From lower cover: The crack of the old-time cow hunter's whip gave the native Floridian a nickname, but Al Burt's Tropic of Cracker is is a state of mind shared by those who love "what remains of the Florida that needed no blueprint or balance sheet for its creation, that was here before there was a can opener or a commercial or a real-estate agent." In his years of roving the state as a Miami Herald columnist, Al Burt mapped Florida's Tropic of Cracker, not with lines of latitude and longitude but with stories. The Cracker Burt tells of are men and women from Apalachicola to the Everglades, from Tallahassee to the Keys. They lived in the late 1800s, and they live today -- along the Ocklawaha and in the floodplains of Lake Okeechobee. They were cow hunters, Conchs and alligator men. They grew oranges, sugarcane, and muscadine grapes. They made moonshine. They drove mules, ate fried mullet, and told yarns in a Cracker creole about Florida's panthers, snakes, alligators, and hurricanes. There are luminaries among them -- Zora Neale Hurston, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Virgil Hawkins, John DeGrove, Harry Crews -- but mostly they are just regular folk who makr the borders of the elusive and magical Tropic of Cracker. Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. First edition. With a signed note from the author affixed to the front pastedown, reading in full: "Norma: I have learned that my small book on the founding of the Audubon movement is still in print but---the price has been raised to $49.95. Absurd! Herein enclosed for your library is a slightly used copy. You many now and then find it useful a reference. Oliver Orr." One of the author's own copies then, passed along. Orr was a specialist in American History at the Library of Congress. With a bookplate reading "From the Library of Bill & Norma Siebenheller" at the opposite corner of the pastedown. The Siebenheller's were bird enthusiasts who wrote a longtime column called "Footnotes on Nature" first for the State Island Advance then the Translyvania Times. Norma Siebenheller also wrote articles for Birders Digest. A biography of T. Gilbert Pearson, an important figure in early bird conservation. He was the first president of the North Carolina Audubon Society and a founding member (the original secretary) of the National Audubon Society. He was also an all-around interesting story, described for instance as "the member of the Boone and Crockett Club with the smallest bank account." He grew up in a cabin in the woods of Florida where he began to hunt and collect birds; he traded his collection of birds for college tuition and afterward devoted himself to conservation, becoming the first chair of biology and geology at what's now UNC-Greensboro. After William Dutcher died, Pearson followed as the second president of the National Audubon Society, a post he held for fourteen years. A very good copy on account of foxing to text block edges, otherwise very clean. In a very good jacket with a few short tears and nicks and light toning to spine. Uncommon signed in any form.…
