Ajouter au panier37 volumes. A monumental Dutch natural history, compiled by the physician and naturalist Martinus Houttuyn (17201798). Houttuyn based this encyclopaedic work mainly on Carl Linnaeus' Systema Naturae. The work comprises three extensive sections, devoted respectively to zoology (18 volumes), botany (14 volumes), and mineralogy (5 volumes), together constituting one of the most ambitious natural history publications produced in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. The text is accompanied by nearly 300 finely engraved illustrations, all coloured by a contemporary hand.Houttuyn's Natuurlyke historie represents an important Dutch elaboration of the Linnaean system of classification. Rather than merely translating Linnaeus's work, Houttuyn expanded upon it with extensive descriptions, observations, and references to contemporary natural history literature, bringing together an exceptionally broad account of the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms as understood in the eighteenth century. The botanical section is particularly noteworthy for its wealth of plant descriptions, while the zoological and mineralogical sections document the extraordinary range of subjects encompassed by contemporary natural inquiry. The publication's scale and prolonged appearance, extending over nearly a quarter of a century, reflect both the ambition of the undertaking and the growing importance of systematic natural history in the Dutch Republic. Its combination of detailed scientific description and engraved illustration makes it an important source for the history of eighteenth-century zoology, botany, mineralogy, and the reception of Linnaean taxonomy in the Netherlands.A bookseller's ticket has been removed from all front pastedowns (" Damrak [Amsterdam]"). The bindings show signs of wear: the leather is dry and slightly stained, the leather at the heads of the spines is somewhat damaged (mainly volumes 7, 13, 16, 23, 30, 31, and 34), slight foxing throughout all volumes, occasional browning. In volume 2 plate XIV and leaves M4-5 (the 3 leaves together) are loose but still present, volume 5 lacks quire 2S, volume 6 lacks leaf 2N2, volume 7 lacks leaf 2F4 (publisher's advertisement) and the catchword on the previous (here last) page has been erased, volumes 22, 36 and 37 lack the half title, otherwise complete with all hand-coloured plates. Good set of a great 18th-century encyclopaedic work on natural history.l Ekama, Cat. Fond. Teyler I, 36; Hulth, 8; Landwehr, 82 (Houttuyn); Soulsby, 73; Stafleu, Linnaeus, pp. 174-176; STCN 258333901 etc. (individual records for each volume); cf. Nissen, BBI, 940; Nissen, ZBI, 2011; Stafleu & Cowan, 3080. Contemporary uniform gold-tooled half calf, sprinkled paper sides, with 2 red morocco labels lettered in gold on the spines (upper label giving author and volume number, lower label giving subject). Further with a woodcut vignette on each title page, woodcut decorated initials, and head- and tailpieces built up from typographic ornaments.…
