Hubbed spines are heavily ornamented in gilt, each with five raised bands and a burgundy and black label stamped in gilt lettering. Inner boards are adorned with gilt lining around the edges. All three volumes of this sixth edition were published in 1803. Olive green endpapers. Volume I is 452 pages; Volume II is 427 pages; and Volume III is 372 pages with an index. On a shelf, this set spans 3.5 inches.PROVENANCE: Each volume bears a antiquarian bookplate bearing the name "William Philip Earl of Sefton, Croxteth Library", with associated family crest. This was either the 2nd or the 4th Earl of Sefton, (or both!), as both had the same name: William Philip Molyneux. The first lived from the period of 1772-1838; The second lived from 1835-1897, so per the time of publication, this set could have been owned by either or both of these Earls. The bookplate notes "Croxteth Library". Croxteth Hall was a country estate in the West Derby suburb of Liverpool, England, and ancestral home of the Molyneux family, the Earls of Sefton. After the death of the seventh and last Earl in 1972, the estate passed to Liverpool City Council, and is now open to the public.
