Tight, clean copy. *** "Recollections of more than one hundred of O'Keeffe's friends, relatives, colleagues, and neighbors as well as published and previously unpublished historical records and letters are used to provide the first full-length biography and in-depth study of the celebrated painter's life. Georgia O'Keeffe's personal mystique is as intriguing and enduring as her bold, brilliant canvases. Portrait of an Artist is the first full account of her exceptional life--from her girlhood and early days as a controversial art teacher, to her discovery by the pioneering photographer of the New York avant-garde, Alfred Stieglitz, to her seclusion in the New Mexico desert where she lived until her death at ninety-eight. Equipped with passion, steadfastness, and three years poring over research, former Newsweek reporter Laurie Lisle finally shines a light on one of the most significant and innovative twentieth century artists." - Publisher. This is the legendary Book of Visions of an American Indian. Color portrait of Black Elk on the cover. Black Elk offers an eloquent and profound vision of the unity of all creation, as told to Flaming Rainbow. Illustrated by 16 full-color and black and white paintings beginning on page 111 drawn by Standing Bear, the artist of the Oglala Sioux. Dedication is to What is goood in this book is given back to the six grandfathers and to the great men of my people. ---Black Elk. In 1931 an old man standing on Harney Mountain raised his arms and cried out these words O Make My People Live. His name was Black Elk, warrior and medicine man of the Oglala Sioux. From the Battle of the Little Big Horn, which he witnessed as a boy of 13 , to the last terrible massacre of the Indians at Wounded Knee. Black Elk lived the life of the Plains Indian and saw the death of his people. Ajouter au panierPaperback. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. 253pp. Mass Market Paperback. For Burgess, one of late 20th century's certifiable master fiction writers, a piece like The Pianoplayers is a bit of a diversion. It is light, it is funny, it comes with the most basic kind of message (people need love, sex, and affection if they are to remain happy and sane). A lesser writer would be thrilled to have produced this charming comic work, a summation of Burgess's life, times, and preoccupations. Ellen Henshaw is the daughter of a pianoplayer (not a "pianist," she would insist, which is something entirely different), an accompaniest to movies in the old days of the silent screen. The first portion of the book details her father's attempts to stay financially afloat through various plots and schemes, leading to his demise at the keyboard. The second half shows Ellen blooming into a world famous expert on the power of love (prostitute is too prosaic a term for what she is). Burgess relates the story in female first person, and the voice is pretty much free of any obvious false notes. Much has been made of Burgess's comparisions to Joyce, and here he does employ a slight variation of the stream of consciousness technique, but it never impedes the flow of the story. This is a dandy concoction. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated.
