996) started taking picture in high school, developing and printing in a friend's basement. At age 21 he was drafted and abruptly went from being a student in pre-med to being an Air Force gunner photographer during World War II. Afterwards, Natkin became a professional photographer, primarily capturing people in their environments all over his beloved Chicago. He also made remarkable images on a trip to Mexico in 1948, photographing the mexican people in ways quite unanticipated by those who had commissioned the work. These disparate scenarios have in common Natkin's skillful technique and compassionate rendering. The Daiter exhibit focuses on images taken from 1948 to 1953. ?It was a period of intense early creativity for him,? says Berlanga. Some of the best pictures were taken while he was doing an assignment for the Mexican tourism bureau?men walking a row of pigs down the street, an organgrinder looking furtively over his shoulder, a family waiting impatiently at a bus station. ?The sincerity and the intensity of many of the images he took down in Mexico are not the standard issue of what a tourist board would use to get tourists to go south of the border,? says Berlanga. The photos taken in Chicago that make up the rest of the exhibit have the same unadorned naturalism, whether they?re of narcotics court or the 1952 Republican National Convention, of popular entertainers or residents of the city?s slums.…

XX [From Prabook website] Joseph Sterling was a photographer, his works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, George Eastman House, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Joseph Sterling was born on November 5, 1936, in El Paso, Texas. He began photographing by age eleven, in his native Texas. Inspired by a teacher and a single photograph by Harry Callahan that he saw in a magazine, he left his home state and Texas State College in 1956, transferring to Chicago and the Institute of Design. Joseph Sterling received a Bachelor of Science (1959) and a Master of Science (1962) in Photography from the IIT Institute of Design (ID) at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). After graduating, Joseph Sterling pursued a career from 1960 to 1990 as a magazine and corporate/industrial photographer, for which he won numerous awards. During this time he traveled widely and continued to pursue his personal photography. Joseph Sterling also helped establish the photography department at Columbia College of Chicago and has taught and lectured at both the Institute of Design and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Among other publications, Sterling's work has appeared in Aperture magazine and Time-Life's "This Fabulous Century." His photographs can also be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, George Eastman House, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. [From the book] Photography has been central to Joe Sterling's life. He first became interested in the medium at the age of eleven when he saw an older cousin's darkroom. It was, as he recalls, "love at first sight." Remarkably enough, the high school he attended in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, offered a four-year course in photography. This program was the brainchild of Shirlee Shaver, an art teacher, painter, and photographer who had earlier studied with Carlotta Corpron—an acquaintance of Institute of Design founder Låszlo Moholy-Nagy and herself a noted experimental photographer—at Texas Women's University, in Denton. In addition to Miss Shaver's teaching, Sterling's earliest influence was Life magazine - "at that time in El Paso," he recalls, with only slight exaggeration, "that's all I saw." Not surprisingly, he thought he would be a documentary photographer. Sterling photographed avidly through high school, recording his friends, sporting events, and the usual range of yearbook subjects. In truth, photography was far more than a simple hobby for Sterling: it allowed him to build a firm sense of identity at a characteristically vulnerable age. He regularly won local and national photography awards, thus achieving a recognition and respect that helped offset the fact that he was thin and painfully shy around girls. He died in 2010.
