Urartian pottery has been being discussed for a considerable period of time, namely since the last quarter of the 19th century. However, overshadowed by other attractive Urartian finds, this interest did not reach the stage of serious investigation until the excavations undertaken by K. Lake at Van in 1938, through which Urartian pottery became a seperate field of research. H. H. von der Osten, who participated in the Van excavations, published the two kinds of existing pottery, namely the monochrome and the painted varieties. In the article the author mentioned essential points about Urartian pottery. From the Second World War onwards research on Urartu has considerably developed and the excavations at the important Urartian sites have increased our knowledge of the pottery to a great extent. On August 24, the machine struck several pieces of marble. One of them was half of a pedimental relief (Pis. 99-i02a), the others were Roman architectural pieces. The pieces were found some 2 meters below the present bed of the Pactolus, in the vicinity of our excavation sector "Pactolus Cliff"1 at the grid intersection W 360/S 588. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The discovery of two painted tombs in the plain of Elmali, recently visited by the honored recipient of this volume and discussed by him on that occasion, direct one's thoughts toward the problem of the continuity of the art of wall painting in ancient Anatolia and its relationships to the art of its neighbors, specifically to Greek painting. Anatolia has spectacular early examples of wall painting from the neolithic town at Catal Hüyük, which seem, to contain reminiscences of even earlier, perhaps Palaeolithic art. The paintings of Qatal Hüyük are done in a simple technique of native colors on a white background covering the mud plaster of mudbrick walls1. Once the art of wall decoration was established in Anatolia c. 6000 B. C, it is unlikely to have been given up as a form of ornamental treatment of architecture and meaningful design in domestic (or, as the case may be, ritual, sacred, ceremonial, palatial) environment. Located 37 km. from Islahiye as the crow flies, it lies 25 km. to the northeast of Zincirli (ancient Sam'al) and 5 km. to the northeast of Gedikli (Karahüyük). During our 1966 season of excavations at Gedikli Handan Alkim (my wife), Dr. Refik Duru, and the present writer paid a visit to Kiriskal and saw there on the eastern side of the Hüyük a small opening to a subterranean construction (fig. 102, III 2-3/C 6-8) of megalithic aspect. At first sight we thought that it was a chamber tomb with a dromos and compared it with a similar structure (M 4) excavated at Gedikli. In the same year we excavated completely the "Tomb of the Princess", the smallest and most ancient burial of the three hypogea thus far discovered, which communicate with one another, and we started the exploration of the most important burial of the complex, the "Tomb of the Lord of the goats", whose excavation was completed in 1979. The three tombs were sealed by the floors of the Western Palace in Area Q. Es sind drei an Zahl: je eine männliche und eine weibliche sind aus Wachs geformt, die andere mit dem im Assyrischen gebräuchlichen Terminus assinnu bezeichnete bestand aus Holz und nahm expressis verbis eine Sonderstellung ein: ar-ha-ia-an-na heißt es, "gesondert aber". Assinnu bezeichnet den Eunuchen, was einige Bearbeiter mit Skepsis erfüllt, weil der Begriff auch auf Lustknaben Anwendung findet. Nun ist das eine dem anderen aber nicht unbedingt hinderlich: den Nachweis haben die Damen der römischen Gesellschaft in die Weltliteratur eingebracht. Aus dem Nachlass von Dr. Jutta Börker-Klähn (1942-2019), Privatdozentin für Altorientalistik an den Universitäten von Berlin, Würzburg und Hamburg. - Ein tadelloses Exemplar. - Aus dem Text: Die Ausgrabungskampagnen von 1968 und 1969 in Bogazköy führten unter anderem zur Entdeckung und Freilegung einer Quellgrotte im südlichen Teil des sogenannten Südareals beim Grossen Tempel in der Unterstadt. 1968 wurde die zur Kammer hinabführende Treppe freigelegt und der Eingang des Kraggewölbes erreicht. Erst die Grabung von 1969 erbrachte aber den Beweis dafür, dass es sich um eine Quellgrotte oder Brunnenkammer handelte; denn bei der völligen Ausräumung des Gewölbes stiess man auf die hintere Abschlusswand mit der für den Wasserzulauf dienenden Öffnung, und das südliche Drittel der Kammer wurde von einem 1,75 zu 1,38 m messenden und 0,90 m tiefen Bassin eingenommen, das sich alsbald mit Wasser füllte. - Wikipedia: Hans Gustav Güterbock (geboren 27.
