With innumerable analyses by art historians, we thought the most fitting and exciting accompaniment to this display would be a collection of writers' reflections on Tuymans' work. Since one of the things to make this retrospective display special is its being the artist's debut in Central-Europe, Hungary and Poland, we made a point of inviting authors from the region to comment on his art. We gave complete liberty to our authors to decide what to reflect on: a picture, Tuymans' activity as a painter, or some other aspect of his personality. AUTHOR: Luc Tuymans (01958) is one of the most important painters of his generation. His first major museum presentations were held in 1990 at the Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Ostend, Belgium, and the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent. In 1992, the artist participated in Documenta IX in Kassel, in addition to having a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern, which helped cement his growing reputation in Europe. In 1994, Luc Tuymans: Superstition debuted at Portikus, Frankfurt, and travelled to David Zwirner, New York; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia, establishing him as a major influential artist abroad. In 2001, the artist represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale to great acclaim. Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp and is represented by David Zwirner Gallery. SELLING POINTS: . In 1959, Fidel Castro and Che Guevarra ousted dictator Batista and the country entered a utopian future. But Soviet communism and the American embargo forced Cuba to survive because the country remained fundamentally committed to the socialist values of the revolution. Against this background, an extensive photography project was set up with four Cuban and four European participants. Taking the current reality of the island as a starting point, they each developed a project, which together provide a nuanced picture of the complex country. The eight projects pit the photographic interpretations of the local artists against those of the Europeans. The project starts from 'heritage' in the broadest sense of the word and focuses on the past, present and future of Cuba. Cuba Photography Missions proposes an approach to reality in the country from the personal poetics of our artists and their European counterparts, assuming Cuban contemporaneity as a topic of reflection, among universal aspects that specify the thematic and formal coherence of the exhibition. AUTHORS: Ossain Raggi Gonzalez is a photo-based artist and professor living and working in La Habana, Cuba. In addition to his own artistic work, since 1997, has been active as a highly committed professor of photography at the Cuban University of Arts (ISA). He is currently Head of Photography Department and chairman of the admissions jury of the Visual Arts Faculty. Simon Roberts is a visual artist based in Brighton, UK. Widely recognised for his large-format, tableaux photographs of the British landscape, his practice also encompasses video, text and installation work, which together, interrogate notions of identity and belonging, and the complex relationship between history, place and culture. Bert Danckaert studied photography at the Academy for Fine Arts and the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. He is head of the photography department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Charlotte Lybeer received her PhD in visual arts (Lifestyle Supermarket) at the Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where she's teaching photography. As a photographer Lybeer combines the curiosity of the journalist researching actual phenomena symptoms of the global, capitalist crisis the empathy of the detective infiltrating enclosed worlds, and the sensibility to capture the way fiction transforms reality. Mudlarks comb the river's foreshore, which is only accessible for a few hours a day at low tide, in their hunt for objects, untouched since they were lost hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Jutten is about men in boots mudlarking the bank of the Scheldt river in Antwerp, in search of shards of the past, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes. Finds have a strange hold over us. There's a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there's too much of ourselves in the object already. We don't deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display. The more trash we've dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. So we go hunting for crap that's out of place.
