Sex, Power, Control explores the underlying reasons for the mishandling of recent abuse cases.Using psychoanalytical and sociological insights, and including her own experiences as shown in the BBC documentary Exposed: The Church¿s Darkest Secret, Gardner asks why the Churches find themselves in such a crisis, and how issues of power and control have contributed to secrecy, deception and heartache.Drawing on survivor accounts and delving into the psychology of clergy abusers, she reveals a culture of avoidance and denial, while an examination of power dynamics highlights institutional narcissism and a hierarchical structure based on deference, with defensive assumptions linked to sex, gender and class.Sex, Power, Control is an invaluable resource for all those in the church or similar institutions, and for anyone concerned about child abuse.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 212 pp. Englisch.

There is therefore a 'kairos' moment here for the church to understand the importance of liminality through this unique book. Christianity and ¿The World¿ develops Martin¿s argument against simplistic secularization narratives with reference to the history of poetry, a topic with which few social theorists have been concerned. Martin shows the enduring but ever-changing centrality of Christian thought and practice, in its many different forms, to English poetry. Always mindful that the most important aspects of poetry¿s history can be captured only by attending to the minutest particulars of individual poems and poets, Martin¿s study sheds unexpected light on a wide range of English poets, from Spenser and Shakespeare to T.S. Eliot and Geoffrey Hill. The result is a study at once informed by an authoritative sociological perspective on secularization and richly coloured by the singular intensity of Martin¿s own reading life.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 228 pp. Englisch.

However, the role of one remarkable woman in securing this legacy has until now been obscured. Eliza Lowe and the Founding of Woodard Girls¿ Schools is her untold story.Drawing on scholarly articles, newspaper reports, letters from pupils, census records, and local and family archival material, Thompson describes life in Eliza Lowe¿s school, from swimming in the sea to politics at breakfast and competitions for an ¿amiability¿ prize. While discussions of Nathaniel Woodard and 19th-century girls¿ education provide context, Elizäs own letters reveal a woman of wit, curiosity and humanitarian feeling. Her achievements will inspire students of women¿s history and girls¿ education, and encourage those who believe that religion enhances education, while her lasting legacy will interest both former pupils and those who continue in the Woodard tradition today.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 208 pp. Englisch.

In this refreshing account of Ransome¿s work, Alan Kennedy sets out to explain his enduring appeal, combining literary criticism with psychological expertise. Not only did Ransome apply a careful narrative theory to his works, his use of symbolism aligning them more with the modernist tradition than with the event-driven children¿s literature of contemporaries such as Richmal Crompton and Enid Blyton, but his novels are also more than usually autobiographical. This Kennedy ably demonstrates with reference to three particular challenges Ransome faced in a seriously conflicted life: his father¿s untimely death, his abandonment of his infant daughter in order to escape his catastrophic first marriage, and the innumerable compromises that kept him alive during his Russian exile. A Thoroughly Mischievous Person is the first study to tackle this matter systematically, giving casual and scholarly readers alike new insights into the ¿other¿ Arthur Ransome.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 156 pp. Englisch.

He offers guidance both for the student of English, uncertain about Traherne¿s theological ideas, and the student of theology, put off by seventeenth-century poetic conventions and diction. Using a wealth of quotation, he examines Traherne¿s verse alongside that of a variety of his contemporaries, including Andrew Marvell, Lucy Hutchinson, Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. Central to Traherne¿s poetry and generous theology is his delight in the capacity of his soul to approach God through an appreciation of His infinite creation. This soul is ¿voluble¿, not only because it can express its thoughts with fluency, but also because it can enfold within itself the infinity of God¿s creation, taking in everything that it perceives, considering the latest scientific speculations about the atom and astronomy, but also looking clear-sightedly at Restoration society¿s materialism and ¿ in one startlingly savage satire ¿ the corruption of the royal court.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 284 pp. Englisch.

This controversial project critically traces the origins of the colleges, their development and reasons for their abrupt closure. Current debates are addressed such as school versus college training and the balance between academic and professional training and the balance between academic and professional training (where the academic training should take place). Social issues are analysed such as the role of women in colleges (links to the suffrage movement), social mobility (working class teacher), control and rebellion (how far were the colleges total institutions), student life (sport and transnationalism.) Oral history is used. As well as drawing on my personal experience, thirty former colleges of educations students were interviewed, the oldest being 101years and including Estelle Morris, former Labour Party Education Secretary. Shortly before he died Professor Asa Briggs lamented to me that there was no public debate about the closures of colleges of education and the restructuring of higher education. Now secret meetings and documents are exposed. The role of government is researched. Archival material from individual colleges, local and national government is traced ad former civil servants interviewed. Margaret Thatchers' role in the closures is re-assessed. This new evidence contradicts the Official version of events which was the closures were on educational rather than administrative grounds.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 176 pp. Englisch.

Their history since then ranges from pilgrim hostels built by monasteries to coaching inns and palatial railway hotels. Throughout this book runs a rich vein of social history detailing the food, drink, furnishings and costs of British hotels. Travellers¿ tales, both British and foreign, from the sixteenth century onwards, are quoted at length, so that the book comes alive with first-hand impressions. We learn how some of the Regency Hotels of London came into being, such as Grillion¿s, where Louis XVIII stayed in 1814, and there are accounts of the early railway hotels, and the great provincial hotels of Britain¿s coast and countryside.Mary Cathcart Borer¿s study still provides a detailed historical perspective of her subject almost fifty years on from its first publication, while at the same time offering a glimpse of contemporary attitudes to the rapidly expanding British hotel trade in the 1970s.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 284 pp. Englisch.

In the past, biographers of Lord Liverpool have not sufficiently acknowledged the importance of his foremost skill: economic policy (including fiscal, monetary and banking system questions). Here, Hutchinson¿s decades of experience in the finance sector provide a more specialised perspective on Liverpool¿s economic legacy than most historians are able to offer. From his adept handling of unparalleled economic and social difficulties, to his strategic defeat of Napoleon and unprecedented approach to the subsequent peace process, Liverpool is shown to have set Britain¿s course for prosperity and effective government for the following century. In addition to granting him his rightful place among British Prime Ministers on both domestic and foreign policy grounds, Hutchinson advances how a proper regard for Liverpool¿s career might have changed the structure and policies of today¿s government for the better.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 452 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This is the first biography of a mathematical genius and his literary wife, their wide circle of well-known intellectual and artistic friends, and through them of the age in which they lived. William Clifford died in 1879 at the age of 33. During his short life he became renowned not only for his innovative and lasting mathematics, but also for his philosophy, which embraced the fundamentals of scientific thought, the nature of the physical universe, Darwinian evolutionary theory, the nature of consciousness, personal morality and law, and the whole mystery of being. It is now recognised among mathematicians and physicists that Dirac's theory of the electron, fundamental to modern physics, is based on Clifford algebra. He also anticipated Einstein's idea that space is curved. The year after his election to the Royal Society, Clifford married Lucy Lane, the journalist and novelist. During their four years of marriage they held Sunday salons which were attended by many well-known scientific, literary and artistic personalities. After William's death, Lucy became a close friend and confidante of Henry James. Her wide circle of friends included Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, George Eliot, Leslie Stephen, Thomas Huxley, Sir Frederick Macmillan, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Monty Chisholm has researched the lives of these two influential people from archive material, biographies of those who knew them, and hitherto unpublished collections of letters. Her insight, not only into the lives of the Cliffords, but also into the period in which they lived, makes for fascinating and lively reading. The book is further enhanced by a personal reflection on William Clifford's mathematics in the Afterword by the celebrated mathematician Sir Roger Penrose O.M.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 208 pp. Englisch.

In their different traditions, theologians, environmental educators and psychologists all affirm that knowing their place in the natural environment helps a child develop an intersubjective ¿ecological¿ identity that nurtures virtues of mutuality and care. During the Scientific Revolution this ethical harmony was threatened as science and moral theology began to adopt different epistemological methods, something the Anglican priest and poet Thomas Traherne was all too aware of. Traherne insisted that education should promote a child¿s attention to the moral dimensions woven into ¿the tapestry of creation¿, and professed that play, wonder, and a sensory relationship to diverse creatures play a pedagogical role in a child¿s moral formation. Greening the Children of God establishes the contemporary significance of Traherne¿s moral theory in conversation with child psychologists, educators, philosophers, and theologians who know that cultivating a place-based relationship to the local ecology helps children perceive creation¿s deep mutuality and develop a moral identity in the image of a caring Creator.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 276 pp. Englisch.

In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the ¿gospel¿ proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire, sucking the blood of her children instead of offering them Eucharistic life. In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald offers us a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald¿s theology ¿the child¿ becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire¿s kingdom and confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. John R. de Jong¿s meticulously researched study of MacDonald¿s work ¿ especially his ¿realist¿ and fantasy novels ¿ in its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. In light of the growth of fundamentalist expressions of Christianity, we are encouraged to consider embracing MacDonald¿s radical solution to religious vampirism: becoming children.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 292 pp. Englisch.

Privileged to live in radically different cultural contexts over the course of his life, Neill excelled by turns as a missionary and bishop in India, an ecumenist in Geneva, a professor in Hamburg and Nairobi, and a prolific author of some seventy books and hundreds of articles upon his retirement to the UK. Throughout this varied career, he shared his tremendous knowledge of the world Christian movement with scholars, clergy and laypersons alike. In doing so, she interrogates what lies behind some of Zenon Vantini¿s very real achievements, legacies and disasters. She asks how far he was driven by his familial background in Elba and his involvement in the political turmoil of early-nineteenth-century France, and to what extent his whole life was known to those around him.Vantini¿s extraordinary life encapsulates the change between two very different worlds ¿ the old imperial past and the new age of entrepreneurial risk-taking. Never shaking off his old political loyalties, he believed resolutely that the mobility afforded by railway travel would change Europe fundamentally. In the long view he was a component part in the very early years of an industry which arguably changed England and Europe more than did even his hero, Napoleon. Scholars and casual readers of British and European social history will be fascinated by his story. 192 pp.

This new evidence contradicts the Official version of events which was the closures were on educational rather than administrative grounds. 176 pp.

We learn how some of the Regency Hotels of London came into being, such as Grillion¿s, where Louis XVIII stayed in 1814, and there are accounts of the early railway hotels, and the great provincial hotels of Britain¿s coast and countryside.Mary Cathcart Borer¿s study still provides a detailed historical perspective of her subject almost fifty years on from its first publication, while at the same time offering a glimpse of contemporary attitudes to the rapidly expanding British hotel trade in the 1970s. 284 pp.

In addition to granting him his rightful place among British Prime Ministers on both domestic and foreign policy grounds, Hutchinson advances how a proper regard for Liverpool¿s career might have changed the structure and policies of today¿s government for the better. 452 pp. Englisch.

He was also a committed and lifelong reader of English poetry. The result is a study at once informed by an authoritative sociological perspective on secularization and richly coloured by the singular intensity of Martin¿s own reading life. 228 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is the first biography of a mathematical genius and his literary wife, their wide circle of well-known intellectual and artistic friends, and through them of the age in which they lived. The book is further enhanced by a personal reflection on William Clifford's mathematics in the Afterword by the celebrated mathematician Sir Roger Penrose O.M. 208 pp. Englisch.

In this useful contribution to the performing arts curriculum, Maskwork takes a new look at the creative and timeless art of masks and mask-making, while also exploring their cultural anthropology from prehistory to the present day. Drawing on her extensive experience in professional theatre and running workshops, Foreman promotes the life-affirming qualities of masks, providing us with an invaluable resource for artists and teachers, as well as parents seeking activities for children at home. Eight themed projects use photographs to document masks and mask-making techniques, with each one offering practical advice and design ideas; materials are inexpensive and easy to acquire. 156 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Greening the Children of God uncovers the theological roots of the growing ethical imperative to reconnect children to their natural environment. Greening the Children of God establishes the contemporary significance of Traherne¿s moral theory in conversation with child psychologists, educators, philosophers, and theologians who know that cultivating a place-based relationship to the local ecology helps children perceive creation¿s deep mutuality and develop a moral identity in the image of a caring Creator. 276 pp.

In light of the growth of fundamentalist expressions of Christianity, we are encouraged to consider embracing MacDonald¿s radical solution to religious vampirism: becoming children. 292 pp. Englisch.
