Following Marshall McLuhan's famous quote the medium is the message this article presents the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach/Main as a unique institution representing the genre o…f the artists book. The Klingspor Museum is more than simply a collection of book related arts because of its foundational idea of type- and bookmaking that put tremendous emphasis on merging these two domains. The leading personality of that history is Karl Klingspor. The practice of his type foundry revolutionised the ways that trade markets, literature, and culture in general traditionally separated until then came together in the foundry. From this beginning in the foundry, Klingspor developed a collecting ethos that brought together the arts of type, writing and the book, thereby promoting the process of creation itself. Because of this history, the museum inherits a specific responsibility to honor and promote the artists book. This profile is carried into the public and the city life of Offenbach, always communicating the different elements comprising the artists book. Especially in times of distance, the museum is looking for new ways to reach out to the citizens and potential visitors. In the words of Joseph Beuys: Everybody is an artist.

It is an arduous journey, both through time and through terrain. The poem also describes an interior journey into the dream world. I flooded myself with information because what poetry does not impart is information. Poetry is a door to the ineffable. My job, however, was to make a container to hold that ineffability." "Whenever asked to talk about The Mechanical Word, I begin by saying, 'The Mechanical Word is a series of books in which I constructed a mechanical language composed of cogs, cranks, levers and gears.' I have learned, however, that as soon as I say 'mechanical language', I am immediately bombarded with a thousand questions such as, 'What's a mechanical language? What does it look like? How does it work? What's it for anyway?' At the time that the project began, I had been looking at various properties of language. "The distinguishing characteristic of a book we call 'magical' is the presence of an aura that excites the imagination and imparts a sense of mystery. I am not referring here to a grimoire or books about magic, but rather to books that exhibit a palpable radiance emanating f…rom the work itself, books made of magic -- magical books." EMBODIED LANGUAGE: The Book as Craft and Concept is a collection of four essays that distill fifty+ years of thinking and practice in the arts of printing, poetry, and collage. The essays trace the history and formation of a unique field -- the auratic Gesamptkunstwerk or "total book" -- invoking ancient concepts of Craft that have evolved for thousands of years, transmitted through Neoplatonic thought, to become the book as metaphysical instrument (via Mallarmé) in the modern world. The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard has warned us in The Poetics of Reverie that "hands dream" and in extraordinary circumstances, the active principle of the artist and the poet is to employ the creative imagination in the struggle to constitute itself. These four pieces were written to "essay a thought" describing the emergence of a metaphysical paradigm, and illuminate the book as a work of art and magic. Inviting the Book as an artform into open discourse, Koch supplies a context for the work he most admires. Evoking the philosophical foundations of his mentors, William Everson, Adrian Wilson, Sandra Kirshenbaum, and Jack Stauffacher, Koch proceeds to describe the works of his contemporaries, Carolee Campbell, Clemens-Tobias Lange, Russell Maret, and Veronica Schaepers, that illustrate his thesis of the "Third Stream Book," a concept that borrows heavily from an essay by Kirshenbaum describing the "printer's book" as the form that offers the most authentic expression of the book as a total work of art. The final essay introduces a fresh thought experiment: The Poetry Musaeum -- as a locus for exploring the materiality of language.

The fine printer, often a commercial outfit, leaves… proportion, legibility, and craftsmanship as secondary principles, where as the private press printer is possessed with an irrepressible need to make books, containing characteristics of iconoclasm and reverence. Richly illustrated with color images, the book was designed by Russell Maret and printed in an edition of 500 copies at Peter Koch Printers. The cover was printed from antique wood and metal types in the Koch collection.
