It appears this little booklet of poetry by various people (one assumes residents of Muskoka, though not exclusively) was published to raise money for the Wishing Well Fund. 12 pages near the rear list those who gave their lives in service 1939-1945 and are to be named on the 'Wishing Well Memorial.' It also states that further contributions from the Wishing Well will be used to assist veterans confined to hospital.

Copiously illustrated wi…th period paintings, drawings, original artwork, stunning modern color photographs, maps, and charts. "The epic story of the fur-trading company that built a nation. In words and with hundreds of breathtaking images, bestselling author Peter C. Newman recounts the enthralling 320-year saga of "the Bay" - the remarkable company that began with a royal grant and grew into history's largest private commercial empire." - from the rear outer jacket "What a story these rogues who shaped Canada's destiny have to tell! Peter Newman has told it with unmitigated rawness instead of awe." - New York Times "Engrossing, gripping stuff. In the hands of such a master word-craftsman as Newman, the historical tapestry woven is larger than life." - Calgary Herald "A monumental tale - the scale of it staggers the imagination." - Financial Times, London "Its empire once covered a twelfth of the earth's land surface, stretching from the Arctic Ocean to San Francisco and from Labrador to Hawaii. Today, on the verge of its 320th anniversary, the Hudson's Bay Company remains the world's oldest continuous commercial enterprise. The story of this fur-trading colossus and its long-running monopoly spans three centuries of war, exploration, intrigue, and endurance. Now in one large and lavish volume, Peter C. Newman, the bestselling author of a three-part history of "the Company of Adventurers," relates the three-century saga of the empire that fur built. In words and with dozens of fascinating pictures, this illustrated history explores how a group of merchant princes and their rugged employees tamed a wilderness and opened up the heart of a continent. It begins with the hapless mariners of the 1600s who stumbled into the icy bay atop North America while searching for the Orient. The treasures of the East eluded them, but the frozen lands they discovered held the promise of riches of another kind. Before long a rage for beaver hats in Europe spurred England's King Charles II to grant a vast region rich in furs to his cousin Prince Rupert and a group of investors. This charter of 1670 made them the "true and absolute Lordes and Proprietors" of all the seas and lands of Hudson Bay and its entire tributary system. In the years that followed, the trading posts of the Hudson's Bay Company would encompass three million square miles, making it the largest private landowner in history. In Empire of the Bay, each act of the ongoing drama is vividly narrated and compellingly conveyed with authentic contemporary paintings and illustrations. A host of maps, charts and photographs highlighted by informative captions and features illuminates the panoramic progress of the fur trade as it pushes ever farther into the wilds of North America. But, above all, the history of the Hudson's Bay Company is an account of the lives of remarkable people. The cast of characters depicted here includes Restoration aristocrats and backwoods voyageurs, eccentric knights and dispossesed Highlanders, heroic pathfinders and, ultimately, the pinstriped businessmen who today oversee holdings that generate an annual five billion dollars in revenue. Here is the stirring epic adventure of the company that became a nation - colourfully told by its leading historian and brilliantly evoked in hundreds of unforgettable images." - from the inner front jacket flap. Fleming, Kevin (photographer) (illustrateur).

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. Hindenburg: an Illustrated History; text by Rick Archbold; paintings by Ken Marschall; historical consultants: Dennis R. Kromm, Dr. Henry Cord Meyer, John Provan; a Viking Studio-Madison Press Book, Toronto, 1994. From the blurb A radio reporter's account of the giant Hindenbur…g crashing to the ground in flames at Lakehurst, New Jersey, remains one of the most famous broadcasts ever made. The Hindenburg was truly a flying luxury liner, and her spectacular destruction on May 6, 1937, marked the end of the great era of airship travel. Now, in one splendidly illustrated volume, the complete story of Germany's mammoth airship and the other silver giants that once crossed the skies is told as never before. Dozens of paintings, diagrams, black-and-white and color photographs many of them unpublished convey just what it was like to make a voyage on the largest aircraft ever constructed. In a spectacular three-page foldout, readers can explore the Hindenburg's passenger decks, from the lounge with its grand piano and the promenades with their panoramic views to the elegant dining room and the airtight smoking room. Ken Marshall's evocative paintings depict some of the great moments in the history of zeppelins up to the fiery disaster that brought the airship era to an untimely end. This large format book, 229 pages is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap.

EDITORIAL DIRECTOR: Hugh M. Brewster. PROJECT EDITOR: Mireille Majoor. TEXT EDITOR: Shelley Tanaka. RESEARCH AND TRANSLATION: Alla Savranskaia. MAP: Jack McMaster. PRODUCTION DIRECTOR: Susan Barrable. PRODUCTION CO-ORDINATOR: Donna Chong. PICTURE CREDITS: The endpapers of this book and all black-and-white and hand-colored photographs, album pages and quotes from the letters of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaievna, unless otherwise designated, are courtesy of the State Archive of the Russian Federation, Moscow. All color photographs, unless otherwise designated, are by Peter Christopher. SYNOPSIS: "She was the imp of the whole house.it was impossible to resist her jokes and nonsense."--French tutor, Pierre Gilliard. Anastasia made everyone laugh. Even her father, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, could not resist her hilarious imitations of pompous visitors to the palace. The tsar and his children loved to take photographs and they spent many cozy evenings pasting snapshots of their trips and activities into albums. Anastasia like to paint flowers on the pages of her albums or add color to the black-and-white photos. Sometimes she would color an entire picture--at other times she would simply highlight a favorite hat or dress. Anastasia also wrote letters to her father and to friends that reveal her lively personality. Even after the tsar's downfall and the imperial family's imprisonment in Siberia, Anastasia's photographs and letters continued, providing a record of their lives until almost the very end. Drawing on these precious personal keepsakes--long hidden in Soviet archives--Anastasia's Album offers a unique glimpse into the private world of the last Romanovs. Here is the fascinating true story of a remarkable young girl's life and an unforgettable portrait of the last days of imperial Russia. Hugh Brewster is a Canadian editor and writer. While viewing the imperial family's albums at the State Archive in Moscow, he realized that Anastasia's story, as told through her own photographs and letters, would make a wonderful illustrated book for readers of all ages. Peter Christopher's color photography complements the period photographs taken by Anastasia and her family. - and - Enter the world behind the palace gates.Anastasia's Album. She was the family comic, full of fun and pranks. She was also the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaievna, fourth daughter of the tsar of Russia. Anastasia loved to take photographs of all her family's activities and paste them into hand-decorated albums. Published here for the first time, Anastasia's photographs, drawings and letters tell a story that will enthrall readers of all ages. From the splendors of St. Petersburg's great palaces to the family's exile and imprisonment in Siberia, here is an unforgettable portrait of Anastasia's life and the lost world of imperial Russia.
