Josabeth Sjöberg växte upp i en välbärgad familj i Stockholm. Utan annan utbildning än lite piano- och gitarrspel försörjde hon sig efter föräldrarnas död (modern 1831, fadern 1833) som musiklärare i privathem i Stockholm under hela sitt liv. Josabeth Sjöberg var en konstnärlig naturbegåvning som tecknade och målade akvareller på sin fritid. Hennes stora arv till eftervärlden är ett stort antal akvareller som skildar den tidens vardagsliv i borgarklassens kök och vardagsrum och livet på artonhundratalets Södermalm. Drygt hälften av akvarellerna är från hennes små frökenhem. Bilderna är amatörmässiga men visar stor målar- och berättarglädje. Stockholms stadsmuseum förvärvade 1936 praktiskt taget hela hennes konstnärliga kvarlåtenskapskap, 57 av 59 akvarellerade blad. - - - A little book devoted to Josabeth Sjöberg (1812-1882), a Swedish (amateur) painter and music teacher. After her death, her paintings passed to the family of a friend, apparently per her will. By the 1930s they had become dispersed, but in 1936 the Stockholm City Museum acquired 57 of the 59 known watercolours, which have since been displayed several times in art exhibitions, including the 700-year jubilee of the city of Stockholm. Despite the technical naivete of her works, they have been widely used to illustrate books and articles on the culture of 19th century Stockholm.

Medan tvisten om författarens samhällskritiska pamflett "Den Röda Boken" ännu pågick utgav Napoleon Berger ytterligare en skrift, denna gång under pseudonymen Krigsholm, som anspelar på åklagarens namn - Fredholm. Även "Den marmorerade boken" åtalades, men Berger undgick genom att fly utomlands. Han slog sig ned i Schweiz, förespråkade marxistisk socialism och samarbetade med Engels. Då tvingades han i exil ännu en gång och flydde till USA, där han startade ett litet tryckeri i New York och bl. a. tryckte Amerikas första tidning på svenska, "Skandinavien".

Spine has 5 slightly raised bands with gilt decoration to them and gilt lettering on a red leather patch to compartment two. Inner dentells gilt. New endpapers.The book is in two volumes but bound as one with the pagination being sequential. 13.25ins x 10.25ins, [vii], (i), vi, 2pp contents, 20pp memoir, 292pp, 70pp appendix, 28pp addenda (covering 1771 to 1812) plus frontis portrait, 50 plates, a folding pedigree and an additional folding plate showing "elevation of the choir", which is dated 1811. All plates are present, but some are placed out of order. Two illustrations listed as plates are more correctly called headpieces. Three of the listed plates are contained on one folding leaf. Most plates have age toning and there are some minor splits to some of the folding plates. Corners rubbed and worn. G to G+ example of a fairly scarce work. Tryckt i 770 ex varav detta är nr S191, tryckt för författaren, konstnären och tecknaren Gunnar Brusewitz (1924-2004), enligt densammes namnteckning i kolofonen (som väl i själva verket skrivit sitt namn senare). Brusewitz utförde bl. a. diplomen för Nobelpriset i litteratur 1963-1988 och flera frimärken, men var även en framstående och mycket uppskattad bokkonstnär. Han illustrerade dels sina många egna böcker, ofta på temat djur och natur, dels verk av bl. a. Carl von Linné och Frans G. Bengtsson. De fyra ingående skrifterna är "Tal om märkvärdigheter uti insecterna", "Naturaliesamlingars ändamål och nytta", "Tal vid der Kongl. Majesteters höga närvaro" och "Deliciae naturae".

Contemporary brown calf, ruled in blind, gilt lettered black leather label, and marbled paper boards, all edges and endpapers marbled, 194 pp.; (a)2, B-N8, O2; C-1 is integral - in some copies C-1 is a cancel. The C-1 text in this copy is identical to the text of the cancel. Leaves (a)1 and O2 are blank, some copies have a leaf of ads in the front and the back. This was a popular mystery/fantasy/romance which had sold 352,000 copies by 1887, and was immediately translated into six European languages (Charles Kent in DNB). This book is interesting today to literary historians studying Emily Dickinson. Miss Dickinson wrote to her cousins, Louise and Fanny Norcross, in a January, 1885 letter: "A friend sent me 'Called Back'. It is a haunting story, and.greatly impressive to me." (Letters, 1894, v.2, p.299). The last letter she is believed to have written, to the same cousins, contained just four words: "Little Cousins, - Called back" (undated, just before the 15th May, 1886, which was the day she died). Dickinson titled few of her poems; when Mabel Loomis Todd published Poems in 1891 she gave the title "Called Back" to the early poem beginning "Just lost, when I was saved.". Dickinson's niece, Martha Dickinson Bianchi, replaced the original tombstone, which simply said "E.D.D.", with another that ".included Dickinson's birth and death dates as well as the phrase 'Called Back'" (Dickinson Museum website, Amherst). Filled with beautiful illustrations in both black and white and full color. 94 pages with only a few left blank. Varying levels of foxing and browning to illustrations, though most remain quite clean. Paper is somewhat brittle with edge wear to several pages throughout which does not affect the illustrations. Med en fascinerande och lågande feministisk inledning mot Almqvist, som föranleder utgivaren att på ett extra blad ge en ursäktande förklaring: "I anseende till den polemiska riktningen af förestående inledning, och då sådant är något hittills ovanligt i Läsebibliotheket, anser utgifvaren sig förpligtad att dervid göra ett tillägg". Några rader ur författarinnans förord: "Och författ. beklagar, att hennes uttryck endast kan blifva en gnista af den förtrytsamhet, hon och hela hennes kön känner, då hon ser qvinnan framställd icke som menniska, utan som en mäklarevara. [- - -] Må mannen, må författaren endast betänka detta; och han skall finna, att qvinnan eger en högre plats, en ädlare bestämmelse, än att inöfvas till en ambulatorisk marionette för hans nycker och nöjen." - - - Henrica Carolina von Platen, född Brandkula (1816-1871) var författare och feminist som nådde ryktbarhet med denna sin debutroman, "en framtidsskildring i vilken huvudpersonen, med ödesdigra följder, ger sig hän i det 'fria äktenskapet'" (Lotta Lotass). - - - Carl Jonas Love Almqvists "Det går an" (1839), där glasmästardottern Sara Videbeck och sergeanten Albert tänker sig ett jämlikt äktenskap utan formell vigsel, ledde till en mängd följdskrifter. Utgivningen bidrog till att Almqvist fick lämna sin tjänst som rektor för Nya Elementarskolan i Stockholm och låg honom till last också i hans tilltänkta karriär som präst. Han brännmärktes i den allmänna opinionen som osedlighetsförfattare. En hel ny litteraturgenre, "det-går-an-litteratur", uppstod, nästan uteslutande mot Almqvist. - - - "Carolina von Platens Evelina Reder [.] rör sig helt utanför Almqvists historia och karaktärer, men kan ändå tveklöst räknas som ett av inläggen i debatten, med tanke på titeln och förordet där författarinnan går till hårt angrepp mot Almqvist och hans idéer. Von Platen använder sig av konsekvenstopiken, och skapar med sin berättelse ett slags experimentsituation, där experimentet består i att se vad för konsekvenser den fria kärleken får för de älskande. Dessa konsekvenser får sedan agera motargument mot Almqvists idéer. Von Platen understryker det komplementära förhållandet mellan könen, det vill säga att man och kvinna har olika uppgifter i samhällsordningen, men lika värde. Hennes huvudargument är att mannen inte förlorar någonting på att inleda ett förhållande med en kvinna utan att gifta sig, medan kvinnan förlorar allt - släkt, vänner, anseende, ekonomisk trygghet för sig och sina barn, och i slutändan till och med den älskades respekt. Enligt von Platen har kvinnan endast två alternativ: antingen kan hon välja det fria äktenskapet, där hon förlorar sitt anseende och sin ekonomiska trygghet och där mannen ges möjlighet att smita undan sina förpliktelser, eller så kan hon välja den äktenskapliga institutionen, som bygger på en strikt arbetsfördelning mellan könen och där rådande lagar och normsystem tvingar makarna att uppfylla sina plikter mot varandra om kärleken skulle tryta. Med andra ord är hon inne på samma linje som Stålberg - att idéerna i Det går an är alldeles för utopiska för att fungera i verkligheten.
