Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. PMIn architecture, looking back is a rerequisite to looking forward. Inspired and competent design has to be informed by a knowledge and understanding of earlier design and technology. For no one is this truism more applicable than Jan Kaplicky of Future Systems. Future Systems is well known for its futuristic work, including the highly acclaimed Media Centre at Lord's, as well as the soon-to-be-built Selfridges department store in Birmingham. It is Kaplicky's delight and enthusiasm for 20th-century design and architecture, which have helped feed his appetite for innovative design solutions and exploring new technologies. In Looking Back in Envy, Kaplicky invites ten key architects, artists, designers and engineers of our time to choose their favourite work of the previous century. Contributors include Ron Arad, Peter Cook,Tony Hunt,Zaha Hadid and Anish Kapoo BEAUTIFUL COPY!!.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Acceptable. Support Small Business by buying this book! Family-owned bookshop in Steubenville, Ohio: BookMarx Bookstore. Books shipped within 24-48 hours. No marks in text but many pages have wrinkling. There is considerable wear from use. Cover is a bit worn. The book appears to have been printed with the bottom having been cut slanted - about half in inch or so is missing from the top of the slant to the opposite corner. However, the text is completely fine. No words are cut off, just blank margins. Used university stickers on book, and there are two stamped 'USED' marks on bottom outside edges of pages.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Good. The book deals with the characteristics of large housing schemes as well as turn-of-the-century houses - in fact a complete range of average housing stock - and examines the alterations people make to reflect their identity. Willats examines people's responses to the architect's design of their homes and the way they alter them to make them their own, he considers how people personalise housing which is often exactly the same as the space next door and therefore in need of individualisation.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Good. This book applauds the union of architecture and engineering both today and throughout the history of building and construction. The relationship between the two fields is multifaceted. Some architects may have had an engineering background, and some engineers have experience of architecture. Some unacknowledged engineers have stood modestly behind great architects, and a number of architects have been encouraged and supported by their engineer-collaborators in designing structures that appear to defy gravity.Architects + Engineers = Structures focuses on the ideal: on a cohesive building design team where the members contribute equally, resulting in unique and exceptional designs. These are architects and engineers who entice beauty into buildings not just with lines on paper and calculations but with intuition, innovation and feeling for the needs of people, materials, strength, proportion, lightness and elegance.Structures featured include: * dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence* Church of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona* Eiffel Tower, Paris* Sydney Opera House, Sydney* Marina City, Chicago* Olympic Swimming Pool Arena, Tokyo* London Eye, London* many other international examples, both celebrated and less well-known'This subject is very important, and I hope the book will attract the attention of many architects and engineers.' Professor Mamoru KawaguchiAlso by Ivan Margolius: Automobiles by Architects, Wiley-Academy, ISBN 047160786X'How rare it is to put down a book with the sense of pleasure satisfied, the mind excited by ideas and information, nostalgia stimulated, the eye amused by illustrations.' Brian Sewell, The Spectator'Superbly entertaining book.' Edwin Heathcote, The Architects' Journal'This is an enjoyable read.' Building Design'Excellent book.' FX Magazine'Purchasers are likely to have something unique on their bookshelves.' The Automobile'A pleasant surprise is the density and clarity of the text, usefully accompanied by a wealth and diversity of iconography.' L'Architecture d'aujourd'hui Book has minor shelf wear.
