From an on-line posting: "Historically, defense strategy demonstrates three flaws: (1) it is generally reactive, (2) it lacks sufficient strategic imagination, and (3) as a result, it is vulnerable to surprise. The current administration confronted a game-changing strategic shock in its first 8 months in office. The next team would be well-advised to expect the same kind of unconventional and nonmilitary shock to DoD convention early in its first term. Mr. Nathan P. Freier is an Associate Professor of National Security Studies with the Strategic Studies Institute. Mr. Freier is a veteran of numerous strategy development and strategic planning efforts at Headquarters, Department of the Army and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Freier has published on national security and defense issues. His areas of expertise are defense, military strategy and policy development and strategic net and risk assessment. The information was current when the work was published by SSI." Fair. No dust jacket. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Misprinted with pages out of order but appears complete.

From an on-line posting: "The U.S. effort to reconstitute Afghanistan as a fully sovereign and functioning state is endangered by endemic warlordism more so than the low-level Taliban/al Qaeda insurgency. LTC Millen offers a shift in strategy that addresses the war of ideas, the counter narcotics initiative, and the incorporation of the Afghan National Army into the provincial reconstruction teams. As LTC Millen observes, all the resources are in place, they simply need a shift in focus. Lieutenant Colonel Raymond A. Millen graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1982, and has held a variety of command and staff assignments. He served in Kabul from July through November 2003 on the staff of the Office of Military Cooperation-Afghanistan, focusing on the Afghan National Army and the General staff. He served with Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. Lieutenant Colonel Millen has published articles in a number of scholarly and professional journals. From Wikipedia: "Irregular warfare is warfare in which one or more combatants are irregular military rather than regular forces. Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare, and so is asymmetric warfare. Irregular warfare favors indirect and asymmetric warfare approaches, though it may employ the full range of military and other capabilities, in order to erode the adversary s power, influence, and will. It is inherently a protracted struggle that will test the resolve of a state and its strategic partners. Concepts associated with irregular warfare are older than the term itself. "Irregular forces" is a term in international humanitarian law referring to a category of combatants consisting of individuals forming part of the armed forces of a party to an armed conflict, international or non-international, but not belonging to that party's regular forces and operating in or outside of their own territory even if the territory is under occupation." From Wikipedia: "The People's Liberation Army is the official term for the Armed forces of the People's Republic of China (PRC). The PLA consists of four professional service branches: the People's Liberation Army Ground Force, the People's Liberation Army Navy, the People's Liberation Army Air Force and the Second Artillery Corps. The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2, 285, 000 personnel. The PLA is under the command of the Central Military Commission of the CPC. A system of political officers embedded within the military assures party authority over the armed forces. The political and military leadership have made a concerted effort to create a professional military force. This conception of the role of the PLA requires the promotion of specialized officers who can understand modern weaponry and handle combined arms operations. Military service is compulsory by law." They argue that the most serious problems facing Iraq and its American occupiers criminal anarchy and lawlessness, a raging insurgency and a society divided into rival and antagonistic groups were virtually inevitable consequences that flowed from the act of war itself. From an on-line posting: "Many insurgents groups benefit from sanctuaries in neighboring countries where they are relatively safe from state security forces. These transnational insurgencies complicate traditional counterinsurgency operations in significant ways. Most importantly, transnational insurgencies have the potential to spark conflicts between neighboring countries. This monograph examines several transnational insurgencies that have been active since the end of the Cold War. While many neighboring countries have experienced the escalation of conflict between them as the result of cross-border violence, other states have successfully cooperated in providing border security. In depth case studies of relations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as India and its eastern neighbors are explored. The lessons learned from this research are applied to contemporary issues facing Iraq and Afghanistan. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling.
