Ajouter au panierHardcover (Full Leather). Etat : Good. A lovely contemporary binding which is now somewhat worn and used but all the more charming for it. The decorative gilt border on both boards is worn and rubbed and the red leather cartouches in the centre of both boards is rather roughly cut into what is supposed to be an oval and the one on the rear was applied to the board upside down. Another nice feature of the book is that on the title page, a printed slip has been attached over 'The Church of England' which reads 'The United Church of England Ireland' suggesting that the book was in used at least until 1800 and the brief union between the two churches. The pages for the order of communion are soiled being both darkened and also splashed with, possibly communion wine (!) in a few places the name of the King has been crossed through and replaced with Victoria, a couple of pages have short tears. The lettering of the signatures doesn't entirely match up but overall the charm and appeal of this copy is originality of both the binding and the usage it has so obviously had as an altar copy. Woodfalls for the Company of Stationers, 1775. 4to (26 x 21 cm). [412]; [52] pp. Contemporary gold-tooled reverse calf, all edges gilt (faded). Some browning. Much of the gold tooling on the binding is gone, edges bumped and damaged. Expertly and inconspicuously rebacked. The front board with the gold-tooled red morocco library label of Moses Benson: Moses Benson 1786. An uncommon and attractive 4to edition of the Book of Common Prayer. From the library of Liverpool slave trader Moses Benson (1738-1806), with his red morocco library label on the front board. In the 1760s, Benson became a captain in the West Indies trade for Abraham Rawlinson, a Lancaster merchant. Benson served as Rawlinson's agent in Jamaica before forming his own trading company. In the West Indies, he acquired a considerable fortune before returning to Liverpool in 1775, where he entered the slave trade. The SlaveVoyages website lists over 80 slave voyages between 1775 and 1806 in which he was involved. It's no surprise, then, that slavery provided much of Liverpool's wealth. Although he continued to live on Kent Street in Liverpool, he invested part of his fortune in a Shropshire estate, Lutwyche Hall, in the 1780s. With Judith Powell, a "free mustee," he had six children, including Ralph Benson (1773-1845), a later member of parliament. Judging from the present book, Benson appears to have combined his slave trading business with Christian teachings. This copy of the Book of Common Prayer is bound with the famous New Version of the Psalms of David by poets Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady. First published in 1696, their metrical version of the Psalms was very influential; indeed, their version of Psalm 34 is still sung today. ¶ ESTC T81291; for Benson: Richardson, Liverpool and Transatlantic Slavery, passim, but particularly p. 125 ff.; SlaveVoyages website.…

Ajouter au panier12mo, (143x87mm), [96]p. somewhat soiled throughout, a small piece from the title-page with slight loss from the price, Previous owner's signature of Mary Isherwood on the title verso. Disbound. (ESTC 91926) ETSC locates only 6 copies (5 UK, 1 NA) of this Newbery titles that passed unnoticed in Roscoe's monumental bibliography. Two issues appeared in what is presumed to be the same year, this one has the full work 'University' in the second line of the imprint. The small piece missing from the title notes that the book was published at 3d but now lacks the continuation 'in sheets.' Judging by the evidence of use resulting in the soiling of the text, the early owner perhaps avoided the corruption of 'ungodly songs and ballads.' Please note that the advised postage is based on an average book, if possible the postage will be reduced to the correct amount and you will be notified by email.…

Ajouter au panierThirty-two mo, not paginated, sig., A-2C8. Crimson full morocco; spine on five raised bands, elaborate floral tooling to spine within compartments; 'A T' [i.e. Ann Truman] in gilt within border of floral rolls to boards; gilt rolls to turn-ins and to edges of boards; all edges gilt; marbled end-papers. Ownership inscription 'Mrs Banks formerly Miss Ann Truman See Remarks on Mortality at the other end of this Book' to front free end-paper; 'Ethel Louise Maggs from my Aunt Mrs Rehnworth[?] Nov 10th 104' to facing end-paper; printed extract on mortality pasted to end, accompanied by leaf of manuscript commentary recalling a conversation between a Sophie Banks and Mrs Banks in 1834, who discussed the extract 'in a very clear audible manner', and then pasted it into this book before 'expiring a few hours afterwards'. Loss to head of spine, corners bumped, small areas of rubbing to boards. Contents clean a bright. A very good copy. An almost miniature authorised Book of Common Prayer which records a remarkable encounter between two women. Pasted to one of the final end-papers is a short extract from a newspaper on mortality, taken from a sermon recorded in the Boston Gazette. On the next leaf is a short manuscript account from the nineteenth-century recalling a Mrs Banks (likely the Mrs Banks née Truman whose initials are tooled to the binding), on her deathbed, reading the passage aloud to a Miss Sophie Banks before declaring that she would paste it in her prayer book. The manuscript authors supposes that Mrs Banks must have 'lost no time' in doing so, as she died the morning after, on 11 February 1834. The last record of what may have been its owners dying act, which intimately shows a passage of sermonising being taken from print, to an oral discussion between two women, to its final resting place, pasted to the end of this volume.
