J.M. Robertson was one of the leading exponents of what came to be known as the 'mythicist' theory of Christianity, which drew on a multitude of data from sources in anthropology and comparative religion, as well as innovative 19th century explorations into Biblical origins. Robertson's most distinctive thesis is that the Gospel story of the Last Supper, The Agony, the Betrayal, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection was a mystery play which later came to be accepted as an account of real happenings, and that the make~believe of drama is an evolution from the primitive and savage reality of human sacrifice. The main theme of this book is that religion, as we know it today, has evolved from primitive concepts and savage rites, including human sacrifice and cannibalism. So far from Christianity being an exception it is a conspicuous example of such a development. The history of religion is a history of the manufacture of gods by men. The primary objects of worship give ground in course of time to secondary gods. Most of these are lawgivers and moral teachers; some are saviors who are sacrificed and brought to life again. The various savior~gods, whose death and resurrection are periodically celebrated, give this book its title of Pagan Christs. In proving his thesis, Robertson covers a vast interdisciplinary field, ranging from 'The Vogue of Human Sacrifice' and 'Eating the God' to The Mystery Play; 'The Quest for the Historical Jesus: through 'Manes and Manlchaeisrn.' 'Mithraisrn and Christianity' and 'The Fatality of the Priesthood.' This edition of Pagan Christs has been abridged to allow the general reader access to the core of Robertson's theories without undertaking the full breadth of his remarkable (and distracting) scholarship. The Pagan Christs can bear the most critical scrutiny and stand on its own merits. The information it contains about the brutal and bizarre world of religious fantasy is as astonishing as it is sobering. John Mackinnon Robertson was born in the Isle of Arran on November 14, 1856 and died in 1933.
