From dust jacket: Stalag Luft III, the historical setting for the film The Great Escape, was located about 90 miles southeast of Berlin. When it opened in April 1942, the camp held several hundred Allied prisoners in two compounds. By February 1945, when it was hastily evacuated, the camp had grown to a sprawling complex of six compounds and held a total of more than ten thousand prisoners. Based largely on a coded history secretly kept by te prisoners and smuggled out during the 1945 evacuation Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story is the first comprehensive account of what life in this Second World War prison camp was actually like. Arthur A. Durand also draws on first-hand sources, including personal interviews, diaries, logs, letters and recently declassified government documents.
